Android Wear |OT| 2nd Gen is Here

I've been tooling around with a black Moto 360 for a month now and on the whole, I'm very satisfied.

The biggest letdown is the third party software - a lot of apps that would be a perfect fit have no or very slight functionality on the watch. For instance, I use Runtastic to track my training intervals but the watch only shows the total time and start/stop buttons. If I want details, like schedule, route or heartrate I have to pull out my phone... what?

The most useful things, besides notifications at a glance, are:

Google Maps/Navigation... this is awesome on your wrist. Work takes me to a lot of unfamiliar places and controlling Google maps with my voice and checking my bearings without taking out my phone is great.

Sleep Like AN Android... this is a sleep tracker that integrates perfectly with the watch and actually works better that way. The vibration alarm is too weak for me but I just have the phone ping me when my sleep ebbs around the alarm time.

Evernote... The most recent notes I take on any device show up as a card on my watch. I wasn't too sure about the usefulness of this but it's become a productivity lifesaver. Conversely, dictating a note to my watch and having it save to Evernote is very useful when running or travelling (like a single thought, phone number or website.)

The battery life is about a day with pretty intensive use (and on top of that I have an animated wallpaper behind my watch face, Alien 3D) but the charging is real quick. I did turn off the wrist rotation activation, I'm fine with just touching the screen. I've become used to popping my watch in the stand for about 30 minutes around lunch and dinnertime, that keeps everything going even when I wear it for sleep tracking.

Any word on when the next Moto 360 will show up?

Considering that the previous one just released like in September I wouldn't expect them to release a new one super soon. I don't think watches will have the yearly iteration that smart phones have though I'm probably wrong. I mean Pebble 1 and 2 are gonna be 2 years apart. And Samsung is its own different beast with its like 3-4 watches.

So no, no word so far.

No it just wants to see your heart pulse.

I don't know but i hope it's soon, i'm ready for an upgrade.
I hope they give this one some nice updates or something before that. I feel like I'll be keeping this for another year before buying another smart watch. Just too much money to upgrade every time

Amazon has marked down all variations of the Moto 360. The black and silver ones are both $180. I'm guessing this is in response to the Apple Watch, but I also hope it is Amazon's way of clearing stock for a second gen model.

I'd think it was more clearing stock for a new one. The Apple watch would arguably increase interest in smart watches, and anyone with an android phone can't use an Apple watch anyway. So it should (at least temporarily) firm up prices,me specially as they are lower than apple watch anyway.

Best Buy also has the same sale, however they are also running a promo that you get $100 off with any android smart phone purchase. This works with prepaid android phones. I picked up a Tmobile ZTE Zinger with this ($40 phone) and received $100 off the total.

This also stacks with their current student promo for $25 off the 360.

Cost me $100 after tax for both the phone and the moto 360. I already have a buyer lined up for the phone for $30 so the 360 will end up costing me only $70.

Best time to buy one is right now at best buy with that deal. If a new one comes along, I can easily sell this for more than the $70 I paid lol.

I run with my phone and the LG G on my wrist, using Runtastic and listening to either a Runtastic Story Run or a podcast. It's still a bit cold here so I'm wearing a running jacket. Every time the jacket touches the surface of the watch it goes into listening mode which pauses all audio. I hate that. What can I do to change that? Wearing the watch over my jacket could be an option but only if it doesn't rain.

Put the watch in theater mode?

Put the watch in theater mode?

Oh right, it has that. Never used it before. What I like to do during the run is look at the watch and see how long my current session has been going on. I guess I'd have to tap the screen to see the time during the run. I'll try it. Thanks.

That reminds me, if your Moto 360 ever dies while you're watching a movie, be prepared to hear your phone notifications return. Once your phone disconnects from it, it'll exit silent mode even if you set all volumes to silent manually.

I know this because due to an unfortunate combination of the watch dying while in a theater, Moto X thinking I'm traveling even after sitting still for over an hour, and having Touchless controls read my text messages out loud automatically when I'm driving, everyone in that theater probably heard my phone asking me if I wanted my text message read out loud. On top of that, because I couldn't say anything to cancel out of that mode while trying to desperately pull my phone from out of my backpack to shut it off, it kept requesting "What's that? Couldn't hear you. What's that? Couldn't hear you. Okay, maybe next time."

Thankfully they fixed that battery drain for the 360 but I now have my phone off whenever I'm in a movie. Never had an issue with it just being in silent up until that point.

That sounds great.

Using nine as my work exchange app because sony's 5.0 update Smart Lock doesn't work properly. Anyway, just found the customisable vibration patterns, and they transmit to the watch too. So when I get a work email the watch will vibrate like a heartbeat. Nice, now I can differentiate based on the vibration

I actually went running with my moto x in my pocket yesterday, and I just found out today that it took 214 photos of my pocket. apparently the "twist for camera" gesture kept going off and my phones camera was on for almost the entire run. during that run it must've been hitting my leg or something because I wound up will all those pics. The only reason I found out about it was because my watch kept mysteriously telling me to "tap to start capture". needless to say I won't be having that gesture on when I run anymore

lol

I'm glad I haven't gone out for a run. It's been winter practically for 6 months and I've been using the treadmill since. I guess that means I'll be pairing the watch to my headset directly for music, then. Only problem with a direct connection for music is you lose about 1% for every minute. That was before the last two Android Wear updates so it may have improved, but it's a steep cost for streaming music directly from the watch.

After I got the last Google Maps update, it asked me to recalibrate my compass but it seemed like it was taking forever to finish up. It was about 75% complete and it just wouldn't progress so I kept rotating it in different directions until it was done.

About a minute later, my phone starts vibrating like crazy so I check it and camera. Huh? Put it back down. *Vibrates* Pick it up. Camera again?

It did that about 6-7 times so I just let it sit there until it stopped.

It's funny how one of my favorite features of the phone can be such a pain. being out somewhere and taking a snap just after the flick of a wrist can really come in handy.

You're right about that battery drain with the music. I think it nearly died on me the first time I tried streaming music from the watch. I still pair it directly from the phone and it's been working out, it looks like I just need to disable the gesture before I run.

Do we know something about the 2nd version of the Moto 360?

There was a "leak" that said the second Moto 360 would have a full circular screen:

Of course, that pick could easily have been faked, but we should see something by June.

Is there any way to see the remaining time on a countdown timer? I expected it to be on a card that I could swipe up to see, but doesn't seem to be.

When I set a timer, there's a persistent card that shows up over the clock face that always shows the remaining time. It also cannot be swiped away as it's counting down, so I'm not sure what you're experiencing.

Looks like the watch and phone have separate timers. If I use my watch and say 'set a ten minute timer', I get a card like you say. But on the phone the clock app shows nothing under timers. If I set a timer using the phone, it sets the timer on the phone (wih a persistent notification on the lock screen), but doesn't show up on the watch.

Also oddly, if you set a timer on the phone, when it goes off it doesn't notify you on your watch.

Ah, I see what you mean. The Android Wear and Android have separate clock apps for some reason. It's a no-brainer to have them connected so I'm not sure why they don't communicate. Both Timely and the default clock app lack AW integration.

So I just purchased the moto 360 in the black metal band. I really like the looks, but i'm having an issue.

Even when i'm trying to do something (look at settings, check heart rate, whatever), the watch vibrates and the screen dims. I'm not putting my hand over the sensor (i don't think anyways) but it always kicks me back to the default watch face.

I'm using it with a nexus 6. I turned off the tilt to wake in the android wear app. It's happening with ambient mode on and off. Did i get a defective unit or am I doing something wrong?

Try factory resetting. Press the dial until it vibrates, go into settings, then choose the reset option. I'm hoping it's software because that's not normal at all.

It looks like it might be because I didn't turn off the tilt to wake feature, it didn't save. Is that feature really twitchy?

Nope. Works perfectly fine on mine and I've never had to tinker with it. The only major bugs I had after release were invisible alarms that you couldn't swipe, self-duplicating timers, and some lag that were all mostly fixed with each subsequent update.

Otherwise, the only time that my watch will not wake up when I tilt my wrist is when it's been disconnected from my phone.

OK I'm trying reset right now. Do you use ambient mode?

And it just did it without the tilt feature checked so its not that :/

Ugh, its still doing it. Guess its back to best buy?

I'll just using it, feel it vibrate, then the screen dims and it goes back to the watch face.

That, that's not right at all. I'm sure you can watch Youtube reviews showing general functions so that you can compare with what's happening to yours. Sounds like a defective unit. :*(

I thought the Verge was super Apple biased but giving the Apple Watch a 7 was super surprising.

They're not that biased IMO. Its usually just a bunch of salty Android fans complaining that they give the iPhone, iPad and Macbooks the score that they deserve. Whining that they don't give mediocre Android products a similar score. When there is a great Android product it usually gets a high rating alongside its Apple counterpart. The verge isn't allowed to talk about a product they actually enjoy thanks to Android fans. Now that they have actually created a mediocre product, it got the score it deserved.

Agreed.

Swapped my moto 360 and I definitely had a defective unit. Actually usable now and doesn't kick back to the watch face every few minutes. Loving it so far. Got the black metal version.

That's great! I have the same one and since I have a habit of having my left hand in my lap, it's suffered many hard bumps into various objects whenever scooch in closer to my desk. That and other miscellaneous and random collisions. I took this yesterday:

I've had it since launch.

Getting close to impulse-buy price. Might be a good gifting option unless the True 360 is vastly superior (which is obviously going to be given that damn chip, Motorola!).
