All I know is that a few months ago, we were debating whether or not PS3 could even meet the Blu-Ray spec for max AVC bitrate (see here...)

Now they are saying they can decode 2x 40Mbps AVC streams in realtime? OMGWTFBBQ (if true)...
Heh, what will that amir guy at MS say to this? "HD DVD is more efficient with lower bitrate and VC-1! Diminishing returns FTW" :lol

It's not what you said it's how many times you've done this. You go to PS3 threads specifically to say something negative to remind us how much PS3 sucks. Especially positive PS3 threads are honey to the bee type of situation for you.

Well since irony is involved I'm sure you two can find one post I made this month where I troll X360. In case you don't reply I'll just assume that you couldn't.

Don't be lazy, do your own searches. We all know you do it. It doesn't have to be this month.

Wait, isn't RGB better than YCrCb? Isn't VGA (RGB) > Component (YCrCb) on the 360?

YCrCb is the native encoding format on DVDs and BDs. So it makes sense to keep in the same colourspace otherwise you have to convert to RGB for processing then back to YCrCb for video out, losing colour resolution on the way (resulting in banding etc)

When it supports the most common HD standard - 720p - you can start talking it up. Until then it's still kind of a joke.
Regardless of that, it's probably the best BD player there is right now (and if you have a 1080p TV, it's almost unquestionably the best, according to tests I've seen). That's without even calculating in the price that's twice as low as the next competitor.

that's when I noticed the 24Mbps on the back (5th Element and Ricky Bobby don't have the video bitrate on the back of theres, but a lot of the BRs at Best Buy did, which is where I compared.)
You can see the bitrate and codec of the movies being played in PS3 by pressing Select button during playback. I suspect neither has much to do with quality there. It's more about the quality of film transfer.

Yeah...MI:III on Blu-ray has bitrate peaks of 38mbps during the bridge missile scene....you will never see those kind of peaks on HD-DVD since the MAX bitrate for that format(audio, video and data) is only 36mbps...

Getting a Pioneer Elite PDP 1140HD so this is good news for MEE :)

What are the differences between the 1140HD and the non-Elite PDP-5070? And what about the gaming lag that some here and at AVS have complained about?

I'm also looking into these sets, but haven't really started yet.

1140 and 5070 are fundementally the same TV...

BUT

1140 has more picture settings (i.e. tweakablity) and so it is possible to get a better picture than the 5070 if you know what you are doing.....

Also, that gold Elite finish just makes you feel good inside :D

P.S. There is no problem with gaming lag on Pioneer/Elite Plasmas, AFAIK....Dark10x has a PDP 4270HD (awesome TV, BTW) and he has all the systems so he could give you a fair input on that...

Right, but for movie fans it's mana from heaven. Movies will actually look and "feel" like original prints. Or at least as close as you can get.

Oh, I understand ... I'm actually hoping they'll do 1080p/24 for upscaled DVD as well.

I just always expected it would be added. There was never a doubt we would see it at some point. The DVD stuff was completely out of left-field ... and took me by surprise.

Did you read some of the other goodies?

Specifically the SACD and DVD stuff I highlighted on the first page?

This is literally the first PS3 thread that's making me wish I had one. I guess the good news is that by the time I do snag one most of this stuff will have been put in via firmware updates.

FYI - For those that have a PS3, get the SACD of "Dark Side of the Moon"... It's a religious experience with a proper sound setup.

Yes, its very impressive, but not that surprising to me because so much processing is available via CELL which will run rings around the chips included in any SACD player on the market....

Helps that SACD and DSD is Sony's format so they know its secrets pretty well :D

BTW, I have a modified Sony SCD-XA9000ES SACD Player and, believe it or not, my PS3 sounds better that it whenever I play discs that were (re)mastered in DSD (Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" or David Sanches' "Coral")

Sounds like Sony is serious with supporting everything they can via software updates. Great!

Sony should focus on fixing the nagging issues before they start adding more feel-good stuff. Don't get me wrong, i want DVD upscaling too, but backgrounding downloads should've been fixed yesterday.

On the PSP, Sony has taken too long to fix the nags (UMD autoloading option just came out), and still have a ways to go (MP3 playback during web-browsing for instance). While I have found the direct RSS feeds to be my most-used feature (even surpassing games), I wish they'd get the interface stuff right first.

I wonder how long it will be until you can overlay the XMB interface ANYTIME for any reason. The way you can fade in the XMB during movie playback should work no matter what, especially during gameplay. You should never be in a situation where the XMB isn't available. Considering the reports that the OS is using as much as 96MB ram at all time, there's no excuse for missing this.

Try the bootleg DVD-A taken from the original Quad masters. The mix blows Guthrie's SACD away...

KLee,

Yeah, I suppose the SACD stuff isn't too surprising from a tech POV ... but the simple fact that they are even bothering to go for that level of quality on a 'near dead' platform is a pleasant surprise IMO.

The DVD stuff on the other hand - that seems out of nowhere. I mean, I certainly expected they would do upscaling in the future, but I didn’t expect that they would extrapolate high-bit color information and pass it via HDMI 1.3. I’m glad to see they are really trying to push the feature-set of HDMI 1.3. Good news for all IMO.

Now for the per-title noise reduction filtering … that is simply a work of genius. Sure, IDing DVDs to get cover art and content info is great and all … but this is just a brilliant idea.

Bravo IMO!

Other than upscaling, there's nothing specific that excites me-- but this does show how dedicated they are to improvements, and that firmware upgrades are coming. I believed so (based on the PSP's feature gorwth) but this is good news for all the folks who have some issues now.

It doesn't specify what firmware release some of these upgrades are tied to.

However, the following are listed for the December update to coincide with the remote control release (at least in Japan):

SACD :

* However, last Friday, Honda went to a place for the interview with Ken Kutaragi for some audio/videophile magazine. They brought there an even newer version with a decimation filter at 24bit/176.4kHz. Also, the 64-bit DP internal data of the decimation filter is rounded down to 30-29-bit instead of 24-bit for the output. The dynamic range is over 170dB and the theoretical number reaches 180dB in 30-bit. Honda says its sound was really good even when compared with the sound of the 1.1 version firmware. The Sony developer attributes the goodness to the fact that the software SACD codec of the PS3 processes all data in 64-bit double precision. This new firmware version will be available when the BD remote is released in December.

BluRay :

* Actually Kutaragi also ordered the development of the version with YCrCb internal processing at the final review. In the firmware version released in December it becomes possible for a user to choose RGB or YCrCb.

(the above will help with banding in bright and dark color gradations)

I wouldn't hold my breath on browsing while listening to music on the PSP. I think that might be a little too taxing on the hardware.

I wish they would get the DVD upscaling issue fixed by december. That would kickass.

Quick question:

I have a ps3, I have a 720p/1080i compatible TV

Can I watch Blu Ray movies in 1080i?

One of the biggest difference on Elite plasmas is hundreds of dollars worth of optical quality glass.

Geez, stop giving Stinkles shit. What part of him stating that he owns a PS3 did you not understand? He wants native 720p playback. Seriously, how many of you who are giving him crap own an HDTV? 720p sets are a lot more common than 1080p. I own 2 720p sets and only 1 of the 10 sets my immediate family owns is 1080p capable. Not supporting 720p resolution out of the box was downright retarded.

His BDs will look fantastic right now out of the box if his 720p display is anything like mine ;)

There's reason to complain if the scaler on your TV really sucks. But I guess with PS3 scaling the picture on better TVs will be even better still, so there's definitely reason to have that. But I'm not complaining for now, just because it looks great as is for me. Give me PS3-scaling and I might not go back, though, for sure.

The PDP xx50/1 HD series Pios have the same glass as the Elites, belive it or not.....that is why they are in such high demand..

Hey frank, what kind of TV do you have....if it has a good scaler/deinterlacer then don't worry about the 720p Blu-ray movie issue :)
