Any Libertines fans here?

When I talk about this rather popular band from the UK, I get weird looks even from rock fans. I know they broke up the band late last year, but it always seems like there isn't any respect for this band on this side of the ocean. God I love 'em.

They're good at what they do - but it's just the whole "rockstar" thing that's a huge turnoff.
The attention from NME doesn't help either.

the whole rockstar thing is the best part really. they write really catch songs, and the lead singer is a junkie. what more could you want.

also the first album is so scrappy and dirty how could you not love it?

I was going to post this very topic. They do in fact rule. I favor Up the Bracket but both albums are excellent. Do you have the "I Get Along" US single? "Don't look back into the Sun" is incredible.

I am eagerly awaiting Babyshambles full length album (I have only heard Killamangiro, I like it a lot).

That's because "Rock Fans" in the US have bad taste. This is a country where Limp Bizkit is the predominant sound for God's sake!

Medicore NME pap that would have been forgotten ages ago if it wasn't for Pete Docherty's off the rails behavior.

His off the rails behaviour isn't off the rails enough and the music wouldn't match such an image anyway.

I see pictures and read about Pete Doherty, the smack rat junkie, and I feel sorry for him.
I read about Motley Crue, and I think - that's fucking cool!

I had far more respect for Carl. I saw him front the band at T in the Park last year, and I didn/t (still don't) particularly like the band, but the atmosphere and set was great.

Any The Clash fan owes it to himself to at least give the band some attention. I only own 5-6 songs from the first album on mp3s, and I bought the second album on the day of its release. Their songs are catchy, have good lyrics, and the vocals are just cool as hell, especially on Can't Stand Me and What Became of the Likely Lads.. Their guitar work is sometimes lazy on recordings, but they kick ass live. Don't Look Back into the Sun is a pretty freakin great song, whoever mentioned it.

Mick Jones pretty much made The Libertines. They're much better than most mainstream "rock" music and definitely better than most of the underground punk scene. But they're pretty much just a mediocre and more modernized Clash.

The best thing Pete Doherty has done is get busted and become the initial inspiration for Patrick Wolf's song "The Libertine".

Up the Bracket was a fantastic rock/punk album full of addictive melodies and surprisingly sweet lyrics. The random, sometimes incoherent mumblings are lots of fun. The second album was a letdown to me, especially after the great opener Can't Stand Me Now. Every song thereafter couldn't quite live up to the first track. Still, not a bad album.

i think they're great. it's sad that pete can't take drugs in sane amounts, and it's sad that the press find this romantic. but this doesn't make the two records any less exuberant or inventive or tuneful. i hope there's another record. and i hope i get to see the full lineup someday.

I've only just started listening to Up The Bracket and it's pretty cool. Only heard the second album in a mate's car on the way into work and I wondered why it sounded so sappy. I'll have to give it more of a listen.

Up The Bracket is good though.

There is a reson the second album is so sappy. Half of it is about Pete's inability or nondesire to kick drugs.

For instance:

What Became of the Likely Lads

Please don't get me wrong
See I forgive you in a song
We'll call "The Likely Lads"
But if it's left to you
I know exactly what you'd do
With all the dreams we had

Just blood runs thicker oh
We're thick as thieves, you know
If that's important to you
It's important to me
I tried to make you see
But you don't wanna know
You don't want to know!
If you pipe all summer long
Then get forgiven in a song
Well that's a touch, my lad
They sold the rights to all the wrongs
And when they knew you'd give me songs
Welcome back, I said

But blood runs thicker oh
We're thick as thieves, you know
If that's important to you
It's important to me
I tried to make you see
But you don't wanna know
You don't want to know!

What became of the likely lads?
What became of the dreams we had?
What became of forever?
What became of forever though?
We'll never know

Please don't get me wrong
See I forgive you in a song
We call "The Likely Lads"
We all bought the ones
We taught 'em all we wrote the songs
That's filled with dreams we have

But blood runs thicker oh
We're thick as thieves, you know
If that's important to you
It's important to me
I tried to make you see
But you don't wanna know
You don't want to know!
Oh what became of the likely lads?
What became of the dreams we had?
Oh what became of forever?
Oh what became of forever?
We'll never know
