Anyone else not a fan of guest characters?

I'm cool with it if the entrie game is a crossover like marvel vs capcom, or something like smash. But anything else i just absolutely hate it. It doesnt matter what franchises. Could be a character from one of my favorite franchises coming to another game i love, i still hate it. Guess i'll just rather have more characters from that universe instead of bringing in from other universes, even if i like them.

Depends on how low effort and how frequently the guest character appears. Like Link in the Gamecube version of Soul Calibur 2 was pretty fucking cool, but I am ok with never having another Joker from Persona 5 or 2B in literally anything that will pay Square Enix money, despite how hot she is.

Once Guilty Gear had a guest character I well and truly realised the integrity of that IP has been destroyed.

Street Fighter 6 and the new Garou having them is also wrong.

Only MK and Soul Calibur could get away with it.

Could you maybe give an example of the stuff you hate? Because I can't think of anything right now off the bat where it feels off. Sonic with the human characters are weird, but then again that's always been a thing.

Depends on a lot of factors, especially how the character and its related themes/lore is implemented and fitted to the actual game..

Mario Kart 8 worked out pretty great:

Modnation Racers was an absolute nightmare:

It's not necessarily the issue of not fitting. I just prefer characters from that universe. I dont care if horror movie characters fot mortal kombat, i would rather have new mk characters or returning ones. Or even worse in killer instinct which to me had the best roster in fighting games by far. Season 3 killed the game for me because half the characters were guest characters, even though i love hale and gears, i wanted new KI characters, especially because all the new characters they had created were awesome.

Magic the gathering is also doing all those crossovers with things i like such as lord of the rings and final fantsy, still couldnt care less. Always just feels like a cash grab. I prefer a consistent universe instead of bringing in non canon stuff.

Depends on the games world. If it has deep lore and meaning then it can easily break immersion and be a negative. If it's a fighting game or some roguelike like Monster Train 2 recently, I think its kinda cool when implemented in that way.

Not for money grabs or probably the worst of the lot, timed sales of certain crossover DLC like the recent case with Dave the Diver and Like a Pirate Yakuza crossover, which could only be bought for in a short window.

Yeah I generally hate them for fighting games. Especially if there's in universe characters they could use that were missing from the base roster, like in MK 1. All those shitty pop culture guest characters and there's no Kano, Sonya etc? GTFO with that shit.

If it fits the game world and setting then I am mostly ok with it. Like Terry and Mai being in SF6, ok that could happen and they fit, it's
Not like they are Superman or something. Just other human martial artists.

Dresses and cosmetics make more sense to me, I like the heroes in Dota 2 dressing One Piece characters. Sometimes the dialogue like Duke in Bullet Storm makes it necessary.

Yeah i totally agree with this. A lot of skins are usually gonna be non canon anyway so having a costume from a guest isnt gonna ruin the game any more or less than all the other non canon skins.

Came here to post this.

It was also great that each console got it's own exclusive character.

Nintendo got Link for the GC
Microsoft got Spawn for the Xbox
Sony got Heihachi Mishima for the PS2.

I eventually had all three versions and Spawn was definitely my favourite.

That shit usually happens in fighting games and I don't play them. So I don't care about them

But yes, I would rather have more from the same universe and not a guest

Like other people said, I like it when it's done well. The gold standard is always Nintendo, with how they handle cameos in games like Smash and Mario Kart. It's not just a random character shoehorned into the game, but they get their own stages, music, and full representation.

This is antithetical to how, say, Fortnite does it, where they'll just have Peter Griffin randomly injected into the character roster.

Astro Bot is also a gold standard on how to showcase cameo characters, where those characters aren't always just collectibles, but many of them have their own style stages and music, and are really given top treatment of the IPs. And Team ASOBI is basically just "what if Nintendo, but owned by Sony", so it makes sense that they would treat those IPs with the same reverence that Nintendo does.

Guest characters are always awesome. Always.

Some of you guys are overthinking it. They're games. They're made to be fun. I couldn't care less if it fits the IP. Honestly, the weirder, the better.

For anyone curious, this footage is not from Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence. While Subsistence did have crossover content with Ape Escape, the content offered in Ape Escape 3 (and shown here) was far better. It's also a fantastic game in its own right and I highly suggest playing it for more than just the MGS content.

Geralt was one of the main reasons I got Soulcalibur VI, but generally I don't care for guest characters - only occasionally do they fit the host game.

I love em if they're done well, but if they're terrible it'll be the reason I don't buy the game. I legit want a MK game with just all the guest characters from MK and Injustice 2, I would adore that game lol.

I don't like the ones in Mortal Kombat, they look off somehow, but sometimes they are awesome, like having Sonic in Smash Bros (or the Solid Snake reveal).

I don't know. Cristiano Ronaldo was an obvious fit for Fatal Fury, if you ask me.

Street Fighter 6 could use someone like Morgan Freeman or Joe Biden to shake things up.

It is fine if they fit. I liked Link and Heihachi in Soul Calibur II but Spawn felt out of place. Geralt fits much better in Soul Calibur VI than the Star Wars characters in the other release. The guest character I hated the most was probably Negan in Tekken 7, but I'll admit I haven't played a Tekken game since Tekken 3. What also matters is how visible they are. If they are not always clearly visible on the character select screen, it's not as big of a deal. You could probably get away with almost any character in Smash. You could put Al Gore from Celebrity Deathmatch in Smash and it would still feel better than Negan in Tekken.

This is a great example and speaking of Link, his appearance in Soul Calibur 2 is amazing.

Doesn't bother me at all.
I really enjoyed it for Smash bros and I considered them in fighting games a novelty.
Not to be taken too seriously and not really worth getting good with as they won't carry over to the next installment.

I like it when it's like one or two characters.
Stuff like Link in Soul Calibur 2 or Kratos in Shovel Knight were fun IMO.

What I'm not a fan of is how they do it in modern Mortal Kombat where there's tons of guest characters. It feels like it goes from being a fun bonus to sort of diluting the identity of the game. At that point I'd rather have Netherrealm just fully commit to making a crossover fighter.

Generally not a fan of it, but it depends on the execution. I liked Dante in SMT: Nocturne. I did not like Geralt in Monster Hunter World (though to be fair I don't think I've liked any Monster Hunter crossovers, even with costumes).

It's admittedly tough to explain why I think one works and another does not. But overall, I think keeping everyone in their own universe works better.

I like them where it makes some sense. Fatal Fury and Street Fighter's characters crossing over makes sense to me, especially with the games having a shared lineage. I'm not a fan of MK's direction, where there's quite a lot of them, they have absolutely no ties to the series or any other fighting game franchise, and they're potentially overshadowing the franchise's own characters.

I'm fine with it for the most part but some choices are strange especially Negan in Tekken 7. The fact it was TV show Negan was even stanger. Then you also have Noctis in T7. He would fit more in Soul Calibur than Tekken. My favorite guest appearance is President Michael Wilson in Enchanted Arms. RICHARRRD!

I generally like them as long as they are well implemented. Tekken with Akuma and Geese tried to do something radically different with their playstyles which I appreciate though they didn't get the balancing right.
Geralt and Haohmaru in Soul Calibur 6 were a really good fit. Negan at least for his reveal trailer with that parody in from of a live audience was really hype.
Viewtiful Joe on PS2 had Dante which I really liked.

In blasphemous the chick from bloodstained showed up from a dimension gate or some shit. Hated it. I hate most of Devolvers crossovers, is like the lame youtuber shit.
