PANIC!

Still very early, but not looking good. If it does bad critically it will have bad word of mouth. Second week might have a massive drop at box office, especially going up against Pixels. I think it ends up with $450MIL worldwide. Which is pretty good for a debut.

Edit: Also in before the Edgar Wright was right doom posts.

I couldn't cancel my tickets so I threw out my credit card

I pre-emptively destroyed my PS4 and TV so I could never watch it at home. You know what, fuck it, might aswell burn my house down just to be safe

This movie needed to pull some big review numbers to do well in my opinion. But then again, who knows. It's marvel.
This film has always had an uphill battle, especially since the Edgar Wright debacle.

I think the projected opening weekend take of 65 million would be a very good opening; that's right in line with Thor and Cap's debuts.

The only people I saw push the risky narrative were Marvel fans and sites like BAD. Others pointed out that shit like Star Wars exist. No one expected it to make money at first because the first trailers were shit. Then Marvel started marketing it better.
There was a prevalent overarching narrative that it was a risky venture that can be corroborated with numerous articles citing GotG as such prior to its release.

Whether or not it was actually risky or if that was a misconception perpetuated in the internet echo chamber is certainly up for debate, but saying the narrative was just fanboy drivel is pretty blatant revisionist history.

Reading reviews, it's kind of what I dreaded: A good premise with a decent amount of heart and some originality, but bogged down by boring, stilted dialogue with humor that doesn't punch where it should. It sounds like it might have some kind of angle that turns it into a cult classic, though.

Basically: not bad, but generally bland. Doubt I'll manage to gather anyone to see it.

I just don't want this to flop and scare off marvel from future attempts with taking chances. But it is marvel and they tend to do pretty well at box office

Plenty of people just on GAF who would definitely not identify themselves as Marvel fans said shit like the movie looked too weird, wouldn't be mainstream enough, who even heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy anyway, etc. Suggesting that it was self-generated (for some reason) by Marvel fans is pretty revisionist -- especially when we've seen this exact same narrative pop up several times before (Iron Man, Thor, now Ant-Man) and dismissed in the exact same fashion.

I think the survival of Panther and Carol's films are on this movie. Yes, GOTG helped but I fear this underperforms, I fear they might get boned.

60% isn't terrible, just divisive. Going to wait and see what my friends say when they see it.

When you're getting those sub 40% numbers, then yeah it's probably universally terrible.

Yeah, that's kind of how I'm looking at it right now. It sounds like the movie has some serious charm... it's just lacking in some areas. Basically, a cult classic. It might get divisive reviews but get good word of mouth from fans.

I feel like this movie would have probably reviewed much better if it had been released 5 years ago, much like Spiderman 3 would be reviewed much worse were it reviewed today. That's the world we live in.

Not every marvel movie can be a winner, it's just that 2014 was so damned awesome after the divisive iron man 3 and boring thor: the dark world.

I'm still seeing it and will make up my own mind on it.

Pretty much, the bar is getting higher with each super hero movie.

Still we're at 20 reviews, that's really low so it could go eitherway.

It seems all the negative reviews really fixate on Edgar Wright. It's weird. Poor Peyton Reed.

I mean, this was going to be inevitable.

Edgar Wright is a critical darling, for good reason. If this movie falters in any area it'd be easy to assume that Wright would deliver a more exciting movie.

I think there's genuinely a rift between people who accept Wright's departure and people who don't, given I've also seen a lot of praise for the aspects that were rewritten once Wright left.

Equally though I think it could just be the film showing the scars of all the rewrites a la World War Z (but hopefully with more faith to the source material and less terrible)

All the good parts: They were Edgar Wrights idea!
Any bad parts: Clearly this is Peytons fault!

This film is how you can learn which critics to discard and which ones to keep.

Shall read some in a sec, but actually surprised so many early negative reviews.

I really thought this was a homerun for them.

Peyton gave an interview about what changed in the script. It's pretty much what people expected. They made it tie into the MCU more. The fight in the girl's room was Wrights idea but they expanded on it. The comedy beats are mostly Wrights. He pointed out two things other things that were changed but those are spoilers.
