Any last minute predictions on how well Fallout 4 will rate critically?

It would be hilarious if they scored 84 and missed out on a bonus

You have a point there, but an early embargo with glowing reviews can give a huge boost to preorder sales. I don't see why they would pass on that if they had confidence in their product.

Its Fallout, it doesn't need glowing reviews for sales. People will buy it regardless.

Glowing reviews AND story spoilers. Bethesda isn't going to do that. They COULD tell journos to not spoil the story, but I'm fairly certain Bethesda wants to hold this experience as far close to the chest as possible for their fans.

Look how ridiculously stingy they have been with gameplay details so far. I guess we only know about the number of factions in the game only because of the trophy leak, but a lot of those many of us could figure out. Everything else will be shiny and new. Just imagine. This time next week you'll be salivating at the making of video that will be released and thinking "Thank god I haven't spoiled myself too much. . .this looks fantastic!" That's the magic Bethesda is trying to maintain for people.

Bethesda games always fair well critically. Hell, their games are usually trainwrecks and they always receive 9s and 10s.

I've never experienced this train wreck you speak off. I've played each of their games at launch and I've been able to compete each one of them with minimal issues. No different from other large open world RPG.

I've never seen this much hype for a game in a while. I got Fallout 3 for Christmas in 2008 and got my ass handed to me in that game and gave up. Maybe because I was 12 and never played a game like that before. I might give it a go with Fallout 4. High 90's with all the hype it's getting. But seeing how generally Bethesda games run like shit on PlayStation, I will wait it out.

Tinfoil hat and all but I wouldn't be surprised if some journos scored this lower or will be more critical due to lack of typical preview+impressions cycle for the game. Curse them for announcing and releasing in the same FY!

It felt like the press already had their 9/10 and 10/10 scores decided after all the gushing from the first trailer and E3 demo. I'll be shocked if it isn't the best reviewed game of the year and the GOTY winner from most outlets.

High 80s.
Most likely.

It'll be my game of the year though. I know I haven't played it but this game is the specific reason why I went Next Gen. I'll most likely play it for hundred of hours and won't get enough. From what I've played personally this year, Until Dawn would be #2.

Around 90%. Although I'd like to be proved wrong I'm expecting criticism of a relatively short main quest line which is unimaginative and/or predictable, along with some balance issues and the odd technical issue.

None of which matter in the slightest to me.

Seeing how many games journalists declared it a front runner for goty months before playing it, a 90+ metacritic is assured. Even the PS3 version of Skyrim has a 92 metacritic lol

Reviewers will complain the writing is terrible, the combat is terrible, the world is a bit boring and it's incredibly buggy.

And give it somewhere in the low mid 90s. Because Bethesda.

90+ despite the bugs and awful writing, then Obsidian's title with the same bugs and much better writing scores at least 10 points lower. Still excited for the game though, warts and all.

Haha, wow! So many people are super down on a game they've seen about 5 minutes of footage of, and haven't even played yet. Good job living the cliche, guys!

94ish

Personally, I think Bethesda will probably have done improvements to the combat, graphics and the usual jazz they always do with new games, I don't however have any faith that they can pull off world building, cohesiveness and writing. Fallout 3 vs. Fallout New Vegas is still a great example of what you get if you let a team of actually experienced writers handle the game, a vastly superior game in terms of story, characters, writing and world building. Bethesda hasn't managed to pull off story in their last 3 major RPGs, I have doubts that Fallout 4 will make a difference.

I stick with the 92, even it's going to be full of bugs at launch, broken online multiplayer if available, probably with a mediocre technical performance, repetitive stuff, bad writing, most design stuff reused from the previous game in the series, graphical downgrade with not great visuals and as only meaningful new features some stuff copied from other top selling games (in this case not only AAA, they also have the Minecraft thing of building your shelter).

If it was a EA, Sony or Ubisoft game, in Metacritic would be in the high seventies or in the low eighties. But games like that from CD-Project or Bethesda go to the low nineties. Specially from US reviewers.

I didn't realise Notch was present at the advent of civilisation where neanderthals huddled in caves to escape the cold.
Neanderthals didn't make videogames, so obviously didn't have big sellers to copy. Which means it's quite hard to use their game features or gameplay mechanics as reference.

But I'd say Minecraft was the first big seller videogame where it was key to build your own shelter to survive, something that also influenced other indie games with crafting and more focused into survival.
