Recently grabbed a new one, and... I'm kind of surprised by how far these have come. They look and feel great, like premium electronics, and don't intrude on reading. The lighting can be adjusted to a really natural feel. They finally seem to be moving to bigger, more book-like screens. The screens themselves look almost exactly like the real thing.

I've been dabbling for a while, but this is the first time where I've felt like I could all-the-way switch from staring at dead wood and hallucinating, to staring at a screen and doing it.

I'm kind of curious what Gaf thinks. Have you been able to make that transition? Will they pry the papyrus out of your cold, dead hands? Censorship concerns? Any favored devices (I'm a bit ignorant to what's out there) or accessory suggestions?

I'm still rocking the Kindle I bought in 2011 or 2012. I really like mine and it was useful for travelling, but I still prefer actual books over it. Although when everything was shut down I used my Kindle a lot since I couldn't get to the library.

Until mine stops working I don't see much of a point in upgrading.

I'll admit, I'm curious.

I love reading but maaaan do I no longer want to lug around these physical copies of books every time I move, or have to find a place to store them.

Like how many times do I revisit most books? Never?

God, it just feels so dirty to me. Like, I read to escape screens. Idk.

I'm scurred.

I hate my Kindle. Nice little device and I always want to use it, but the experience sucks every time I do. Prices aren't cheap enough imo for what I'm giving up. It's such a pain in the ass to look back through an ebook, like if you want to reference something you just read a few pages back, hope you made a bookmark (you didn't). I'm always accidentally moving forward or backward pages, I don't really love the formatting options, can't write in the margins, the list goes on and on. The only benefit for me is that you can carry a lot of books on one device, but I don't really take advantage of that benefit. Gimme paper.

I'm a big fan and I'm still rocking my Kindle 3 with a keyboard.

Being able to hold one and turn pages with a single is amazing. You can stir that boiling Ramen and keep reading with no problems.

The Calibre Ebook Management program is amazing if you have Windows.

And you can also find copies of books you own already easily as well. :messenger_winking_tongue:

This is probably one of the coolest parts of E-Readers. It's literally the only media device that will last you for years and and years, still play all the latest content, and so a fantastic job.

A lot of things have happened, like sharper e-ink, and most posted in the OP, but I bet a 2011 still holds up.

I'll admit, I'm curious.

Lol. I do feel it's different here, because it's e-ink, premium ones are side-lit and can alter warmth and brightness for a decisive not-screen feel, and you will never, ever get a notification.

They're really great for distraction-free reading, and without feeling like you're staring at yet another identical screen all day.

I had one once, then I placed a heavy bag on it and it was busted.
Won't happen with real books.

I'm growing less and less fond of electronic devices. DRM and such.. reliance on electricity.

A normal book is far superior for reading imho. Also it's perfect for lending out books.

I tried so hard. I can't read for more than an hour before I have to put the ipad down. There's something about reading a book on a tablet that bothers me. Whether my wrist starts to hurt from holding the thing to my eyes get watery and unable to focus. It's fine if I do like 5 minute chunks, but that breaks the dive that I like to compared with books.

Not remotely like an E-Reader, thankfully. It's my least favored reading experience, when I pick up a phone at work lunch break or something. Phones and tablets just weren't meant for this.

readers win the war when you wanna look up a part of speech or dictionary unknown words, highlight material, take notes, whatever

i ruined one of my feynman lecture books w / various highlights and scribbled notes

The highlight-word-for-definition thing is absolutely killer for expanding your volcabulary, or if you're reading something that just goes a bit too antiquated English to be comprehensible.

Cant stand it. I prefer the smell and the feel of a real book.

I can read a whole book in one day but cant do that with digital readers.

I have a Kindle paperwhite, it's alright.
I'm really waiting for decent color E-Reader to upgrade but so far nothing yet.

It's getting there.

So right now i switched to audiobooks.
They are getting better and better and are so convenient they've become the main way i "read" books now.

Still can't beat the E-readers for the battery life, weight and amount of books you can put in there.
Mine has 300+, mostly classics i'll read one day :D, or so i tell myself.

I actually had no idea color e-ink screens were a thing. That doesn't have a whole lot of benefit to me as a book reader (I've tried to move past the ones with pictures :messenger_tears_of_joy: ), but something like that could seriously be awesome for comics or something.

I read books exclusively on my s10+ now. Have been for awhile. I just find the convenience of having books on the same device I do basically everything else on to be fantastic. To me a kindle would be no different than having a book. Just one more thing to lug around.

Yeah i'm a big fan of Franco-Belgian comics but it's really hard to justify a collection when we are talking about literal hundreds of kilos of books. :messenger_neutral:
I had to help to move a friend of mine collection and it almost killed me :messenger_astonished:

The Color ebook have been worked on for a really long time as they have the same battery life but they are in colors, right now the only option is Ipad/tablet but it really hard to read on and kill your eyes pretty fast for long reading sessions.

This is mine, btw. Sharing that would probably work better in a thread that wasn't 90% paper advocates, but you work with what you have. :messenger_tears_of_joy: (Really cool convo, too)

It's probably not long before I go full Gollum over it. Hoping to get a nice leather cover for it as well.

I may despise 2020 cuturally, but if the tech isn't completely awesome.

Wtf is e ink?

I wouldn't know the technical details, but it's an entirely different kind of screen that perfectly mimics actual ink (it may be actual ink, I don't know) and paper. Completely legible and readable in sunlight alone, looks like a printed page, etc.

The downside is that it refreshes much slower than conventional screen technologies. It's perfect for a book, but not so much for, like, internet browsing or something.

I have the latest version of the Kindle oasis. I had to adapt from the previous oasis as its bigger but I will never go back to physical books except for school text and reference materials. I cannot imagine not having my kindle everywhere I go and the physical buttons are brilliant.

Welcome to that baller hundreds of books on you at once life.

guess not.

Being the excellent poster that I am, I still have you covered. Did an e-Reader post over in gaming at the same time. :messenger_sunglasses:

I do like the bigger size better, but I actually hung onto my old Oasis for that reason. It's got a really nifty diminutive/portable/cute feel to it.

I've always used the Kindle app, works the same, have all my books on all me devices and I don't have to manage another device just for reading Ebooks. As soon as I got the app the amount of books I read was amazing for someone who'd not really read a book, just magazine and newspapers for years. It was a lot more satisfying to read rather than just browse the internet on my commute.

Yeah, the Kindle phone app is awesome. Once the wife stopped me leaving my bedside light on it mean't I could still read in bed. (Well, read the same sentence 15 times as you enter the sleep zone).

You're 100% right about it being more satisfying. Instead of reading about the way the sound chip inside an NES worked a book let's you live another life. (Cheesy I know)

The Kindle app also still syncs how far I've read with my Kindle keyboard. Which is nice.

Been using 7" Kindle Fires for years. The beige page color makes reading books comfortable for long sessions. And I really like the feature to enlage and scroll through comic panels. I want to get a bigger one to so you don't need to zoom in.

I use a Kindle Paperwhite, whatever the model was from 2017. After switching to it I now exclusively buy books on it. Super convenient: I use Goodreads to find new books, buy them on Amazon, have them instantly delivered. It's fine out in the sun or in a dark room thanks to the back lighting. The battery does last a long time, but not as long as advertised in-use.

I love my first gen Kindle Paperwhite.
Being able to take multiple books with me on a small device with great battery life is awesome and I find the experience of reading on devices with E-ink to be very similar to actual books. Not to mention that the backlight is very useful.

Also it's amazing if you like reading books in other languages. If a book was originally written in English I always try to read the original version, but around here the selection of physical english books you can find is very limited and VERY overpriced, and the only alternative is to buy them from abroad where you end up paying more for shipping than for the actual book. So being able to buy digital books for good prices without having to pay any shipping is amazing.

I do agree though that looking back through the book can be annoying. Like you want to re-read a certain part or quickly check something from a few chapters back and that's when you start to miss physical books. But it's a downside I'm willing to accept.

The built-in dictionary/wikipedia lookup tools, and highlighting to save passages, is great too.

I have a Kindle, but I barely use it. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer reading a physical book. I also have a very impressive personal library chock full of fiction and nonfiction.

I use a phone or laptop to read really.

I read books the old fashioned way.

Beware if yoy read any Jasper Fforde Books though. According to one of his books, people can remember stories via a Barcode on a shelf. It is the future!!!

I've actually considered buying an e-reader but I never actually take the plunge. I have plenty of ebooks in PDF/EPUB format, does the dictionary work with those? And where do you guys get your ebooks?

Killed my 2nd gen Kindle by accident, now back to using the 1st gen one, no lighting ofc sadly, that would be the next step for me.
I use both eReader and paper still, much of the stuff I am reading is not readily available on Kindle.
