The anti-vaccine movement has met its newest foe, and it is a 12-year-old boy who loves lizards. Several anti-vax organizations have been pooling their collective intellectual powers for weeks to try to debunk, discredit, or “unmask” Marco Arturo, a budding scientist who made a viral Facebook video about vaccines. Also, he’s a child. They’re attacking a child.

Arturo lives in northern Mexico with his family; he had a surprise smash hit with a video he posted on May 24 called “Vaccines DO cause autism,” where he unfurled a folder filled with the evidence. The folder is full of empty white pages, because vaccines don’t cause autism.

In the meantime, as the science blog Respectful Insolence noted last week, the doxxing and “unmasking” efforts began in earnest. Let’s remember that this is, again, in response to a Facebook video made by a 12-year-old, in his backyard.

But a virulent portion of the anti-vax movement is, as we wrote last year, comfortable harassing, threatening, and revealing the personal information of people they disagree with. That evidently extends to children; a blogger named Levi Quackenboss wrote two posts speculating that Arturo is “a hoax” and “a little catfish,” a “pawn” of his parents and/or the pharmaceutical industry

Basically she is attempting to say that my parents must be the ones debating anti-vaxxers on the internet 24/7 because when she was my age she had no idea of what immunology was. I want to thank Levi in advance because she made me feel proud of myself by thinking that someone like me could not possibly exist. The “too good to be true” thing. Then she said that by reading my response and then reading your own journal from when you were my age, you could easily tell that I was not a child, but an adult because of the way I phrase sentences. Then she said that my parents didn’t manage to act like I was really twelve, which made it obvious that it wasn’t me.

I want to make something clear (but I know that y’all 9/11 truthers still won’t believe me anyway), and that’s the fact that no word that has been written by my page was written by anyone else other than me. Every comment, every post, I’ve written everything. Although, of course, other people help me admin the page for me, including my mother, who lets me monitor the page through her. However, as I said, I am the only content-provider. I love that you believe I’m an adult because of the way I write.


Imagine you were autistic. Just for a second, imagine you were autistic, and to see how many people stopped protecting their children against diseases because they’re too afraid to have a child like you. Now that, is a lot more hateful than my video, which was defending all autistic people. How would you feel, knowing that people would rather have a dying child than a child like you?

That’s why the whole scientific and autistic community is on my side. Because I’m defending their rights. Because I’m standing up for them. Or might I say, for us.

Are we sure anti-vaxxers aren't a hoax perpetrated by this kid's parents to make him look good? They got Jenny McCarthy on the payroll forever ago, building to this moment.

Because this whole thing just makes him look amazing.

But you know, logic and reason don't factor in to these people so it won't work. They just focus on whatever works in their favour and inflate it as if it were the only argument.

I have 0 tolerance for the anti Vax movement, which I didn't even think was a thing until a few years back I ran into some real morons on various forums that were not even dedicated to health issues.

That a large portion from said movement is actually coming from well-off educated progressive people just seems mind boggling to me, I have to add.
Basically my opinion is that being anti-Vaxx is basically being pro-disease, misery and death, starting with your own children, but extending to your entire community.

I kept imagining anti-vaxxers as Scooby Doo villains after they've been caught and unmasked as I read the article.

Man fuck anti-vaxxers they're the god damn worst. I was a kid like that when I was 12, debating creationists and thuthers, anti-vaxxers, etc. I never got Doxxed or shit of course, but that would be awful if I was. The fact that he's autistic himself makes it even worse.

This is the same people who have no problem going after Sandy Hook parents, so the fact they're going after what they think is an "imaginary" 12 year old is absolutely no shock to me. It's all smoke and mirrors to them.

And yes, I do know someone who outed himself as a truther to me, so I'm somehow now very familiar with what these idiots think and do.

I was curious about this too, because I've seen the complaint on GAF a few times. From what I could tell around a week ago there wasn't anything in their platform about this, but I'd appreciate any further clarification.

Kid is awesome.

I don't know, but in my experience it tends to be well-off "liberal" people who believe in this the most, the ones who take their hatred of big pharma and use it to color their views of everything they could possibly touch.

Yeah, but that one guy (who was immediately debunked through the peer-review process that scientific study cannot work without) said it does. That's all the evidence they need.

I honestly couldn't believe there were people who actually were anti vaccine until I read about this movement a few years back.

Absolutely disgusting with all the education and resources and physicians providing easily accessible research studies and people still cling onto false notions that vaccines are somehow bad for you.

You can understand where they're coming from though. From their point of view, think of how ignorant they are as a full grown adult. In that light it seems entirely impossible that a 12 year old is smart.

Can't fucking stand anti-vaxxers. Fucking scum with one of the nastiest views on people different than them. I'm glad they're in the minority. If the whole world thought like that then I probably would have been killed as an infant.

I can't believe these monsters are harassing a goddamned child! Just when you think they could be worse... I hope nothing else bad happens to the kid or his parents.

Wait until you hear about the ones refusing medicine to their kids because God will heal them. Or they die because it's God's plan.

I salute the shit out of this kid.

Having been on the receiving end of people, in person, telling me that its my fault for having autism and that I'm a horrible person..... yeah, I can safely say that anti-vaxxers will do ANYTHING to validate their worldviews.

Like, okay, you don't believe autism is natural got it; but to actively seek out autistic people and fight with them is insane.
