Any Word on Enhanced BC for any System?

Has there been any news about any of the next gen systems offering enhancements to older titles? I know as soon as they start doing that, they're going to run into bugs, but it would nice to have the option.

i'd assume that xbox360 games will be whatever res you set it at considering microsoft kept emphasising 720p, 16:9

I'm hoping PS3 adds something. PS1 games already look pretty bad on just S-Video in their original resolutions, I simply can't imagine what they'll look like on higher end TVs.

The Xbox 360 BC will be enhanced by not being able to play the crappy games!

And regarding the PS3, how will BC be done? By emulation? That's risky business, but it's doable.

That would sure be nice... One of the reasons I nabbed a PS2 was because I was excited to play the older PSX games with a bump up in graphics.. at least add some filtering on there! Boy was I dissapointed to find that they looked identical to my PSX.

So now I have all of these PSX games, and a PS2 that can play them, but I still use ePSXe on my PC instead, since I can at least make the older games look tolerable :) It would be nice if PS3 woud bump up the resolution a bit. PS2 games looks LOADS better played in a higher res.. it makes a world of difference.

yeah I very much hope PS3 really enhances the image quality of PS2 games.

I want my PS2 Ace Combat 5 to look like this on PS3

It will almost certainly have the PS2 chip set in there somewhere.

I think people would really see certain PS2 games in particular in a whole new light with a fwe enhancements.

Though even beyond the graphics boost, it would be great if they could emulate multiplayer modes through their repsective online connections.

How hard would it be for PS3 to apply anti-aliasing to PS2 games?

Or provide a quality line doubler to produce a cleaner picture for PS1/PS2 stuff on an HDTV?

Any clue as to how the PS3 is handling BC?

Emulation or are they including the 2 chipsets (PS1/PS2)?

From everything thats been said, most are estimating PS1 emulation, PS2 chipset.
It should be a walk in the park for the PS3 to emulate the PS1.
And since its being emulated, it would not surprise me if there are additional graphically enhancements.

Now depending on how PS2 is done on the PS3, it might be easy or it might not to give the games AA. But I don't expect it.

Hopefully the NES/SNES/N64 emus in Revolution have some nifty options. Save states would be fantastic!

I hope SNES games get a bump in resolution with high res sprites. SMW2 killer app.

Oh god. Those are just AC5 hi-res promo shots. Think about what a fully-nextgen AC6 would like look.

:D
Who needs Ace Combat when we got WARHAWK! Seriously Warhawk I on PSX kicks AC series ass, Warhawk PS3 is going to be amazing.

i think optional FSAA shouldnt be to hard to make... and would be awesome!

ehh....

if you were talking warhawk vs. air combat, maybe.

warhawk vs. Ace Combat 2, hell no.

warhawk vs. Ace Combat 3, probably

warhawk vs. Ace Combat 4, fuck no

warhawk vs. Ace Combat 4, fuck no

PS2 games could likely be enhanced with better image quality, but I'm not so sure there is much else that could be done with PSX titles.

haha Ace Combat 3 Japanese version was really awesome. I am huge AC fan and I can't wait for AC PS3, but Warkhawk is an awesome game. I think it will be better than AC Next on PS3 (see teaser trailer). But anyway let's wait and see what Namco comes up with.

AC3j was awesome, but it's fairly hard to track down these days. If any of our nihon-based brothers could help me out, i'd appreciate it.

edit: nevermind, found it.

As long as the systems offer near 100% BC I'm happy. Not at all happy with what's going on with X360, lets hope that the BC for games are implemented quickly rather than drag on for years.

Expecting them to completely redo the graphics of old games in high resolution and still sell for a cheap price is a bit crazy.

At best we should expect the sort of enhancements PC emulators allow, though I doubt they'd bother with all of them. I enjoy doing high resolution Mode 7 in ZSNES, for instance.

PS2 adds texture filtering and faster loading to PS1 games.

I was under the impression that CELL would be emulating both PS1 and PS2.

Regardless of how it is done, I'm interested to know if the better video output hardware alone will make a difference to how PS2 games look?

My blocky-ass-hell nasty-ass-looking Chrono Cross on my PS2 sure looked the same as on my PSX. Looked MUCh better on ePSXe. Not that I really care about the loading speed, but the emu does that a lot better to ;)

To be honest, I don't give a damn really about graphical enhancements. What I *would* like to see is the PS3 self-transferring the disc image to a PS3 HDD and running it from there.

Essentially, give us HDloader. I don't care much about still needing the disc in the drive.

Only if you set it up in the system options (and I think you have to do this each time--and it breaks some games).

Yeah, that's one of the thing that annoys me about PS2's setup. I pretty much want those features on all the time, but it's a minor pain to make the switches every single time, or get to the game and realize I forgot to.

As I remember, you don't have to switch it on every time, so long as you're always leaving the PS2 on or in sleep mode. The changes aren't saved to memory, so they don't stick on flipping the power switch.

When it was first demonstrated, they used MGS1 and while you could see a bit of smoothing and whatnot, it really didn't do much.

For PS3, straight emulation or I/O chip stuff is fine, but I'd like to see better loadtimes if possible.

you wouldnt be able to see the difference in screenshots. ingame, its a minor change, but its there.

Vagrant Story and Front Mission 3 showed some pretty obvious differences with filtering on. Not entirely convinced they are *better* but it certainly cleans up the pixel trash.

You're aware that filtering/faster loading is disabled by default, and it needs to be enabled every time you start your PS2, right?

Filtering can make a big difference, Vagrant Story looks great on PS2.

What's the difference in the Japanese version? Or was there just never a US version released?

I'm pretty sure leaving it in sleep mode doesn't retain the PS1 settings. I remember testing that at one point thinking perhaps it would give me a viable reason to leave it halfway on, but it didn't seem to work.

They cut all of the anime-ish story sequences out of the US release, along with nearly half the missions. The japanese version is nearly twice as long.

Wow, that... seriously sucks. At least Namco isn't as bad about things like that now.

Does the Japanese release have any English text/subtitles? It probably doesn't, but just thought I'd ask.

I'm not really sure. I don't own a copy yet.

please don't bid on the one on ebay right now.

Well, just for you I put Chrono Cross back in my PS2, made sure that option was on, and loaded it up. It was so ugly and slow, that I wept.

I hope your happy.

:D

The thing that sucked about the texture filtering was that for some things, like spirte backgrounds, it would leave a big ugly black box around the object that stuck out like a sore thumb. I remember Tekken 3 was a bad culprit for that, King's level was the worst. I remember it did work very well on Smackdown 2 though, like it made a pretty noticeable difference.

Just tested it; you're right. Weird.

Yea it highlights sprites set in a 3-d plane with transparency, I hardly ever use the enhancements.

Well, the reason for that is because the faster loading option would actually break some games, they either wouldn't start or would only load part way and stop. So Sony didn't want tons of people to leave the option on and forget about it and then have the next game they pop in not work and thereby make it seem like the system wasn't compatible. They probably imagined getting tons of customer service calls. But I bet they got a bunch anyway, from people wondering why they couldn't save the options as always on. Again, the smart people have to suffer for the stupid ones.
