Anyone get scared after watching The Grudge?

Ever since I saw The Grudge, whenever I'm walking through a dark hallway at night or something I expect to see that lady's face come towards me from out of the shadows. Or sometimes when I'm trying to go to sleep (my bed faces the closet) and the closet is open, I think her face is going to come out of it and I can't sleep from fear.

Anybody else experience this?

PS: Great scares, but not that good of a movie. I liked it better than Saw though.

I'm glad Grandpa porked a Chinese Muslim
I haven't seen it, but that scene of the kid meowing in the commercials really makes it seem cheesy.

I never get scared of horror movies anymore. :(

I have watched most movies which are labeled "the most scary". The last movie that scared me was "Blair Witch Project" when I saw it the first time.

edit: And look at his username!

That's the weird thing. I'm the Horror Champion! I watch horror movies all the time... name a horror flick and I've probably seen it (unless you get into the 70's and earlier... then my record's kinda spotty). I read a lot of horror books. I've played and enjoyed horror games.

Yet The Grudge managed to get to me like no movie has since The Ring.

Am I the only one who found this funny?

The Ring was a very disturbing movie. You went into the theater thinking, "how the fuck is a movie about a killer videotape going to be scary?" Then the film starts, and from the first couple of scenes you think that, oh fuck, this is going to be like one of those crappy teen slasher Scream crapfests. It sets your expectations real low... then it shatters all of your previous conceptions.

I like the detective aspect of it a lot. Things are just so strange and bizarre that you can't figure out what's going on at first, but you try to piece together the mystery along with the protagonist, and every time a new clue is found it was just thrilling. And dreadful. It was just a huge buildup to the scene where they find the well (which was one of the most suspenseful scenes EVAR!!), and it all worked fantastically up until that point. The ending of the movie was a little disappointing, but everything else was ACE!!

The Grudge was a good "shocker, jump out of your seat" movie, but it didn't leave any lasting impressions with me...like "The Ring" did.

sometimes i wonder if grudge dissers are just dissing it because they've seen others hate on it, or if they actually feel that way. i don't understand why people didn't like it, i thought the movie was awesome.

but yes, this movie scared the shit out of me. i have had nightmares about it since (thank god rat saves me at the end each time), but holy crap it was freaky.

p.s. the kid doesn't meow. if you had watched the movie (which i know you haven't, im not criticizing) you would know that the boy actually has a cat. infact, the "meow" only happens once (when the teacher comes into his house). the part you see on the commercial with his mouth opening wide and meowing doesn't happen in the movie (the sound effects dont matchup). in the actual movie, the dudes wife is laying scared shitless on the bed, the husband has no idea wtf is going on so he goes up to her and she's just shivering and staring at the ceiling, so he says "im going to call a doctor" so he reaches across the bed for the portable phone and that little fuck pops up and roars (not meows) at him. that scene in the movie sent chills down my spine!

but, again, i must advise: don't be hooked in by the opinions of people on this board. the movie is excellent, and while many of the scares are "cheap", even more are psychological and had me creeped out. i guess i'm in the minority, but i loved the movie and yes it has stayed with me

I think what got me about The Grudge is that she looked so utterly terrifying. And I'm not sure why that is... since seeing the movie I've looked at still pics of her face and she's not that scary looking that way. But in the movie her presence exudes this aura of fear. Her eyes are so dead and her expression is locked in that agonized look. Just seeing her is scary enough, but when she's going after the characters and they can't get away from her... that's just fucked up.

The stairwell scene was my fave, and that didn't have anything to do with suprise.

When you say "her/she," are you talking about Samara (from "The Ring") or the woman in "The Grudge?"

The movie does have a lot of drawbacks, mainly with the fucked up progression. A lot of the people here are movie snobs it seems, with a list of critical things that, if done incorrectly, will make them hate the movie. If you're a person that can overlook flaws, though, The Grudge is a great horror film.

The Grudge. Samara didn't look scary to me, though she DID freak me out in other ways.

i'm cool with criticism, but the way people talk about the grudge around here you would think it was of battlefield earth quality... or, if you want to compare to horror movies, I spit on your grave quality! i agree the movie has problems, but god damn people are brutal with it here. and no i wont say "YOU'RE ENTITLED TO YOUR OPINION, IM A HUGE VAGINA LETS ALL GET ALONG!" the movie is awesome overall, suck it down!

You shouldn't have to. Saying you like a movie should in no way rile others. It's the people who rag on you for your tastes who are disrupting the peace. But there is a difference between ragging on you for liking the movie and simply ragging on the movie. Just as you are allowed to voice your love, they should be able to express their hate for it.

Prince of Darkness owns The Grudge and The Ring, I must say.

Hmmm, why I didn't like it? Let's see...could it be the obvious plot problem of a cursed house that kills people for years yet nobody really seems to notice or care? Maybe....but lets just suspend that reality for horror's sake and ignore that. Then is it the backtracking method of storytelling that actually kills momentum the movie tries to get going? Yes, IMO, I believe so. How about the totally unexplained link to SMG as to why she sees everything that went on in the house previously, yet the curse still wants to kill her like everyone else. How about her totally useless boyfriend, why is he in this movie exactly? I don't buy their chemistry at all when they're together either. The scares are cheap yes, but the imagery is so ripped from the Ring, which is way too current of a film. Black or dark apparitions floating around. Things slowly crawling on the floor after people. I dunno, I didn't find it scary at all....and after awhile, I just didn't care what the grudge was or if it did or didn't kill again. I don't see what that has to do with beeing snobby. It was simply a film I didn't like. I don't need a list of things, or a majority to tell me that. I never listen to majority opinion anyway.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
What I didn't like about The Grudge is that if you took out all the money shot trailer-friendly scare scenes, the movie would have been absolutely worthless. A truly good horror film should scare me with its atmosphere and plot and pacing and the use of the characters and increasing sense of dread, as well as the cheap scares. Movies like The Shining and Exorcist have that. The Grudge does not. Sure the movie had some really creepy imagery, but it's the kind of stuff that's interchangable with movies like The Ring and so forth, and when that's all the movie has, then what's the point?

That said, I enjoyed The Grudge for what it was worth, although I went into it expecting something akin to The Ring and nothing better.

And yeah, the stairwell scene in the office building was creepy as hell.

Biggest disappointment for me this year movie wise.

1. I thought the main actress was going to be this hot chick that I had been fantasizing over... see the movie, and it definetly looks like her... but much less hot. Kinda disappointed... but then I check the credits and the name of the chick I like, thankfully not the same girl.

2. Ending was just the biggest wtf... as in... why the fuck did nothing happen?

3. the only scene I thought mildly amusing/clever was the elevator scene... kid appears... once... twice... thrice... then disappears as the lift stops.

HL2 definetly gave me more frights with the zombie headcrab dudes popping outta no where.

That scene was ripped of from Dark Waters

The only thing that scared me about the Ring and the Grudge is that there will be more movies like them being ported over from Japan

Managed to track down both Ju On 1 and 2, as well as The Grudge 2. Haven't seen the US version and most probably won't.. thought the movies were decent and there were a few scenes that grabbed me.

Problem with most Asian horror films is that they depict spirits/ghosts quite a lot, and something like that in Western culture is sorta shunned upon or at least is these days. Think a lot of it has to do with fear really as well as being in the presence of such a case - hence why people who don't really believe or have no fear of what a spirit can do brushes off movies like these (correct me if you think I am wrong).

I haven't experienced a "ghost eating season" in an Asian country before, but from what I am told quite a lot of people are on the edge during it because of what comes around later on to those that make a mistake or just simple stories that are passed on to kids to stop them from ever making the same mistakes. A lot of it is psychological and supposed to be hauting yet simple - i.e. a grandma tells her grandaughter to eat every grain of rice in her bowl or her husband in the future will have acne/pimple problems just like that bowl with left-over bits of rice, thus it makes her eat all of her food without ever wasting the money away.

Films like Ju On and The Ring take it the usual Asian spirit theme one step further, forcing violent issues onto people that have barely batted an eyelid which is laughable to most. We all want serial psychotic killers in our movies :lol
