Anyone here good with pixel graphics?

slayn

needs to show more effort.
I'm generally not one for blatant advertising so I just plan to do this once and hope its not against gaf rules so please don't hurt me. And seeing as gaf is the place I eventually plan to release this at, it kinda is for gaf.

Starting last fall I am the head of a group making a homebrew gba game. Its a group of CS people, so we have all the programming talent we need and we already have most of our gameplay ideas set but we are lacking in the artistic aspect.

Short of some weird turn of events that we would make money off of this and it would actually be legal to do so... this wouldn't be for money. The only compensation would be cheers of your greatness, your name on the credits, and we could probably send you porn and/or anime :o

What we would need is 240x160 simple backgrounds (this is a puzzle game so its basically a grid like area in the center with a background and time and score and such) as well as 16x16 sprites of a character and walls and trees and other such obstacles and blocks.

We do have someone that promised to make original music/sound effects for us. As to whether he will actually do any of that has yet to be answered. So if anyone had any interest in making original music/sound effects for our little puzzle game, that would also be extremely helpfull. Music would have to be in .s3m format. Sound effects can just be .wav files.

I'll also take this time to thank panajev for getting me interested in gba homebrew and for the great experiance of working with him on his project though it seems he has since stopped work on it in favor of ps2. If not for him my own group wouldn't exist in the first place ^_^

Anyone interested please PM and hopefully we can work togethor to make a game that gaf won't rip to shreds too badly =P

I've spent much of my time making games using ripped sprites and music and such with rpgmaker or my own stuff. I want one damn game that I can claim everything as being original dammit =P

Puzzle game

...

You're making Lumines!?

no... I'm sure I'm ripping off of somethign with my game ideas though i personally have never played a puzzle game identical to ours. Think more along the lines of lolo than that of tetris/lumines

right, i'm going to put the effort in to try and finish GBA Lumines...

between this and seeing Anoops Java version, it's got to be done.

McWild, more graphics please! :)

Was it me? :P

I don't have HAM on my comp anymore...but I can still do the s3m's according to specs, but can't test them myself.

It was great working with you too Slayn and I am glad to have worked on the GBA, especially because of the people I met doing so. I am sure your game will be really good, I remember a demo you made with orangish clouds and the credits passing by and the block-moving puzzle game. Played nice and showed potential.

I moved on PlayStation 2 stuff mainly because I felt the GBA project got stuck at that point in time, becuase without artists the GBA project had pretty much gone PUFF (technically I was supposed to only start engine work on the PlayStation 2 and then keep pushing the GBA game when more talent got together: especially more artists and we had a clear idea of what game we wanted).

I do not know if they work on the DS, but if they do I migth finally purchase a FLASH ROM kit for the GBA as it pissed me off a lot not to be able to run the games on the Hardware. PlayStation 2 Linux allowed me to run things on the Hardware at least.

I know the moment I do so SCE will release a PSP Linux kit or something like that, but who know more people might be interested on working on a PSP title :).

DCharlie, just keep working on the Java version ;).

Oh well, I will ahve to play-test it sometimes... POWER TO THE MASTER OF MAINFRAMES!!!!!!!!

yeah... that was always the problem with our gba game. Kitsune still owes me colomns!!!! ;P

The puzzle game we're making is the same basic idea as what you saw but a bit more complicated. I decided not to use what we had done previously so we built our own engine frlom scratch. I wanted it to be in C++ rather than C as HAM has gotten better with it and I wanted it to be object oriented. Already what we have is a lot better than what I had made previously so I'm happy. It runs a lot faster too. The experiance of the first demo though helped a ton in learning what not to do ;)

Now all the blocks move at the same time too, which makes it play much more smoothly.

I care enough this time around that we are going to finish it and have like a minimum of 50 levels or so with our without someone making the graphics for it. Its just that it would seem like such a better game in people's minds if it looked a lot better :(

I have an idea for graphics, an original character you could use. I'm just wondering exactly what needs to be made. Size and number of animations, etc. Send me a PM with specifications and I'll see if I have the time.
