Another SNES CD prototype was found. So that's cool

Granted you can 100% understand why Nintendo got cold feet...a SNES that just loaded data from discs and didn't improve the performance of the base SNES minus red book audio and cheaper storage....maybe not a winning formula especially after they gave away the keys to the mushroom kingdom to Sony in the deal with licensing fees

But as a bit of video game rarity esoterica...gotta love it

Ive been playing a lot of pc engine cd rigs lately and cussing Nintendo out the whole time just thinking of what developers like square could have done with the snes-cd

Well that was on Nintendo to demand to Sony that if this is going to be a deal, then it has to have some capabilities boosted, like the Sega CD had (albeit few developers took advantage..) and besides, look how long it took Nintendo to actually release a console using a form of compact disc, they dragged their heels with it, otherwise the N64 should have been CD based from the get-go...the irony is, you would think Phillips who also had the keys to the mushroom kingdom would have made it a point to ensure the Zelda and Mario games were on par with the SNES had, but I guess they weren't bothered..

On a separate note this game, is a good example of what might have been for the Nintendo "Super CD"....

Nintendo normally has its head planted firmly in its ass and its only occasionally (Wii / Switch) that it pulls its own head out to see the sunshine for a moment

They could have boosted capabilities with carts the way NEC did with the cards (i. e. Arcade Card Duo) for the PCE CD, no?

And it was definitely Sony/Ken Kutaragi in the driver's seat the whole time. It was all about those sweet licensing fees, not just for games, but for other uses (i. e. karaoke, movies, and e-books). Nintendo wasn't paying attention until it was too late.

There is no evidence of any plans to expand the abilities of the hardware

And yes Nintendo made a bad deal then regretted it

I always keep asking myself two questions

- Why the f* Nintendo signed a deal so bad ? (bad for Nintendo, in this case, i assume Sony did not put a gun against Nintendo's head and force it :-D)
- Why the f* Nintendo kicked Sony in so public and humiliating manner?

Sony pestered Nintendo into it.

not like this GIF

Would have likely meant Nintendo would be reduced to a Sony subsidiary after getting screwed on royalties (losing all of the 3rd party ones AND having to pay Sony if they wanted to put their games on CD). Might be hyperbole, but barring a later start to the PS1 gen, Sony would have started with even more mindshare.

The MSU-1 is much faster than the PSX and the Saturn CD drive, and the "Super CD" would have been even slower, so the port would have been much worse on real hardware.

If I'm not mistaken, starting from the second plan for the CD add-on with phillips this time, they were planning to use a cartridge with additionnal hardware, just like the Mega-CD, and it is that SFC/Pal SNES with a CD drive add-on underneat we always see images of in old magazines.

Finding another Sony prototype is cool but if anyone could ever find this Philips prototype (if it wasn't just a concept art) that would be crazy.
