I don't think this had been discussed before on GAF.

Does anyone here have ambitions of one day breaking into the film, or in general, entertainment industry?

Are any of you already on the inside?

I'm still in school, in my spare time I like to write short scripts and stories, I don't nearly use a camera as much as I should though.

I'm looking at going into some creative writing classes next year in college and after that, I'm hoping to find enough money to be able to go to a film school.

I'm also looking at getting a film related job next summer, maybe as an assistant on a local production?

Tell us about your current situation and ambitions :D

Just keep in mind that "Production Assistant" basically translates to "paid intern." You'll be doing a lot of grunt work. Pay is all over the chart, don't expect much from, say, cable TV.

I've been warming up to the idea of screenwriter as a viable career, but I can't bring myself to start writing anything ... at all. So, instead, i ponder and worry about the foregone conclusion that is my life, while spending my time in greatly beneficial ways like posting on this fucking message board. I never swing the bat.

Writing is fucking hard. Some people say that if it doesn't come to you, you're not meant to be a writer. I say fuck them.

Sometimes it'll be days, and countless pieces of music later before I can even write a single line of dialogue.

I've done some CG shorts. Lately I have been playing around with a Canon GL2 DV camera shooting establishing type shots and cutting together small sequneces. My big thing at the moment is to take the rough video and post processing it to look more like film and higher budget.

If you want in to the industry as a writer I imagine you just have to write write write until you put together something you really like and think you can sell. Getting an agent would probably help. Cameramen, cinematographers or directors, you just have to shoot shoot shoot and learn a shit load about cameras, lenses, post production, mounts, dollys, editing, etc. Short form is the easiest place to start.

I'm getting a pair of bachelor degrees right now, one in film. Then I'll head to film school. I wrote, directed and starred in plays in high school and made short comedic films at the time for class projects. Now I do student projects in the film club and I've done some work on small professional projects. I studied film in the UK last summer at the BFI and I'm in a screenwriting class now writing some stuff that I really, really like and intend on eventually shooting.

At the end of the year I'm going to be buying a $6-10k DVCAM, the necessary accessories and most likely either Avid's editing software or a pumped up Apple with Final Cut Pro. Not really sure which... but I'll probably need a new PC either way, and at the very least a massive harddrive. I plan on shooting a variety of shorts, submitting them to festivals and whatnot. I also want to do some experimentation with stop-motion animation; set up a corner of my apartment for that.

My main goal is to become a cinematographer. That's my real passion more than writing or directing. I'm keen on learning it all though, so that I can do things on my own and just take whatever jobs I can find in the meantime. I'm leaning towards getting Avid and really learning that, as I see jobs in that all that time. I write a lot of film criticism as well, and when I find the time I'd like to really prep some of that to get published.

Film is pretty much my life...

I worked a bit on some location shooting for a film doing set dressing, props and etc.

It was cool, but I didn't get to do the whole shoot because it was unpaid and some paying work came up.

I also am currently writing a script with a good friend of mine.

So, are you going to the Toronto Film Festival next week? :D

I can hook you up with a free ticket or two.
Huh...? I wish I could, but I have classes...

I heart sluts just left to go pursue a Master's in Film Production at Chapman University in Orange Count, CA. If he hits it big, he promised to make a film about GAF. OK, that last part was a lie, but wouldn't that be funny...

We seriously should put together a film about the history of GAF, the Opa fallout, etc. etc.

Maybe we could get someone to animate it?

Right now I'm an English/Film major at my college, but I'm not sure whether I want to be a filmmaker or scholar. If I go into production, my (obvious) goals for grad school would be USC or NYU (where I have some great connections).

I've always enjoyed films, but I'm not sure where my niche would be if I went into production. I've always been an excellent writer, but I also greatly enjoy photography and the technical aspects of filmmaking, as well.

The only "production-oriented" classes at my university are screenwriting, which I'm taking right now. I might even post my finished short screenplay on GAF if I'm proud of it toward the end of the year :)

I've been doing post producton sound work for about nine years now. Done most types of media but now work on prime time television. Used to work in film, but TV is nice cos you only work 9 months a year and still make more than most office slaves do year round :D

Only ambitions is to just keep working and enjoy my last week off before TV season starts.

I do background (extra work) part time, but I don't really have any desire to do anything else in the industry- save for getting a few acting credits in order to break into the union (and thus get a larger paycheck).

I'm in school for Character Animation right now, but I'm very interested in making a short film in the future. I've done animation shorts, a few hobby films, and written pages of my ideas into different film structures. So in the next year I want to write a full screenplay. Reading a couple of film books in the past few months has gotten me excited. :D
