Just wondering if anybody could make any suggestions.

I've been looking at the IBM ViaVoice and Dragon programs and the reviews seemed to be mixed, at best. Some say it works wonders, others say it sucks.

I'm just looking for something that I could use to write letters and papers in Word without actually typing.

What language will you speak in when writing the letters?

Also ViaVoice is OK I guess but has some annoying tendancies. I haven't found anything that works greater than 50-60% for me yet tho.

I'd be talking English.

It is actually for my grandma - she had a stroke, so she can't write or type. I told her I would check some speech recognition programs out for her.

Did the stroke effect her speach? If she slurs then more than likely voice recognition will not work. Like someone said before it only works 50 to 60% of the time with someone who speacks perfectly.

Her speech is perfect and she talks pretty loudly, so I don't think that will be any bother.

This 50-60% thing has me bothered, though. I guess I'll just try one out and hope I can return it if it craps out.

i tried the professional version of Dragon Naturally Speaking a few years back. i'd say it was about 70% accurate out of the box, and got better over time as i used it more and it got used to my voice. i only used it for a couple of weeks before getting tired of training the software. Definitely not for those who lack patience, but i could see it becoming very useful given the time needed for it to become proficient in speech translation.
