Anybody here fix their own controllers?

Both my GC controllers have had this problem for awhile, I've tried to fix the problem in the past, though I didn't really know what I was doing, and I want to know if anyone has successfully repaired their controllers before I go out and buy some new ones.

The problem with my Gamecube controllers is that the joy stick permanently tilts forward. If I dangle my controller, the stick will fall forward. This makes it impossible for me to run properly in certain games (i.e. Mario, Zelda), when I push the stick as far as it will go, my characters will only walk. It takes quite a bit of maneuvering to get them to run.

This is obviously a huge pain in the ass, and short of fudging with my controller during the bootup (holding it back a bit so that I change the neutral setting, though that messes up when I try to run backwards in games), is there any other fix, or will I have to shell out?

It sounds like the spring is worn out in your controller.

When a console boots, it takes the state of the joystick as its zero point. If its off center, the zero point will be bogus. Time to buy a new controller I believe.

Like the Raimi avatar btw. He's one of my fav directors ;)

I've that problem with one of my controllers (stick permanently tilts forward)... I'll try to fix it this weekend.

Last week I repaired one of my old controllers, the stick was so lose that you could barely walk forward. I opened the controller and used some glue...

Ha!! And the guys in the chat were chastising ME saying I don't treat my controllers right. This is a double whammy to cause my controllers with problems are also Cube ones an guess what? Two of them got worn out!

Like I said all along~ Nintendo + Analog Stick = Suck! Eat that GAF irc!

*cough*

On a more productive note what is a good way to clean controllers?

I've operated on my controllers before, but I don't think I used that method. I remember doing something involved with pins and whatnot. I'll try your method later if I have the time, thanks for the diagram :)

Same thing happened to my GC controller, except not to the point that you mention. The analog stick has gotten really loose to the point that if you shake the controller, the stick flops quite a bit and you can see the character in the game move. I still have an extra controller that I got as a gift years ago and never used so it's not that big of a deal.

You really don't have anything to lose. If you fuck up, oh well - they were messed up to begin with.

My sentiment exactly.

I've had a Z-Button get messed up on a third party (pelican maybe?) controller but that's just expected. (Note the controller was boughten for me, 3rd party controllers don't make their way into my purchases.)

When I younger my dog chewed through my N64 controller cord. I got to learn how to use a soldering iron :)

A dog chewed the control stick of my Spice controller my friend gave me, so I took apart a third party Spiderman Naki pad and switched the joysticks, and it worked well at first. But during a RE4 game, a Regenerator grabbed me, and I flipped the stick too hard, and the "cap" of the joystick came off. :lol
