Fios just became available in my area... and the $49.95 for Up to 15 Mbps/2 Mbps is very tempting.... any comments?

that's a fantastic fucknig deal.

I'm pissed because when we moved Verizon told us we'd be able to get DSL here. Upon moving, they told usit wasn't possible because we were too far awau.

Now I'm on Adelphia Hi Speed Premiere or whatever it's called.

edit: Fios would be much nicer with a 3Mbbs upload speed

Oh you motherfucker I hate you. I've been waiting for this to roll around in Houston. As it stands...i don't even think Verizon offers ANY broadband in my area, much less FIOS.

Did I mention I hate you?

(btw, get it, or then I'll hate you EVEN MORE)

WTF, I'm barely getting 384kbps upload and you're complaining about FIOS' 2Mbps up? PFTH!

I could triple my download (probably impossible to fully take advantage of at the moment), as well as increase my upload by over 5x!

Skype with no lag ftw!

I will be jumping on the FIOS bandwagon for everything when it's available in my area, including the TV service (which has more HD channels than anyone else). A lot of towns in MA have it already, but I live in Boston which will obviously be tough to cover with fiber and will probably have to wait a while..

I'm not complaining, I'm saying it would look much nicer with 3 Mbps upload. I'm on a max 6 Mbps/768 Kbps plan now. The difference in speed between the down/up ratio with Verizon would be much more apparant than it is on my Adelphia plan.

hehehe I already called the missus... she said she doesn't care what I do as long as she has an internet connection that's faster than our old piece of shit 1.5mbps DSL connection(right now I'm taking advantage of Comcasts $29.99) special I'll be scheduling the Fios install shortly. I'm definitely going to do the $49.99 tier.

Yup..15mpbs/2mbps here :) Some of my neighbors have it as well. Its really awesome, and I will be ready for the AOE3 demo XD

I had it installed early last month

Pros

-Installation was free
-Free four port router
-It actually costs a few dollars less per month than I was paying Comcast because I have verizon for phone service (so it's $39.99 for the FIOS subscription)
-It's fast[

Cons

-Installation takes about five hours

Woohoo installation is set up for next Thursday. Mooreberg she mentioned that the install was 4 hours... what the hell do they do?

They'll hook up a large box to the side of your house, run a fiber obtic cable from the phone pole, pretty much wire any room where you have a computer. After that is smooth sailing but have some coffee ready if they show up early.

Hmm well he'll be done a bit quicker then becuase he won't have to touch any PC in the house (all wireless), I'll have him set up the box and then I'll verify on the main wired computer while he's there that the service is up and running... I'll probably leave the comcast cable service up for a few days, just in case.

Sweeeet.

whats the site so I can look and see if I can get this service?

Or specifically Here

I may have to investigate their VOIP service a few months from now....

Dammint Darien, Which part of MD do you live in? I'm up in Germantown and they finished running the fiber in the neighborhood 2 months ago and sent me a thing saying it'd be ready as soon as they "Upgraded switching Equipment".

Longest ass upgrade I've ever waited for :(

Same here it was only about 2 months ago... I'm in Germantown right off of Clopper Rd & Steeple Rd, Manchester Farms I think is the name of our area.

Just to let you guys know, if you are a current Verizon DSL customer and subscribe for the 5down/2up service, then its $29.99 for 1 year.

And Mooreberg, I think your 39.99 will last for one year. But since you are a Verizon phone customer, you will get 44.99 instead of the usual 49.99.

Argh the bastards... I'm like directly west (270 and 118).

Looks like I get to check the website every day for the next month :P

They have to run CAT5 from the ONT outside to where ever in your house you want the router?

Hmmm that might present a problem, I certainly don't want a cable running from my office upstairs all the way downstairs... I saw something on Verizon's website in small print that they charge $75 for cable drops... wtf.... I may have to feign ignorance on this one when the installer comes and see what happens....

How is FIOS NOT available in Manhattan? Assholes.
It's more difficult to lay fiber in a big city. Most places that have it so far are smaller/suburban towns. Also, they're really only marketing FIOS to private, residential homes for right now. Verizon literally has no plan for apartment buildings and such at this point. Which make up the majority of cities like Manhattan. See where I'm going? It's gonna be at least another few years. When it comes to things like this, more populated/bigger cities aren't always the early adopter.

Yeah I heard Fios is really aimed at us upper crusty suburban snobs... ;) OMG evil suburbanities strike again! DAMN THEM! DAMN..... THEM!

But the people living in big cities are far more likely, and in greater numbers, to adopt FIOS right away...

actually they aren't. you're on crack goodcow. most people that live in the city are not ridiculously cheap hermits.

But you have to balance that with the fact that it's easier to lay fiber optic in suburban neighborhoods, and that this fiber optic is eventually also going to be used to push televisions services to compete with cable and sat.. and more sat users are out there in the suburbs, I've even seen it theorized that higher household incomes of suburbanites are taken in to account... but I'm not sure I go along THAT far...

It's available 30 miles south of me in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Only problem is that I live further north, in Litchfield County *cries*

Verizon doesn't cover contracts in my area :-(

I doubt FIOS will ever reach me because of fucking Charter.

Crap. Crappity crap crap crap!

I JUST bought a linksys wireless cable gateway (cable modem and router in one) because I thought it would be a long time before fios came to my area but I live within 60 miles from Darien so it will probably be here within a year.

Does anyone know if you can use a gateway as a router only? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question but I'm not sure how it all works. I want to be able to use the router part of it for my home network for when fios becomes available but if you can't use the router without the cable connection going directly into the box then I will need to separate the two and purchase the cable modem and router separately.

:lol

have you noticed that pretty much every place it's available is a suburb of a major city? (I know it's available around DC, Boston, and a bunch of other big cities too), but not in the cities themselves. It's annoying, isn't it?

FIOS sounds really nice on paper, but it seems to be only marginally better than my current provider, Cablevision. With Optimum Online I get 10Mbps/1Mbps, and with their promotion, I pay only $29.99 a month, and then about $40 or $45 later. FIOS is fast, but I here Cablevision is already planning on upping our speed as well. In Long Island (I'm in the Bronx), they're testing their new speeds which are said to equal or exceed 20Mbps/5Mbps. since Cablevision is based in LI, I would expect them to handle that area (suburban) first, and then upgrade their customers in the city. Unfortunately for people like Goodcow, Optimum Online is only availible to less than half of the customers in the city, as they only cover half of Brooklyn, and the Bronx out of NYC's 5 boroughs. For Mannyhanny and Queens you're stuck with Time Warner and Road Runner. With that said, although I'm extremely pleased with the high bandwidth of my connection, you're still limited by the rest of the internet, as most websites will never let you download at speeds anywhere near your theoretical max.

Which is why I asked if it was even practical to use the 30 Mbps / 5Mbps connection in a home.

yeah, cablevision is testing 20/2, one of my friends got onto the beta test... damn suburbanites*(!&

i wish i could actually get the full 10mbit, it seems to be getting slower and slower... i started at 8mbit 2 years ago and now it's down to ~6

Anyone know Canada's situation? I haven't really heard of anything faster than ADSL, except for Shaw's highspeed, but I forget how fast that is, certainly not 15 Mbps! And whatever happened to VDSL?
