550mhz CPU and only 250mb RAM are my gripes, but it's all about how it handles in practice with these things. It is sexy; which was my largest gripe with previous android hardware.

Okay, the one spec I can't seem to find anywhere at all is PRICE. :lol help me out gaf

256mb RAM

price = $199 after $100 mail in rebate. $599 if you buy it without plan

Well yeah of course. Obviously a typo. No binary-operating device would know what to do with 250mb :P

Thanks for the price. Wonder if I can get the new plan price if I extend my contract...

I know it was a typo, just figured I'd still mention it. wasn't trying to be a dick

supposedly you can if you have a plan over x dollars amount and have had it for a year, i forget where i saw it. I want to say over 39 dollars?

Not trying to start a fanboy war but im wondering if the droid is faster than the 3gs? the only comparison ive seen is browser speed and the 3gs won, but im wondering if general performance is faster.

I don't know about specific speed tests and such, but I'm willing to bet the iPhone will always come out ahead. There's an advantage in building software and hardware together -- you get the most out of it. That, plus the lack of multitasking will keep the iPhone running more quickly in the long run. This is coming from a big Android fan, by the way.

Cool thanks. I went from a 2g to a 3gs and the speed increase was ridiculous. I've been thinking of getting an android phone, but I don't want something as slow as the OG iphone. Whatever happened to the snap dragon phone?

The mythical Rachael is a Snapdragon Android phone. It may or may not come in this dimension.

No offense to you and the other people, but you should read the threads more.

What the fuck. Are you familiar with the phrase "tongue-in-cheek?"

:lol

Christ. November 3rd is almost certainly an announce and not a release date, right?

I think so. I don't expect to see the Rachael till 2010/

Says the person who kept asking for the phone price when it was so obvious in the Droid thread. Was that tounge in cheek as well?

I don't know what a tounge is, but the "Pricing and Availability" line in the Droid thread specifies the price after rebate for a new customer contract agreement, and the price without contract is not mentioned once in the OP or even on the first page of that thread. Thank you, Sableholic and others for your patience and helping me out with that. I still don't have all of the information I was looking for however, because I'm an existing customer wanting to upgrade. But anyway, feel free to just keep making me out to be a jackass.

Same here, that is the complete and utter totality of what I meant by my "may or may not come in this dimension" comment. I know it's real. I have no idea when it will come out, but my money's on "not this year."

EDIT: I mean fucking come on. Sony's own promotional material references "the line between the extraordinary and the magical." Did you really not get what I was going for? :lol

Yeah, keep going.

I am working on an android article on my blog. Should put it up sometime this week. Just basically how and why i think android going to change the face of phones and is really blurring the lines between traditional phones and smartphones.

For instance i think the really big thing to come out of this is the introduction of low cost smartphone devices across the whole industry. Why offer dumphones any more when we can offer smart phones for 100,179,200 a pop.

I think you definitely have a point. While many users who are getting a new cell phone service are simply happy to get the free phone they can receive with their contract, plenty of people who spring for the full-featured $80 dumbphone might be inclined to bite for a $100 smartphone when they see how much they can do.

The issue is the high cost of data plans.

$30 a month is about what you would pay for home internet access. This is that plus internet on the go. I think it's pretty reasonable actually.

About the cost of data plans: Very true. This is what kept me from the Samsung Omnia which I was in-store and ready to plunk down the cash for even though it wasn't my ideal device.. then I learned a data plan was mandatory. Got myself an Alias and went on my way.

But to that end, it might be in the financial interest of a carrier to introduce a "basic smartphone data" plan, say $15 a month instead of $30, with a data cap and so forth, alongside a $100 handset. It's something I could see happening as smartphones start to occupy a greater portion of the total cell market, but we're talking decades off, I would think.

@above, but most users won't be choosing one or the other. It's not that it's not a decent deal, and now (I have a steady job, whereas I was a starving college student when I got my Alias) I'd be more than willing to pay for it. But plenty of people who are currently using dumbphones won't be able to justify an extra $30 a month, $360 a year just to get a new phone.

Most people keep their home internet access, so there's a sense that they're paying for the same utility twice.

AT&T already does this. Normal smartphone plans ar 20 bucks a month. The retarded thing is that it's the same exact service. No caps. They just assume youll use it less and charge less. A lot of people have tried to trick them in giving the cheaper plan by buying a dumbphone, getting the cheap plan, and then switching to the iPhone or whatever

Yeah but then you're excusing US cell phone companies for charging us exorbitant prices. Look at how much they're paying in Yurop and then tell me that you're "happy" paying $30 for internet to go. At least Sprint with a lot of their packages is giving you internet and texting for free, which is how it should be.

Umm, I don't think so. There are $15 data plans specifically for dumbphones, but you can never try to "trick" them into letting you use that on a smartphone. It's available because they know you'll use less data on a dumbphone.

All smartphone plans are $30 (or $45 for enterprise) on AT&T. Unless that was something they did a few years ago, but it's not the case now.

Yeah, Rachael/Infinity is Snapdragon, as is the Acer Liquid, and the upcoming Archos Phone Tablet will probably be Snapdragon as well.

I want a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X3 badly. The Rachel UI looks fantastic. Odds are it comes out in 2010 for $2010, though :(

New HTC UI Patents.

2vxkbvr.jpg

Described in HTC patent application, called “Electronic device and user interface display method thereof”, the book like UI:
organizes applications, widgets, and web pages into pages of a virtual book. Each page of the virtual book is the UI of a service or function of the handheld electronic device. Flipping the pages of the virtual book means browsing and selecting the services and functions provided by the handheld electronic device. This book-like UI enables the user to use and manage these applications, widgets, and web pages in an easy and intuitive way like browsing a conventional printed book. The book-like UI hides the differences among applications, widgets, and web pages so that the handheld electronic device can be accessed through a uniform and convenient UI.

Any clue what network it's even maybe going to (besides not Verizon)?
It's going to be GSM. Therefore, not Verizon and not Sprint.

I think I'm going to return my Motorola Cliq to get the Samsung Behold II that's coming out in a few weeks. Can't go wrong with 800Mhz and AMOLED display.

zomg!

New video of Rachael's interface, good to see it still kicking and now being more awesome with Zune like interfaces.

*drools*

Hopefully snapdragon is actually powerful enough to run all that smoothly.

Whoah, yes, definitely Zune-like. It's great that someone is finally upgrading Android's media capabilities.

Dare I say that's the best looking music/video/picture player on Android, and it actually looks more intuitive than the iPhone's.

Please let this phone come out on T-mobile USA!

Whoa, that interface is awesome.
Not to fond of the light blue.. but definitely very attractive looking.

Every time I look at Rachael's UI, it pains me to think where the heck am I going to find all those high resolution photos and pictures with specific dimensions that would fit so nicely into the interface.

;(

Nerds don't get excited by flashiness? Since when?
I guess it depends on what the word "nerd" brings to mind.

The ones I'm thinking about don't really go wild over album art and stuff, but get more worked up about USB tethering and the like.
