Anyone else love using the stylus in Mario 64 DS?

I'm just wondering what everyone's favourite control setup is for Mario 64 DS. I've tried them all, and the stylus offers the most precise control. I actually find it more enjoyable and easier than using the N64 analog...

Yes! God, I don't know how people can find the thumb pad better than the stylus.

It might actually be preciser than the analogue stick, though I still perfer the N64's way slightly. If only because I'm often having to reposition the stylus towards the centre of the screen and it gets old.

I have to try that I still only have 50 Stars

I want to learn how to jump to the castle roof before the end of my life on this earth
Has anyone used the Stylus to do that?

:)

I got all 150 stars using only the digital pad, never really tired the other modes except for a couple minutes.

I'm glad someone had the nuts to mention this again. In spite of all the hate surrounding Mario 64 DS' controls I actually enjoy the stylus mode. While it doesn't replace the analog perfectly it is still intuitive enough to manage the difficult platforming bits. I like it.

Are you guys using your right hand for the stylus? How can you manage doing a running long jump? Don't you have to press the equivalent of Z + A + move your stylus all at the same time? Aren't Z +A mapped to the d-pad?

I think touch mode with the thumbpad is the best...

You run with the stylus, hold down on the D pad, press up on the D pad (if you're right handed). It's not a problem.

It's cool that you're having a good time with the stylus; I'm really good at stylus control in Mario 64 too.

But anyone who believes this statement here sucked at Mario 64 for N64. And that's a fact. The analog stick for N64 Mario 64 made the game control five hundred million times better than Mario 64 DS and was so precise and refined that to this day most games can't compete with that sort of upper-class refinement.

While the stylus does work fine, I'd prefer it if developers didn't make 3D platformers for the DS. There's 4 other systems and new ones to come out there for them to pick from, all of which have some sort of analogue stick, they should pick one of them.

EDIT: Same goes for 3D adventure games like Zelda.

Hook the little finger of your stylus hand under the system. Alternately rest it on your thigh. Unless you find yourself standing in queues wanting to play your DS a lot or something.

how many hands do you guys have I can't hold the stylus and jump at the same time :lol

You have to change the control mode to dual-hand mode and use the d-pad to jump.

Anyway, was just trying this mode.. and it doesn't work that well - my main problem with it is that you can't control the camera while moving - touch mode is superior, and almost perfectly emulates the analog stick.

I use the D-Pad and button set up. I occassionally use the stylus for precision, but I'm not too great at it. Anyway, I've got 33 Stars, and I just beat Bowser for the second time. Great game!

I really don't think the controls were a major concern with a lot of people. The problem is the game is still a little lean by today's platforming standards. Nintendo should've added a few more areas and beefed up the multiplayer.

I only have 35 stars or so as I need to find more time to play the game - but I SWEAR I have been on the castle roof. I remember vividly being up there as Mario and getting those 1ups as seen in the video. I have no idea how I got up there, I could swear it was by flying with Mario. Is that method with Luigi the only way to get up there this early in the game? It annoys me that I can't remember how it happened. It may also have been something to do with coming out of an actual level or something. I am worried that I may have dreamt the whole experience, but then, seeing that video has proven it was real because it was exactly the same up there. It is driving me mad. Help!

D-pad and 95 stars here. I didn't find the stylus control very good for Mario when I tried it a couple of times, but it's perfect for Metroid Hunters.

I believe a cannon is unlocked in the original by getting all 120 stars.

Alternatively, there's a VERY difficult way to reach the roof that involves wall jumping in an extremely tight area. Only the most talented players need apply.

I've gotten 130-some stars really only using the d-pad. The other modes were too odd at first glance for me to really spend any time with them.

Um, you mean like what was in that video? With Luigi?

If there is a way to do it with Mario, at the stage of the game I describe above, I want to see it, and will not rest until I get back on that fucking roof.

I have Mario, and 34 Stars, and just beat Bowser for the second time...When do I unlock the next character?

The next character is
Luigi
. Unlock this character by
finding his painting hidden in the Haunted Mansion level. Second floor in the rightmost door, use Mario's balloon ability to get to the top floor and jump in Luigi's painting. You'll have to fight a boss (King Boo IIRC) to get his key.

After that, the next character is
Wario. You gotta have Luigi to get him. Get to the mirror room on the second floor of the castle and use Luigi's invisibility to go through the mirror and hop into Wario's painting. Fight the boss, and get Wario's key
.

Kyoto, at the very beginning of the game, you are Yoshi sleeping on top of the roof... are you thinking of that?? I don't see how it is possible to get Mario up to the top of the roof without getting the cannon unlocked after getting the stars.

I wonder just what *is* on the roof this time around!! If it's a different coloured Yoshi, I'm gonna cry! :lol

To get Mario on the roof at the beginning of the game, you need to go to the far right a little bit past the tree thats closest to the hill. You need to start running parallel to the hill then do a triple jump, if my memory serves me correctly the first jump should land a little short of where the hill starts getting steep and the second jump should land somewhere in the middle of the steep part, and then hope you can get the third jump in before he starts sliding down. If you do it correctly he should start sliding backwards towards the castle, and if you jump off quickly he'll land on the roof. Sorry if my explanation isnt that great, I remember seeing it in a video a while ago and I was able to pull it off a few times after trying for maybe 15 minutes. Although I went back and tried recently and didnt get close, so I might have a few details wrong.

I have a few questions:

1. How is the thumb-stylus as opposed to the pen? Big difference?
2. Is it weird using the stylus with your left hand if you're a righty, even though you control every game character ever with the left?
