Anyone ever used sleeping pills?

So, here's the deal: I've been sick for about a week, and I'm fairly sure that I'm not getting better due to the lack of rest I get. Tomorrow is a day off, and I have nothing planned, so it would be awesome to rest up and feel better when I get up. Only problem is, I don't sleep for more than an hour or two at a time, and sometimes I just get up and stay up after only getting very little rest.

I would like to force sleep, but I've never used sleeping pills. Anyone here got any horror stories to share, or advice on which brand is best?

I tried it about a year ago, and I don't think it had much of an effect on me. I only tried one kind, though. It was recommended to me by my sister, but then again, she's not a doctor.

Sleeping pills only make you wake up feeling more like crap. I used to have trouble sleeping for the longest time, but I fixed that (wake up at 5:30 every morning and by the time 11PM comes around you're out cold!) - here's some suggestions I've heard for better sleep:

Don't drink any fluids an hour before bed

Don't exercise 3 hours before bed

Don't eat 4 hours before bed

No caffeine from 6-8 hours before bed

Maintain a tight sleeping schedule, try to go to bed the same time every night and wake up around a similar time

Set your alarm so you can sleep for about 8-9 hours (depending on how much you need)

It'll take a few weeks to regulate (I went from going to bed at 3:30AM every night whilst at school, to going to bed at 11 once I started working)

Bah - Just take Tylenol PM or Melatonin and you'll sleep right through. Yes, you'll be a little groggy in the morning but nothing a mug of java won't cure.

Edit: My sister gave me the pill too.

Yeah, I believe(and this is just coming from my psych class) that sleeping pills only make you sleep.

I say only because they don't make you go into REM sleep, which is what your body needs to heal and feel rested.

I have had a hard time sleeping for a long time, I just never seemed to go into "deep" sleep that much, woke up easily, and when I did wake up in the middle of the night, I had a hard time falling back to sleep.

I started taking Melatonin , and it has helped a lot. Not that it makes me sleepy right away, but I seem to sleep deeper and better with it.

It takes me forever to fall asleep, so I've tried a few sleeping pills.
Ambien (really strong, and fun as a recreation drug), and Valium are probably the 2 best. If you have more than 7 free hours to sleep, you will wake up feeling completely refreshed.

Alright, let's try another avenue.

I don't drink, but which alchohol would induce Hendrix-drowining-in-vomit kind of sleep?

I gave you all the advice you needed. Ambien and Valium, that's all there is to it. Ambien will knock you the fuck out.

I'm addicted to Ambien. Taking the normal dosage won't put me to sleep. I have to take double which fucks up my insides AND it's a 50% chance I won't wake up.

Well if you haven't taken any sleeping pills before then you should be fine. 1 pills should knock your lightweight ass out. I've been on every type of sleeping pill for 8 years. My body laughs at tylenol pm...unless I take like 10.

Melatonin is a natural sleeping pill. You won't wake up still sleepy either.

I've heard its effects are greatly exagerrated, but I've never tried it myself. Some claim it cures all their sleep problems, while others say it does little to nothing. Definitely something to look into, though, since it's probably far less dangerous than traditional sleeping medications.

To answer the thread's question: yeah, I've taken sleeping pills before, and they've always worked great for me. Long, restful sleeps and rejuvenated mornings. Take them when you really, really need to get some sleep, and they should be fine. You only start running into problems when you take them every night, which the box explicitly tells you not to do.

I take ambien during exam season or other stressful times. I haven't had any problems with it in either getting good sleep or quitting when I want to.

My grandmother has sleeping problems where she wakes up every hour or so. Her way of combatting this is to drink a shot or two of Rock & Rye before she goes to bed.

Ambien rocks. Take it like 20 mins before you want to me knocked out and thats it. It works fast, and feels good as you drift off to sleep. Plus I have never experienced a hangover from it except for when I have taken it recreationally and taken more than a normal dose.

I take melatonin, and for me it works very well. I'm a developer so when I can't sleep it usually because I'm thinking about some stupid defect. I find it really helps you get over the hump and fall asleep.

Holy shit just looked up Ambien and it's expensive!

I have that problem too. And I'm usually hungry when I wake up like that. It sucks.

Ambien never did anything for me as far as I could tell. It was day eleven with no sleep yet after surgery and I felt no different then if I was swallowing pez.

Never had THAT much trouble, the few times though such as when I had a bad toothache, or I slept all day and had to be up early in the morning something mild like Tylenol PM puts me out within half an hour.

If you want an alternative to Ambien, you could try Lunesta. It works similar, but it's a non-narcotic, so you don't get any of the addictive side effects.

I'm assuming this is somewhat similar to Tylenol PM, but my wife (and me, once in a while) use Tylenol Simply Sleep. Been working great so far for both of us.. so.. ~shrugs~

I think I've seen CM's on TV for that. I have really bad sleeping problems, so I need to get back on sleeping medication sometime soon again. I was prescribed this one medication that knocked me out in 20 minutes when I was younger but my mom made me take it every night at a certain time. :( I'm not sure if regular doctors give that stuff out or not though.. So next doctor's appointment, I'll talk to my doctor about it and see what she can do. If not, I'll have to go back to a psychiatrist to get something..

Ambien didn't work too well for me. The closest description I can come up with for the feeling of taking it is like when you're falling asleep in class or a meeting or something. You start falling asleep and then you snap yourself out of it quickly as a knee-jerk reaction to it. I'd feel like that for several minutes and end up never falling asleep for good.

Luckily, my insomina problem has mostly gone away recently.

Nyquil stuff. It'll knock you the fux out! :D

I took it one time and slept like a rock!

Or better yet, why don't you go to the doctor and get a prescription.

I took Nyquil once when I was sick. It was all we had. But I made the mistake of taking it without going to sleep. So all it ended up doing was getting me really depressed. :( My advice, don't take that kind of stuff unless you plan on sleeping. :x

Sleeping pills puts your body in a resting state, but you don't get the REM sleep needed for your brain that only comes with regualar sleeping. Highly unrecommended.

I'm calling bullshit on this. The majority of time I take 'em, I feel like I've slept...you know, like really slept. So what are you talking about?

Right now I'm using a prescribled sleeping pill called Lunesta. It's worked better for me than some others. I was taking something else for awhile, but it lost it's effect quickly enough. I also used Melatonin for awhile, but that wore off for me, too.

A friend of mine put sleeping pills and no-doze into their flatmates drink once, you know, to see which one would win.

It was the sleeping pills.

Ambien worked really well for me but then I started taking bigger dosages until I just quit. It took about 4-5 days. In the first 3 I wasn't able to do anything but refresh gaf. I didn't sleep for a good 20 minutes during those 3 days and god the HEADACHES. I do have some good memories of it though, as I said it really did help. Sometimes I took 2 pills, to sleep faster, while I'm at my desk and 5 minutes later I'll barely be able to make it to my bed. Everything felt soooo good and kinda blurry. :D :lol

So, uh, yeah stay away unless you really need it.

Outside of working a full day, melatonin (NOW brand) works well for me. Outside of that, a couple of shots of vodka from the freezer does the trick.

That's why I take melatonin. It is what you body produces naturally, but produces less of as you get older. Its why teenagers can sleep until the afternoon, and older people can't seem to sleep past 5:00 am. When I take it I sleep much deeper, and dream alot more, which means REM sleep. When I have taken pain drugs for injuries or something that make you sleepy, I may fall asleep fast, but don't feel rested in the morning like I do with Melatonin.

Is Melatonin a drug or some sort of natural herb?

I tried the over the counter ones in NZ a bunch of times, they were just an antihistamine with a sedative side affect, gives you a shitty hangover the next day.

What exactly is Melatonin?

"Melatonin is the all-natural nightcap. It's secreted by the pineal gland, a pea-size structure at the center of the brain, as our eyes register the fall of darkness." At night melatonin is produced to help our bodies regulate our sleep-wake cycles. The amount of melatonin produced by our body seems to lessen as we get older. Scientists believe this may be why young people have less problem sleeping than older people.

I used to take Melatonin, and it worked great but it had a bad side effect for me because it for some reason was constantly trying to shrink my balls (I read tests that it shrunk birds testicles :( ) which put them under constant pressure (not fun times) luckily it doesnt seem like it had any permanent effects. Maybe my dose was too high, it worked great for sleeping and waking up refreshed so maybe one day it will work without trying to shrink balls
