NHL Stanley Cup playoffs

It's amazing how far Oilers go on two guys. Their roster stats are misleading because you got guys like Hopkins, Hyman, Bouchard and even Kane (in his injury plagued seasons) who get pts too. But their pts heavily depends on McDavid and Draisaitl doing the heavy lifting and those other guys leach off them. When the 2 star players go cold, so does the rest of the team. Florida is different as they got 3 solid lines. The Marchand line carried some wins alone when the other 2 lines were cold. You'd never get that in a million years on Oilers. Nobody except Oilers fans even knows whos on their third line. I heard Florida set an NHL record with 6 guys with 20+ pts.

If they just got some better defence and goaltending they would had already won a cup or two already. Their bottom 6 forwards and bottom 3-4 dmen are so invisible, you could literally just replace them with league minimum call ups and funnel $10M of savings to finding a stud goalie or dman and it would make a huge difference.
That was my thought too, but i'll admit i'm not to savvy on hockey. Marchand's line was fire, they were relentless and dangerous as hell.

The third line of Marchand, Lundell and Luostarinen doing that good is 100% abnormal. The line put up solid second line kind of pts. On weak scoring teams, they put up top line pts. In the regular season, they were not this good.

But it shows how solid the team is built and as everyone knows in hockey some players are better built for the playoffs (stamina and grit to grind out 7 game series over and over again) than regular season matches which are one off games where half the teams are crap. Talented floater dudes do well in reg season. When playoffs comes and all teams making it are decent or elite and the players go balls out trying to win and crush guys into the boards that's when the players who play a non-physical game often get neutralized (guys who dont like getting hit or stand in front of the net getting checked, wimpy pass focused players etc...)

Talented teams like Oilers rely on PP to gets goals too. When the PP opportunities dry up (like yesterday with no penalties which is rare), so does their scoring as their even strength scoring may be nothing special. Florida can dominate at even strength or PP.

Marchand is still a good player. He's old, but having him on a third line adds a lot since third line checking players dont have guys like Marchand who can do a bit of everything. On other teams, he'd probably be a solid second line player. Maybe even still top line on shit teams. But on Florida they put him on third line.

Agree heavily with the last few posts.

McDavid and Dri were literally inconsequential to the final. Couldn't do a thing. Kane was first in the box of nearly every single game. Nug can't carry a team. The Oilers d is a joke defensively but they can get away with it when they are score but that totally dried up. Perry is 40 and was the best oiler on the ice, followed by Wallman. That makes no sense.

The Oilers were never really in the series. They led for a total of 33 minutes the whole series while Florida had almost 300 minutes by the end of the series. Florida scored at least 2 times in the first period of each game and 5 out of 6 games they scored first and usually in the first 3 minutes.

Panthers should had won in 5 too. Outplayed Oilers in game 4, but they got that lucky OT goal off Mikkola's leg.

Very true, when you look at them they have so many guys that came through. Impressive team and i must say i dislike some of their antics when it comes to shady stuff, which they didn't do, especially these last two games.

I mean, Bennett, Reinhart, Marchand, Tkachuk, Barkov (what a beast of a player), Bobrovsky, they all showed up to play, even if they were a bit down on one or two games.

Florida is a team of players (with will and skill). Edmonton is two dudes with a bunch of bums that pad out the roster. They don't have a great defensive system, they don't have great goaltending, and their special teams were way worse than last year's. The fact that they got through the West just shows that the West isn't some juggernaut conference as people thought. People will bring up the Hyman injury, but they didn't win with him in the lineup last year either. They need an actual goaltender that can give them some confidence in the crease. Skinner is a good dude and all. But, come on. You have to be a bit more ruthless if you're going to be chasing a championship. Especially after losing in the final the previous year.

Crazy how close the Leafs got to eliminating them. If it wasn't for their own ghosts and shitty play, who knows what would've happened? At the end of the day, Florida handled them when they needed to.

yep, even a sweep wouldn't have surprised me in hindsight.

Think about it this way. Toronto push Florida to 7 games

Toronto pushing the Panthers to game 7 was merely for comedic effect.

I was rooting for Edmonton (because hockey in Florida is a crime) until some Canadians started saying some anti- American shit.

Get fucked maple losers, 1993 is undefeated.

The streak continues. Since there are more American based teams, it makes sense statistically they'd win more often, but no Canadian based teams winning the cup in over 30 years but with plenty making the finals is impressive.

Do you really think that started in Canada? Truthfully. I was at the watch party in Edmonton last night and we were singing the American anthem almost as loud as our own.

Either way, Canada always wins the cup anyways. Over 50% of the league is from the land of snow, ice, and moose. (This is how I'm justifying it to myself!)
