Anime that could work as an American television series

Ben-to

Instead of people fighting over half price Ben-to. People fight each other over all kinds of deals in Walmart/BestBuy/Target/Gamestop.etc. Each season will have a final focus on each event such as Black Friday, Christmas.etc

Spice and Wolf
The only major special effects involve Holo and the rare magical beasts. The script is so good they would have to cast the worst actors in the world to screw it.

It would be a great dating, family show.

Initial D+Hajime no Ippo +Kuruko's Basketball

All 3 need to be reworked in terms of settings and relationship storylines but the stuff revolving around the competitions would remain intact.

All 3 of them will need a very competent set of directors who know how to present the action well.

Any network picking these 3 up would become the sport's drama network instantly.

Hopefully ESPN isn't the one to realize the potential.

Death Note

Just like Spice and Wolf the budget won't be stretched since the fantasy elements are minimally portrayed. This would be the most difficult show to pull off because everyone needs to be good. The actors, writers (who will adjust the show so it can be extended to 80 episodes[20 episode seasons]), editors, producers, composer, audio director, gaffers.

Everyone.

I always thought Steins;Gate could work pretty well. You'd probably have to change some characters and remove the otaku-centric stuff, but it could definitely work. Probably be super cheap, too, and it lends itself well to that drip feed of little mysteries and conspiracies and stuff.

I'm an idiot. Stein's Gate would definitely work though that first episode will be brutal and confusing as hell for a lot of people. It could kill off half the audience right then and there. It would need some adjustments because the some of jokes and social cues were too Japenese centric but the show overall is great.

Monster would be horribly adapted.

Polar Bear's Cafe would definitely work.

*yuck*

That show is awful. Worst recommendation someone on gaf made. Seinfeld anime my ass.

lol at Hell Girl OP
Kids on the Slope would totally work (maybe even better as live action lol), Mushi-shi could be pretty cool if the effects were done right, maybe Samurai Champloo if the choreography was good

Better than Seinfeld!

Yamato 2199 is probably the only recent anime that would be decent, especially if they just cut back on the unnecessary fanservice. Anything else that I can come up with has teen characters or is just too Japanese to be adapted without losing something in translation.

I pray every day in hopes that Del Toro will succeed in getting HBO to pick up Monster.

Death Note is an obvious one as the majority have pointed out, but seems much more likely to be getting a movie or two instead if they can ever get the script together for it.

Psycho-Pass would be a good one considering they could easily extend the premise to reach multiple seasons.

Eden of the East could also easily be adapted

Monster
Death Note

I want to say Welcome to the N.H.K, but I can't see it working as an american tv show given the character motivations.

Monster. Obviously.

Monster. The show is perfect for adapting. The Anime feels like it should belong on HBO

Monster (Del Toro, please do the adaptation after Silent Hills ;_;) and Jormungand.

I'd also go with Monster.

Although I suppose Death Note also works.

Like others said, Monster is perfect. Biggest question is who will play Mumei.

Well, we already know Monster would work on TV. It was kind of already done decades ago - The Fugitive

Psycho Pass, Ghost in the Shell, Space Dandy.
I don't think Space Dandy would work very well with a tv series. The ever changing locations and characters would get expensive I presume. Plus, Space Dandy was nice for the different people to experiment. Something build similiar to Space Dandy with creative minds of america would work, but not Space Dandy itself.

Black Lagoon feels like something HBO would've made, at least thematically. Maybe if the over the top violence was toned down, it could pass on TV. Otherwise, going slightly off topic, it'd be perfect as a film. Very Tarantino in style.

I think it feels much more like somethin their sister channel- Cinemax would habe. Heck..Banshee already is the closest thing on TV to Black Lagoon.

Monster, Mushishi and perhaps Death Note.

Cowboy Bebop would probably require too big of a budget.

I honestly don't think Mushishi would work. I mean..it would be a great show, but it's to quiet and slow moving to gather a big audience. Same with Natsume or most slice of life shows. They really work only in animation.

I think an American version of Death Note could be amazing if they get the right people working on it. They would have to come up with a lot of original material because of the 40 minute run time, so the pacing probably won't be as good as the anime. 3 seasons with 10-13 episodes each would do the show justice.

This is all wishful think anyway so I don't really care if it'd gather a large audience or not. It would be doable in a tv show format.

Although, the Leftovers is pretty damn slow. Has it gotten decent ratings?

GTO easily would work well, particularly on something like FX

Or Ghost Hunt, would be a good series as well that I could see working.

Attack on Titan seems like one of the last shows that would work, barring shonen super powers...and isn't really a lot like Battlestar Galactica. They have one (relatively important) similarity but it ends there.

All Takahashi works from the 80's, for the most part, had elements of Three's Company in them.

Sazae-san would work as a sitcom.

Most of the good ones have been mentioned.
Definitely Black Lagoon though, maybe on Cinemax since they aren't against more action oriented shows like Strike Back.

Darker Than Black i agree would also be great. I could see it on Network tv, kinda like a darker version of Heros.

I could easily see Red Garden being a CW show in the vein of Buffy and Supernatural.

Berserk would be perfect for HBO.

Berserk would be great for HBO sometime after GOT or some channel that wants to compete with GOT. IDK how they would do The Eclipse on TV though haha. Hoping one of these days we get an update on Del Toro's Monster series for HBO as well.

This is something that bugs me, why does anime have so many different sports drama's yet American television doesn't have a single show about baseball or basketball or football players?
How cool would it be watching one college football player's rise to stardom and troubles within?

Friday night lights? They tried play maker with football but NFL shut it down

There was Friday Night Lights a few years ago, but that was high school football. Still pretty good from what I hear.

Anything to do with the pros will never be as good as reality. This NFL season alone had a bunch of craziness.

playmaker was amazing, too bad the nfl didn't like it. You got steroid , gay player, and domestic violence and that just season 1

That's a good one. Although will probably make the show even more uncomfortable to watch.

Welcome to the NHK
Starring some neck beard.
What's the American equivalent of
H-games and Comiket
?

One Outs for American TV!

Any of Urasawa's works really (Master Keaton,20th Century Boys, monster, pluto)

20th Century Boys would be just amazing .

Is it the violence? I don't think it would be that big of a deal.
HBO can barely afford stuff like the dragons in GoT. And that show is making bank all over the place.

Berserk and especially AoT would need an impossible budget to make anything close to a genuine adaptation.

Not to mention that there's a huge gap between GoT/Banshee/Hannibal violence and the shit that goes down in Berserk.
