My penis is still intact.
I am. As always, no good TV this summer, so try this one. It starts on Fox on June 8th (at 9 I think), and it's about...well, I'll just copy and paste a description:
That sounds quite interesting, but wouldn't be enough alone for me to get excited. What does get me excited is who's working on it.
It's been created by Tim Minear and Howard Gordon. Howard Gordon has a damn good resume, having bother written or been some form of producer on The X-Files, Buffy, Angel and 24. Tim Minear, who seems to really be in charge of the show, has been both writer and executive producer on Angel, Firefly and Wonderfalls.
Those two alone are probably enough to get half this board interested. There's more though! David Fury is on board for the second half of the season, before he joins 24 next year. Maybe he'll write a script, I don't know, but I think he's really just there to get the show up and running, set the tone for the series. If you don't know who he is, he wrote more Buffy and Angel scripts than anyone else aside from Joss Whedon, the creator. He also moved to Lost last year and wrote Walkabout, the first Locke episode, which is probably the best fucking piece of television ever.
Jane Espenson is a co-executive producer on the show, and, like with Fury, I'm not sure if she's writing as well or not. I mainly know her as a Buffy writer, though she's done small amounts of work on Angel, Firefly, The OC, Gilmore Girls...I dunno about her though. I think she's a good writer, but some people think she's amazing and I just can't see it. If she was creating a show on her own, I wouldn't be very excited, but with the rest of this talent around her, she should be a decent addition.
Ben Edlund! Or so I hear. He's writing at least one episode anyway, I can't seem to find out if he's fully on board or not. Creator of The Tick, writer on Firefly and Angel, hilarious guy. He wrote the funniest episode of Angel or Buffy that I've ever seen. Has also shown his talents as a more serious writer too.
Richard Hatem is the only other name I know, and only vaguely. He created and wrote for Miracles, the soon cancelled ABC show. To be honest I haven't seen it, but I know it gained a huge fanbase in a short amount of time and is supposed to be superb, with widespread critical acclaim.
As for the cast...well I don't really know them. Except Adam Baldwin (Firefly, Angel, The X-Files). Oh and Katie Finneran is the lesbian sister from Wonderfalls I've just noticed. Rachel Nichols is the main character, but as far as I can tell this will be her big break (or not).
So yeah, sure, it's mostly ex-Whedon guys, but that's just who I know, there are other people on board. And you can't blame them for wanting to work together again, not when Angel, Buffy and Firefly were such triumphs (though the latter, sadly, only critically). Still, there's no sci-fi or fantasy elements to The Inside, as far as I know, so maybe give it a go even if you don't like those other shows.
For those worried Fox is going to cancel yet another series you've just fallen in love with, it's only a 13 episode first season anyway, so you'll probably get at least one whole season out of it before they bring the hammer down.
She reminds me of Jodie Foster there, and given Tim Minear describing the show as a bit like Silence of the Lambs, that should be cool.
BTW, The Inside was under development by someone else quite a while ago, and had almost a completely different premise (FBI agent undercover at a high school), so don't be put off if that sounded lame. They basically just kept the name and Rachel Nichols.
With very little field experience, rookie F.B.I. Agent Rebecca Locke will become part of a sinister and unsavory world when she is recruited to join the Bureau's Los Angeles Violent Crimes Unit as a new profiler. A special division headed by Supervisory Special Agent Virgil "Web" Webster that is devoted to investigating the darkest and most heinous crimes committed by human beings.
Unbeknownst to Rebecca, her traumatic past that she has struggled to bury and keep hidden from others is the sole reason why Web has recruited her. That what had tormented Rebecca so long ago will give her a unique insight and place her in a specific mindset to help her tackle these cases. This is also the case with her new colleagues as Web knows each of their past histories and secrets. It remains unclear the lengths that he is willing to go with his agents in order to successfully solve a crime.
That sounds quite interesting, but wouldn't be enough alone for me to get excited. What does get me excited is who's working on it.
