DS was not selling that well before NSMB came out in the US. A redesign in hardware may give hardware sales a bump, but in order for it to keep going there has to be software behind it. NSMB was one of the 'rockets' that helped elevate the DS in US.
What I find fascinating is that new gamers, who might buy a DS for those dreaded 'non-games', tend to pick up NSMB. But they are not picking up Mario 64 DS.

They need to please us hardcore Nintendites on some level, and I'd be a little letdown if they gave up on the 3D mario's for sales. The sense of exploration and freedow amazed me.
a 2D mario almost seems like the easy way out.
I never said to give up on 3d Marios. I am saying that 3d incarnations should not be the only line of the franchise. There is no reason why there can't be a 2d Mario as well.
I think we will see a new 2d Mario game designed on the Wii in the vein of 'Super Mario Brothers'. NSMB's sales should wake Nintendo up. There are so many new possibilities of a new 2d Mario game with the Wii. Using online, you could play multiplayer and maybe have more than two people in a game. What about a map editor where people could make their own single player levels and multiplayer levels and trade them through WiiConnect24? Since Wii is a 24/7 console, Nintendo could add in new levels or worlds to download.
Anyway, I am cautiously optimistic about Mario Galaxy. I think Nintendo has some more surprised for us in terms of WiiConnect24 capability and maybe minigames.
