In avengers endgame smarthulk says that when somone is time traveling there are individual timelines where if you go to the past the present becomes your past and the past becomes your future.

So...

If you, today in 2021 went to 1971 that would actually be your future and 2021 would become your past.

But, the thing I dont understand is just because 1971 becomes your personal future it is still 1971, it is still 51 years in the past, so if you did change something in 1971 and went back to 2021 your actions still have the potential to alter the 2021 you returned to right??

I mean just because your individual timeline gets messed up the collective timeline is something which is like a growing road.

I still dont get why they cant just of gone and killed baby thanos.

I only saw Endgame once so I don't remember their version of time travel too well. But you have to define the rules like you're trying now.
There are many theories on time travel. The Back to the Future theory. The FFXIII-2 time loop with auto-paradox self-correction. The Endgame theory. The Looper theory.

I never finished Loki either, but that's almost entirely about this stuff and probably fleshes it out a bit I'd think.

Ive read an article and it says you cant alter the future by going to the past because MCU time travel is not actually traveling on a collective timeline and when somone does time travel they are actually creating divergent individual timelines?

Man... Thats seems more like traveling to different dimensions rather then time travel.

Well they do have a multiverse which basically means an alternate timeline for every variable into infinity.

Wasn’t it explained somewhere that when you go back in time and change something, you create a new timeline in an alternate dimension? So the future you just came from, Future A, carried on as you left it, but you’ve also created Future B to run alongside it.

Exactly. And to get back to your original past you have to return to pretty much the moment you left from.

MCU works with multiple timelines/universes to my understanding.

When you go back in time you leave your timeline and go to another, the timeline you left continues without you in it. The timeline where you're going to will have now 2 of yous(if you were born then that is) rather than your future self replacing your younger self.

If you went back to your own timeline, the one you left from, should be unaffected by what you did in the past of the other timeline. That would only be affected if you went to the future of the timeline with the 2 of yous.
y they cant just of gone and killed baby thanos.
I think there's ethical issues with executing someone who's not committed crimes yet.

But as you’ve changed events in the actual past, the timeline in front of it has now been altered, therefore you’d end up in the new future. The path to your old future has been closed off in another dimension and timeline.

Lets use Endgame as an example as this is explicitly shown in the movie.

When Tony and Steve are in 1971, Steve already decided to pull off his plan to go back and be with Peggy, so he steals FOUR vials of Pym Particles:

2 vials are needed for him and Tony to return home. When they do, Steve is still holding two vials:

After returning the stones, he'll use 1 vial to travel back to 1947 to be with Peggy.

But since he can't just wait in that timeline (which is a NEW universe he created by going back and being with her), he needs to use that 2nd vial to jump back to the original 2023 timeline he left in the first place to give Sam the shield.
