Does Anyone Else Like Thunderstorms?

They can look cool, but I wouldn't say I'm a big fan. I'd always prefer a sunny and less cluttered environment.

I'm a bit jaded from playing several hundreds of hours of BotW/TotK though where the rain tends to ruin my climbs all the time.

I don't know how people feel about rain and thunder but I personally love it. They have a storm outside right now.

Video games with realistic thunder and rain storms really feel great. Nice and soothing. One great example is when the storms coming rolling in on Elder Scrolls Morrowind and other ES games post Morrowind.

Do they feel good for you as it does for me?

I love thunderstorms in real life. When you mentioned videogame thunderstorms, I immediately thought of Morrowind, even before you said it. I can still remember walking through a storm on the Bitter Coast, even though it's been 20+ years since I played it. And it opens with a thunderstorm, of course, in the prologue.

"It was a dark and stormy night" is not a trope for nothing: it sets the mood nicely, if done well.

I also remember the heavens in Morrowind - stopping and looking at the huge moon and stars at night. The nature scenes stuck with me more than the plot did, heh. I am a nature lover, so that makes sense. I gravitate to games with outdoor, natural environments and tend to avoid games set in urban environments. I often find the latter feel sort of claustrophobic or mechanical to me.

Does anyone else simply love this question? :)

Anyway, yes, I do. I love thunderstorms. They're awesome.

Thank you OP for a nice question.

Love them, even more so in person. I use a rain app to help me with relaxing and comfort in general.

Wife is playing red dead and sometimes stops completely to watch the storms. Game looks boring to me but damn the environments are something.

Hell yeah, who doesn't? Storms are water and water is life.

The rain in Hunt showdown is just something else, ho watch a couple of videos (cause they removed it from the rotation for some reason) and listen to the audio.

Red Dead Redemption has some pretty good thunderstorms. On a few occasions I wasn't sure if the distant rumble of thunder I heard was in my headphones or real thunder outside. It turned out to be the game.

Oh, nice thread!

I love levels/setting with rain or thunderstorms (even more so if there's also a lake, river, etc.).

Some I really, really like

Soul Calibur, Maxi's stage (not the gratest quality, but the rain is amazing: you can even see the raindrop dry out)

Uncharted 2 chapter 10

OG RE4

RE4 remake (even after the downgrade)

GTA V (mods, but even vanilla is really good sometimes)

L4D2 Hard Rain campaign

I see some great suggestions, keep'em coming.

Rain makes everything better.

When people talk of rain/storms in games, I always think of Rain on PS3

And now I want to replay it again.
Any time I see Rain World mentioned, I'm always disappointed when I remember it's not a sequel to Rain.

yep. Rain, thunderstorm, snowstorms are the best.
Especially when it's night and you are sitting and playing video games.

In games same deal honestly. I especially like overcast weather in gaming.
Like Uncharted 4 island level when thunderstorm approaches. BEST IN CLASS

Yeah being inside looking out at thunderstorms is brilliant seem rare in the UK though.

BotW has some cool functional thunderstorms.

For aesthetic thunderstorms, the best game that I've personally played through would have to be Red Dead Redemption. I remember being a little awed during that one cattle driving mission on the 360.
I actually really like that about BOTW/TOTK

The weather in those games are MORE than just incidental background dressings. It's an Actual Gameplay element.

There's no better feeling than watching rain / thunderstorm while drinking some hot cocoa staring at a random mountain through a open window / balcony / porch of your cozy place.

I didn't. Every time it rained I'd get frustrated. I had to stop what I was doing, go into the clunky menu system to remove anything metal. If I was climbing something (which is like 60% of the game), I'd have to stand around to wait for the rain to stop.

That's what the Ninja Frog Suit is for. You look at it as an inconvenience (fair enough), I look at it as a challenge and a way to navigate the game world around it's (mostly logical) rules. It harkens back to NES game challenges where games weren't necessarily "fair" or "easy", imo.

To each his own, but yes that's a fair criticism.

Y'all got any more screenshots of the Uncharted 4 islands?

I like real thunderstorms. I also like the way they look across the plains when you can them in the distance.

My formative gaming rain related memories include:

-Playing the Song of Storms in the Kakariko Graveyard in Ocarina of Time at night and being super gay for the resulting atmosphere.

-Rainy night opening A Link to the Past. The sound effect, the filter overlay, the urgent music....fucking GOAT.

-The city of Burmecia in Final Fantasy IX. Damn it, Kuja, there are better wardrobe choices.

More recent examples include....uh....

*realizing I don't play recent games lately*

Storms in uh....Black Flag were pretty cool.

I was afraid of thunderstorms all up around something like 12. I had cousins who had an NES with Mario 3 and had been playing it since I was 3. When I was 7 I got my first console, the SNES packed with Mario All Stars. When I arrived on the floating fortress stage, I had to give the controller to my brother because I was terrified of the added thunderstorm compared NES original version.

I still wonder now, how such a primitive thunderstorm representation could scare me back then even though I didn't like this.

Love a good thunderstorm. It reminds me that humanity has conquered nature… mostly 😂

My Uncharted lithograph from the PlayStation Gear store is that scene.
