Anybody remember in Win98 how to make desktop icon boxes clear? .... and also in XP?

I used to subscribe to LockerGnome's newsletters, and I found out from there how to make the text box color clear. I wonder if I can do that same trick to WinXP?

I dont think this will help you but...

Right click on your desktop>properties... then click on the desktop tab. Then, click the "Customize Desktop" tab. Then, click the "Web" tab, and unclick the "Lock Taskbar Items" button.

Are you talking about having a blank space instead of a text descriptor? That's fairly easy to do. Right click on the icon; hit rename. Then make sure Number Lock is on. Finally, hold down ALT and press 0160. Let go of ALT, and voila! You'll see it insert a space, which can be used in place of the text.

If you want to do it for more than one icon, insert a space (spacebar press) after each ALT+0160. So the second icon would have 1 space in addition to the ALT+0160, the third would have two, and so on.

I'll remember the ALT+0160 trick. Awesome.

However, I'm trying to turn the text boxes clear in color so that I may just see the desktop wallpaper with my icon text over it.

Go to the System control panel -> click on the Advanced tab -> Goto Performance Settings -> make sure that 2nd from bottom (use drop shadows for icon labels.....) is ticked.
To have the Modern XP look and keep the performance, select "adjust for best performance" (which will drop you to win2k look) but then select the bottom 2....
It will then give you XP theme, with transparent icons..

I have WindowBilnds installed, and I can't get this trick to work. There is still a color, gray, behind my text. I know it's a booger to get this configured, but it's my mission that will be done. I just can't yet figure out how.

That feature is only on XP and 2k3 (Server?), but I would say it works if you use those programs such as windowblinds and what not.

I know what you are talking about. I've actually looked this up and someone wrote a program just to do this. It's a really tiny file called trans.exe and I can send it to you if you want. It works great in Windows 2000, but I haven't tried it on Windows 98.. It might work. Just send me a pm.

Edit: I was bored and decided to search this up for you:

Enjoy.

jenov4:

Does that trans only have to be run once? I found another one, but it's systray program which is stupid. As soon as you turn off the program it goes back to normal icons.

aim name is : muncheese if you can get that to me. (the link on the annoyances site doesnt work. )
