Anybody here watching the Fifa World Cup Club Cup?

I didn't know this was happening, but I'm pulling for Germany.

I get that the tournament was intended to introduce proper football to the handegg people, but it's always nice to see latam stomp on the supposed euro football superiority.

Feel free to join us -

It's covered in our 24/25 season thread.

No.

Pointless tournament. Not to mention corrupt as fuck. DAZN paid 1bn for the streaming rights. Then the Saudi state invested 1bn into DAZN, after which, Saudi Arabia were gifted the 2034 world cup. Wow. That's not suspect at all.

Also the team selection is bizarre. Chelsea are in, but English champions Liverpool aren't? No Napoli? No Barcelona?

If it was being played in my garden I'd draw the curtains.

It's some weird system that's based over a team's performance over the past few years. There's an explanation here.

Chelsea won the 2021 Champions League and that got them in since that was during the period for it. You can only get two teams per country so Chelsea and City got in for their Champions League wins which means Liverpool don't get in.

They also bent over backwards to have Inter Miami take part because they really wanted Messi to be there.

It being this convoluted is another reason it's hard to care.

Not really. It coming so soon after the regular season finished just feels like kind of a pointless add on.
Regular euro season. Latam teams seasons ends just before the end of the year. That was a major point for some teams in the previous format.

For example, the Brazilian championship is way bigger than most of the europe countries leagues, our teams plays about 80 games during the season and were always commuting greater distances to cover the entire country (and also the continental tournament, the south american cup). So it was natural that our teams were depleted and at huge disadvantage when competing with euro teams.

Now, the calendar flipped and euro teams are treating the championship as a not so important thing as it isn't based on theirs calendar. Well, fuck them.

It is a fuck fest in order to get saudi money and to try (one more time) to introduce football into USA? Yep, but it still is an official competition into the calendar. I'm watching it and it's being fun seeing the almighty euro champions being smashed by some teams that I watch play on my garden. Let's just see if it will be like that until the end of the championship, lol.

The previous format of the Club World Cup? I don't think European fans generally cared about that either.

I feel like the teams are treating it as more important than they did in the past because there's a shit load of money at stake this time. But I don't think fans are all that bothered. You can see from the Football community thread that there's not been much discussion about it. And people I know in person aren't talking about it either.

Yep, I agree. But there's a general disdain by the team themselves regarding the competition, what turned the audience away.

That's the problem, it's an official competition on the calendar and it's being generally good, aside from the unusual place. Teams will play it once every four years and once the UEFA teams treat it more seriously (aside from the money aspect), people will notice it more.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world.
Why aren't more people here excited for this ?

⚽
Because there were no qualifiers. FIFA decided to deliver some money to a few selected clubs.
This is not fair.
There are two portuguese clubs in there. More money for those 2 that are already in the top in portugal.
Football has taken another turn for the worse.

So there's massive corruption in footy?

Watching Fluminense X Ulsan right now. Great game, Ulsan's defense is crowded and Fluminense is having a tough time scoring.

Fluminense 4 X Hyundai Ulsan 2

t
errific game! Congrats to Ulsan, who fought till the last second, didn't surrendered. Too bad it's out of the Cup.

No, glad Liverpool are not in it, they complain of being tired during the season due to too many games and then play this new tournament in the summer WTF!

Why watch the world cup when you can watch the world burn? It's more entertaining.

21st century Peace Summit cookout:

Iran:
"Y'all fake. I get hit with drones like it's Amazon Prime, then y'all be like 'let's deescalate.' FOH. You want peace? Stop invading my airspace like it's a group chat."

U.S.A.: "Group chat?! Bruh, you got Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, Shi'a militias in Iraq, you are the group chat. You don't want peace, you just mad you ain't admin!"

Iran: "Aight, but you the same dude who be fightin' wars on credit. Got 31 trillion in debt and still actin' like the neighborhood cop. Bitch you ain't Batman, go sit yo ass down."

U.S.A.: "At least we show up. You be sneak dissin' with enrichment programs and acting surprised when the block get hot."

China (eating honey): "Funny hearing 'block get hot' from the country that lit every block since Hiroshima. Wit yo Marvel villain head ass."

U.S.A.: "China. :rolleyes:Go back to pirating our tech and pretendin' your economy not in shambles. Your property market collapsed like your credibility."

China: "You say that while I'm holdin' all these U.S. bonds like I'm your baby mama with receipts. Keep playin', I'll call in the debt and make your dollar do the Harlem Shake."

Russia: "Debt? Man, y'all beefin' with wallets. I'm beefin' with NATO on God Mode. I took Crimea with a ski mask on."

Iran: "You also took Ls in Ukraine like it was sponsored by Adidas. You sent a million troops to do what? Get clapped by tractors?"

Russia: "Least I got boots on the ground. Unlike Israel who got soldiers takin' selfies in Gaza then cryin' about bad PR."

Israel: "Y'all mad 'cause I defend myself! I don't start nothin'. I just finish what terrorists begin."

Saudi Arabia: "Finish? Bruh, you been 'finishing' Palestine since the '40s and it's still goin'. You like a reboot of the same bad movie: Occupation 7: This Time It's a broken record."

Palestine: "Y'all arguein' like y'all care. But let's be real, Saudi sent us prayers, not aid. Iran sent us rockets, not results. And Egypt? Locked the gates like we grounded."

Egypt: "Don't come for me bruh. I gave y'all Rafah. What more you want, my mama's Wi-Fi?"

Jordan: "Ayo, if we all shut up for a second, maybe we can have a peace process.."

!!Everyone!!: "Jordan, shut yo' neutral, can't-pick-a-side, hosting-everybody's army ass up!"

Yemen: "Look at all y'all tryna flex. Meanwhile I'm fightin' Saudis with duct tape."

Saudi Arabia: "And I'm fightin' you while buying yachts and wives in bulk. Don't get it twisted, I fund both the war and the afterparty."

Russia: "Bruh got Gucci airstrikes but can't handle a wedding procession without casualties."

Syria: "All y'all forgot me, huh? Still got 5 countries beefin' in my house like it's a Jordan Peele movie."

Turkey: "Nigga you da Airbnb of war! We come in, bomb a little & dip. Even the Kurds got keys."

World Bank: (walks in late): "Yo, y'all need peace, for real. Investors getting spooked."

Iran: "You mean the same investors who fund both sides? Bro, you the reason this beef has sequels."

Random Kid (eating shawarma): "Didn't they say this was a peace conference?"

Old head in a kufi: "It is, lil bro. In the Middle East, peace starts with a roast."

European here. Dont really care for it nor do i know anyone who does. I did watch my teams first game. It was as whatever as whatever could be. There was no excitement, it just felt like watching a friendly game with no stakes.

Dont even get me started on ref body cams and announcing what happened to the audience in the stadium.

I thought the club world club was the winners of the respective champions League etc all play each other.

Turns out this is European teams playing USA teams? This is nothing but pre season friendlies for the European teams then. Saw some highlights in a bar.

It's clubs from every continent playing each other. There's been a version of this kind of competition for years but this year FIFA has pumped a bunch more money into it and expanded the format since they really want it to be a bigger thing and to have their own Champions League type competition they can cash in on.

There is quite a bit of money at stake. So the European teams probably do care about this much more than they had about the previous format. As an example, Real Madrid paid £10 million to get Trent Alexander-Arnold early so he could take part in this for them when they were going to get him on a free shortly after the competition finished. But the European season did also just finished so the players are probably mentally and physically drained at this point.

Been watching some of the matches.....some have been hit and miss. One person I spoke to about it called this 'glorified friendlies' and reckons that PSG will win it just to boast that they won the lot (I know PSG has a young squad and won the UCL). Hopefully, the knockout stages will be exciting.....touchwood!

What a match. As an AlHilal fan I'm shocked, impressed, confused and happy. No one and I repeat no one expected AlHilal to win. Man City's squad market value is ten times AlHilal's which just goes to show that you can't buy wins.

I saw the US win with Penalties over Costa Rica on Sunday in the CONCAF I think. That was a good match. I saw CAN get knocked out the same day. But I don't think these are the same thing as the Club Cup.

The US is painfully terrible. Costa Rica is also really bad, like ranked #50 😭
