Ushio and Tora, either version, it's worth getting into.
The OVA has a better art-style, direction and pacing imo, but cuts off very early on, swap the order of some events (with an original episode), and skip some important events.
Meanwhile, the new anime actually finishes the story, and sticks closer to the manga, but the art-style and direction is worse, and feels rushed, also skips a lot of events from the manga. though not as important as what the OVA skipped.
Regardless of your poison, the characters are really likable, and the story (in the new version) gets seriously very good later on, with the creation of the beast spear, a seriously threatening villain, and some mindblowing, game-changing plot-twists.
But If you really don't like the downsides of either version, then read the manga.
