Anyone here ever fought a speeding ticket? (And won?)

A police officer was originally going to book me for 2 driving offences - speeding and skipping a red light.

Because of my job he only charged me for the latter. Which was quite nice of him.

Nope, my own fault for speeding so might as well take responsibility.

Whats your job, if you dont mind me asking?

My dad did a little while ago. They had the wrong signage up and he got tagged in a place he couldn’t have known the speed dropped. He fought it and won and rightfully so. He doesn’t usually speed like that.

Was nearly a $1k ticket too

Not my own story but my college physics professor does a side hustle as an expert witness to explain why it's not possible for someone to be speeding when a cop say they were.

I fought a traffic ticket once (on my own - no legal help), it was for a violation other than speeding that I didn't believe was just, the judge did side with me... but only after telling me to go to traffic school and come back and see him... which I did, and I got the ticket money back but only after doing traffic school (which would have taken it off my record any way, the judge not siding against the cop in court, and me spending more time away from work than what the ticket was worth).

Also, despite some rumors you might have heard out there the issuing officer will pretty much always show up to the court date. They get paid to be there, maybe even overtime.

Heard that can be countered by requesting some continuances on em.

100% true. My brother's official salary as a cop is around 60k. His annual take home is 140k. The bulk of his income comes from overtime caused by court dates or on-call shifts. A bit comes from selling himself as a private cop while the PD gets a cut. All 100% legal btw. One only has to look at the system that provides incentives to not actually perform police work if you ever wonder why high crime areas persist despite such high spending on LEO.

Technically it wasn't a fight and it wasn't me. When the cop saw that me and my ex (who was driving ) are both deaf (pre-Cochlear Implant), he let us go with a warning.

Remember the song, I fought the law and the law one.

I did get a judge to change a ticket to a non moving violation once so I wouldn’t lose my job.

Fought one? No. But instead of paying it, I went to court, put on a nice suit, and the judge let me go to a driving school for 2 hours and it wiped the ticket out/removed it from my record.

Claims are rated for a period of 6 years and convictions are rated for a period of 3 years. When you pay for a ticket you plead guilty. Convictions, even minor ones will cause your insurance premiums to go up.
Never got a speeding ticket in my life. I always get driven to wherever I need to go.

Exactly what happened to me. Cause of my job, which I did tell him what I do,

He came back and said, I would have taken you to jail right now for two offenses and have your car impounded, but I'm giving you a warning.

Crazy.

I was forced to attend a driving awareness course however for skipping a red light.

Since then I primarily drive on cruise control. And have made a conscious effort to obey all traffic lights. I would prefer to maintain my clean record and avoid any penalty points. Prior to this incident I used to floor my car at every opportunity. I have a lead foot..

I haven't had to fight a ticket yet (knocks on wood) but I've gathered a few things from people that have: you should absolutely fight it, at least in Canada. Most police officers don't turn up for the hearing and it gets dismissed, most of the time their speed gun hasn't been calibrated within the timeframe the law requires and it's also grounds to get the ticket dismissed.

Sometimes they schedule the hearing multiple months away and eventually it just gets dropped randomly as well.

I showed up to court fight my speeding ticket that I got while driving across the tri-state area because I provided my own dashcam footage and due to the fact that the county rep never showed. Dodged a $850 ticket and got laid while I stayed in the town overnight using a coupon I got from Holiday Inn in an email thanks to the fact the hotel was next to a very cheap bar next door.

Best ticket I ever got. Thank you Officer Stevens. You ignorant fuck.

I've had a 2 or 3 speeding tickets get deferred, but the other 10 stuck.

My advice is to just take it on the chin. If you're in the US, it's usually not very expensive.

Except in Georgia where you might get surprised by a super speeder fine. (Never got nailed by it myself but I've heard of people deciding to not fight it and then finding out "SURPRISE" your fine is higher than we said it was.) FWIW I consider speeding tickets to be largely money making scams so fighting it makes sense because the state lost all the money they were going to make if you fight it.

I did fight a parking ticket in Minneapolis once while on vacation. The meter said that it did not get checked on Sundays, but there was a Saints game going on and I received a $100 ticket. I took a picture of the meter and mailed a copy of the picture with the ticket and an explanation on why I wasn’t paying. The court sent me a letter saying the ticket was cleared and I owed nothing. The reason that I didn’t go to court was because I live in Ohio and really didn’t want to take the 12 hour drive back to contest it.

I'm bout to fight one myself boys. February court date. This dickhead cop had it out for me and "paced" me for about 3 seconds as I was speeding up for a merge to the highway about to hit 70MPH, the speed limit, from a 50MPH service road. I got him verbally saying he paced my at 60 twice. And he cited me for 70. So not only is he wrong, because that is legal, but he straight up lied just because he didn't like the interaction.

I'm gonna request the body cam footage and dash cam footage and he's toast. I got him dead to rights.

One guy at work did. He made the news about 10 years ago. He thought he was wrongly fined so he found the camera calibration certificate had been scanned in online incorrectly and so was unreadable, the police could not produce the original and so hundreds of refunds had to be made to everyone caught by that camera. Cost them around £40k.

Never had a speeding ticket. Had a reckless driving ticket reduced to improper driving ($25 fine) because my lawyer was ace.

Edit: I took a left turn through a lane in an unfamiliar area, where it was not allowed (there were honestly no signs). Some cop claimed I turned into incoming traffic, even though there were no other cars on the road. My lawyer embarassed the cop in court

Once, many years ago, I was speeding through town like a complete asshole - like, going at maybe 100 ie. double the speed limit, flying in front of some lady who wanted to cross the street etc… saw some flashing blue lights in the mirror and didn’t think much of it, must be an ambulance… I pull off the main road and into the road where my friend I was going to visit lived and stop the car, and an unmarked police car with one of those magnetic roof lights screeches to a stop next to me… two cops get out of the car, the one in the passenger seat screams at me and says I’m lucky they can’t process me right now because their in car computer wasn’t working, but I’m in deep shit and they’ll come for me etc…. Man, I was really scared… told the story to a friend’s dad who was a „policía judicial“ with the Guardia Civil, and he told me he was going to take care of it, and indeed I never heard about the incident again.

So no, i didn’t really fight a ticket but kindly asked someone to tell someone else to forget what they saw, heh.

And no, I don’t drive like that anymore.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Yeah. Had a lawyer get one dismissed. Prepaid legal is the shit.

I once got caught doing 180mph on the motorway by an under cover on the M1 near Sheffield... Cop pulled me over and was talking smack saying my liscence was gone and my flashy car was going to get impounded yadda yada. Turns out when it came to court his dashcam wasnt actually recording and since the guy had a previous investigation ruled out of his favour for wrongly arressting someone for a similar offense the judge sided with me and I got off on technicality.

There was no actual evidence, and my lawyer was good.

If you live in the UK you know how lucky that was.

Yes I know, but I'd just bought my first ferrari and was a young asshole.

Yep fought one in court. I merged into traffic heading north and accelerated too quickly , before I knew it I had hit 75 in a 35. I started to slow down and that's when I noticed there was a motorcycle cop in the median, by the time I saw him I was only going around 40, but his radar had already clocked someone going 75 around the curve. He gave me the summons and my argument in court was basically that he was facing north, the same direction I was traveling. There's no way for him to know which car had actually clocked 75, by the time he had turned around I was only traveling 40.

I did once, back when I had a lot more free time on my hands to go through the trouble.

Mostly I did it to get the citation off my record, as it was like the 3rd speeding ticket in 2 years or something for me at the time so there was some consequence I think. Ended up having to burn a vacation day to go to court, but it was kind of an interesting experience.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

I've been out of the loop for a while on this - but is Holiday Inn really emailing out coupons that get you laid? Where do I sign up?

Oh you're lucky. Here in the states my brother's friend who's kind of an idiot, I know him he's an idiot, was doing 130 in his vette and the cops tried to pull him over. He decided he wasn't going to pull over and decided to cross state lines because he thought they couldn't chase you across state lines. Did I mention he's an idiot because they'll totally chase you across state lines. They caught him when he ran out of gas at which point the cops pulled him from the car and kicked him in the head because they were kind of upset.(Yeah, he was better off just pulling over.)

That is advanced stupidity.

That is someone that is so stupid that they circled back around the spectrum of intelligence to believe themselves to be the biggest brain in the room.

Kinda related. My boss just got a ticket in Georgia for “move over” violation.

$730!

Move over folks.

If you do fight it. Ask the question about the radar gun and the last time it was calibrated/ zeroed.
Had a buddy fight one, knew he wasn’t speeding. Asked for the date on the calibration/zeroing of the radar gun. It hadn’t been done in 4 years and was off on its reading by like 8mph.

What if it was by that bullshit "pacing" method. Cause I knew for a fact my guy straight up lied because I instinctually checked when the lights came on behind me and it was 10MPH lower than what he cited me. Just because he didn't like our interaction.
