Anyone here know anything about window AC units? I have an issue with mine every summer

Every summer when I put my window AC unit back in, for the first couple weeks when it's running it always makes this water-y sound. Like water is collecting in it and something keeps hitting the water and there are light splashy sounds coming from inside the unit. It also makes popping and crackling sounds. When this happens, I take the front cover off and see ice has formed in the front coils. I make sure the filter is cleaned, nothing has clogged up the unit and is well cleaned. The odd thing is, it seems to do this every summer when I first install it and then it will go away randomly. It does pop up on occasion here and there during the summer but usually only a few times here and there

I asked two people, one told me it sounded like the unit was clogged(it isn't) and the other said it sounds like I didn't tilt it enough to let the water drain. It's hard to tilt it in my window, immediately once I close the window to secure the unit, it pushes it back down and levels it out. Regardless, if that was the problem, wouldn't this issue persist throughout the entire summer and not just the first couple weeks and a few other times?

The unit is only a couple years old and it works well otherwise and there's no physical damage to it.

Anyone have an idea on what the issue might be and how I can prevent it this year. It's so fucking annoying being awakened in the middle of a deep sleep by loud popping and crackling sounds when the coils freeze up. Or when the splashing sounds start up.

Never had that issue but I’d try not to have the temp setting too low for a few times after first putting it in for the year.

I like the mobiles ones that sit on the floor and run a hose to the window. In window ones suck and look horrible.

sorry not very helpful

Usually when they ice up like that, it can mean it’s over running. It can either be a coolant issue, or the BTUs are not sufficient for the area you’re trying to cool so the energy saver doesn’t shut it off enough for thaw.

The initial liquid sound is usually the coolant that has been settled in the motor compressor and when the liquid sound goes away, that usually means it’s been mixed enough and became lighter and more gas like again.

Window units suck, better off to invest in at least a split fan and cooler unit. It's worth the investment as the world is going to keep getting hotter.

What are the outdoor temps like when you are running it? I don't have window units, but I had my AC evaporator coil freeze up a bit one night last year when it got colder out at night. I meant to turn it off before sleeping but forgot. It ran a little bit overnight and I had to run the blower fan only in the morning to melt a bit of frost off the coil.

I had one like that that collected water and had to drill out a hole in the bottom of it to drain water. The splashing you hear is the fan blades hitting the water when it gets too high.

The freezing up is probably because you are running the fan speed too low for the low temperature you are setting. If you have that thing blasting at the coldest temp, bump up the fan speed too.

Thanks for the input. Here is the unit I have:

See those are the only 2 settings I have on the left side. I usually put it on max temp and low cool, and then when it gets really hot I put it on medium cool.

It’s 8,000 BTUs, big enough for my bedroom which isn’t that big.

This room gets really hot very quickly though so maybe Enigma is on to something and it isn’t letting it thaw when it’s supposed to. As for the water, I’ll try tilting it more, not sure I’ll be able to.

I usually only put it in the window when it starts to get consistently in the mid 80s or higher, so I never let it run when it’s cool or just “warm” outside.
