Anyone from Washington State? o_O

I'm thinking about buying a house in Washington. I've been hearing some really great stuff about the real estate there, but I've never actually BEEN there myself. I hear the Olympia, Dupont and Puyallup regions have nice houses for great prices but I also hear those areas are very "cookie cutter"-ish or like one of those housing projects where every house looks exactly the same. O_O Any input would be great...

Yeah; I live in Renton, but I'm not exactly well-travelled. I guess it's nice enough.

the most potential for resale is Issaquah, Renton, NewCastle. All of those are very close to Bellevue, but not overblown like places north of Bellevue, like Kirkland, Mill Creek, Bothell, Woodinville.

Bellingham is very pretty, but a little remote.

Fuck Renton. DIRTVILLE.

BOTHELL GANGSTAZ 4 LIFE. We have more lesbian church pastors than every Seattle suburb combined!
Don't forget all the various tent cities in Bothell as well!!

Oregon is blow city. It's shit tacular.

If you want good times, go to Shelton. It's awesome. Cheap as hell, awesome properties, water, mountains, close to Olympia, Bremerton. WHAT DOESNT IT HAVE (BESIDES HOT WOMEN)?!?!?

Kennewick (eastern WA).

I used to live a few minutes from Puyallup, but it's been a long time since so I don't know what it's like now.

Thats about the cost of the rent here in mill creek for the same thing, and its somehow rural without being remote. Mill Creek rocks.

What size house and how much do you want to spend. Reveal this info and we can tell you where you shall live.
I'm thinking around
Price: $350,000-$500,000
Bedrooms: 3+
Bathrooms: 2.5+
Front Yard : Yes
Back Yard : Yes
Garage: Yes
Size: 2,500 sq.ft.+

Also, what's the environment like around the places you guys are mentioning. O_O

I hear Oregon is kind of racist. No offense. O_O I'm asian so I kind of have to take those things into account... I don't want my neighbors to hate me.
Oh yeah, huge racists there. Lynchings all the time. It's taught in their schools, state law and all.

why are you interested in washington if you dont live here?
I have a lot of friends that moved to or are from Washington that love it. Also, being from the Bay Area, it's super expensive to live here. Also for the same price of Washington real estate I get crap here. :-(

I'm not looking for anything huge. This will be my first time purchasing a house. I really just want a place to "get away from it all" and be on my own.

Thanks for all the input so far, guys! \(^O^) Keep them coming if you have anything. I really appreciate it.

(So I guess Seattle itself isn't all that great huh? O_O)

It all depends on what kind of environment you are looking for.

I will tell you that bellingham is in the freakin boonies. What kind of work are you in? You probably won't find work in that area and would have one hellish commute.

Mercer island is the best commute location. It is central to all of the major areas with potential for work. It is quite expensive to live there though.

Bellevue is an upscale yuppie kind of city it's sort of a mini seattle without any nightlife.

Kirkland is a small yuppie town with waterfront property a very low crime rate and good school district.

Redmond is a little more rural but it is home to Microsoft so lots of MS people live out there.

Issaquah is a smaller rural town that is growing rapidly and looks to expand very quickly with MS building a second campus out there.

Seattle of course is seattle. There are many suburbs in seattle like Queen anne, Capitol Hill, Magnolia, Ballard, etc... I live in magnolia which is about a 10 minute commute into downtown seattle. Very nice area housing prices are quite high in the area.

Magnolia may have some homes that fit your description but most of the homes are older in the area and may be smaller than what you want.

Housing in the areas I mentioned are quite high and are rising every day. It is definately a sellers market right now.

I don't know if you have kids nor do I know what sort of work you are in.

The areas that you will want to stay in are no more east than north bend, no more west than west seattle, no more north than lynnwood, and no more south than tukwilla. Tacoma is not a bad option for down south. Bremerton is a nice area but employment is a bit weak out there.

I prefer what is referred to as the east side which consists of Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Issaquah and Mercer island. Housing can be somewhat steep on the east side. You may want to discuss your options with a real estate agent. Many people are voicing their opinion of Bellingham but it is pretty far out there with not much around it. It is about 90 miles away from Seattle.

Anyways there some stuff for you.

Here's a pretty good map of the area so you can get an idea of the cities I mention.

The best places to live within a decent distance from all the major areas of the Sound area will be between Mill Creek and Bothell. You'll get the most out of your money I believe and you won't be off too bad if you want to travel both to the eastside and to downtown Seattle. A better area is between the University of Washington and Bothell but I don't think you'll be finding many homes between there. I live around Northgate which falls inbetween the UW and Bothell and I really don't ever see any decent homes up for sale. It's a fantastic area though. I do not recommend the Eastside personally (Bellevue and etc). Very boring and very bad commuter traffic normally. The south end is supposedly isn't too shabby either but I almost never go farther south than Southcenter/Seatac myself.

Redmond was awesome when I was there. I would frequently pass through Bellvue as there were some good places to eat there. Mercer Island is beautiful. I have friends who started working for Microsoft when I interned there, they have since retired and live on Mercer Island :)

I am from Seattle and lived there all my life until I moved to Japan.. Washington is getting pretty expensive all around..

Above Kirkland and east of the LCW (Lake City/Shitty Way)/Aurora ghetto on the north side of Lake Union is Bothell and Juanita. Despite my gags, Bothell's a bit kooky -- we have a lot of progressive churches mixed office parks. It's a very weird combination of folksy suburbia and Bellevue corporate hell. Canyon Park and Bothell-Everett highway are rapidly developing and getting a lot of nice smaller chains and mom/pop outfits. Houses run about $250K-$500K on average there. Juanita has more lake front property and slightly cheaper houses, but it's also older and has less convenient access to the 405.

Mill Creek is five miles north of Bothell and east of Lynnwood. It's a really pretty locale, and has an eclectic mix of rich and working class. Prices are good there; houses run from $180K to some crazy-ass prices in the gated commmunities. It's a good growth area.

West of the LCW is Greenlake and Shoreline, which both rock and have really good prices. Greenlake is a little ghetto, but it's rapidly becoming the new Fremont. Shoreline has great markets and nightlife, but it's a painful commute to both Seattle and Bellevue.

Bellingham is only about 50 mi. from Vancouver. You might want to think about that. If I were you, it'd be my first choice. Proximity to Canada + Mt. Baker = match made in heaven.
