Just curious.

If I go, it'll only be to photograph the crowds, and hopefully get some police violence on tape.

Well, I won't be joining them, but due to my nature of work (news business), I'm here at work right (right by Tavern On the Green) and will be on stand-by for if anything goes wrong...

I just don't understand the reason for all this fuss. Why Reps are insisting to have national convention in this City? Too crowded, Bush is not especially popular (in my opinion) in NYC and extra danger - especially something like Madison Square Garden, there are tons of trains going right underneath...

There are more than 5000 (I counted) PO's and Sgts on guard around the security perimeter, and that's not even funny. Right by the lincoln tunnel, and it will cause mucho problem on my commute yet alone poor LIRR riders... :(

nah. I'm just a mere pawn for execs. I sometimes create 3d maps, but mostly I'm a designer. Today, they called me in for the maps... (boring as hell, if you ask me.)

Right now, I'm working on 5 differnt rally routes around the city. whoa.. every day a different march/protest for next 5 days... The kicker is, called "the line", which is forming from all the way downtown wall st to MSG - but just for a brief minutes. (unemployed line).

I think by far, today's rally would be the largest...

Hmm.. anything more annoying than protestors? Let me guess... bush coming to the city for rep convention and blocking every block I go to with 10,000 cops? I think that might just do it... :)

Wonderful place to hold a political convention. NYC recently suffered a terrorist attack and a crippling power outage, how about giving the city a break? Opportunist morons

Protesting is great when done in a good way. Peaceful, cooperation with police, no disturbing the peace and a positive message are the ways to protest right.

The violent protesters (which hopefully are a minority) are the ones who need to stay home. Throwing bottles/rocks at the po-po, breaking windows, over turning cars and just plain violent behavior...then blaming the police for brutality. Hopefully this won't happen in NYC.

Answering police questions should be encouraged as long as you do not incriminate yourself. Know your rights.

Protest in designated areas only and walk along the directed route. Don't try to block traffic or chain yourself together in the middle of Times Square or something stupid like that.

Finally, if you are protesting have a positive message. Don't say shit like "I love New York...even more now that the World Trade Center is gone" ,"We support our troops...when they shoot their officers!" and "Violent insurrection in Iraq!" That last one essentially champions the death of American service men and women. All quotes were from a anti-war movement in San Fransico this past March.

I'm sure there will be people like this...please don't be one of them. And by the way, no matter how much some protesters might hate Bush...he is not a Nazi. When you see these people...and they will be there, look at them and feel shameful that they are protesting allong side you and giving you a bad name. Our country doesn't need protesting like that...and the really sad thing is that they will probably get the most coverage.

Be safe & have fun, I wish I could be there.

The problem with protesting is, it never stays peaceful. And in the end not one of those protesters is going to make a difference. I doubt Dick Cheney is going to head in to the convention, but see the masses outside and turn around and decide he has been living a lie and turn to a Democrat. If you're going to protest, it's "Cott" to be good! Whoos sorry, I'm just enjoying my Cott Premium Black Cherry Artificially Flavored Soda Pop.

I've been to some peaceful protests. You've just been proven wrong.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Man, we would have such a great nation if you had been around to convince these people:

I leave for NY (US Open, baby) on Monday, should arrive Tuesday evening. I've got tickets to Letterman on Wednesday, and have already been told to arrive even earlier for check-in, since they expect protestors outside of CBS that day.

So let me ask the resident NYers this...

Any tips for a tourist who will be taking a train from NJ every day into the city, and lots of travel on the subway? Will the convention/protest congestion make that kind of travel a nightmare? Will security checks have me emptying out my backpack every time I get to a station? Should I hop on buses instead?

No matter what, just avoid Penn Station. The thing is, the easiest and quickest way to get to the city from NJ would be Path Train. I'm not sure whether they'll allow the trains to go to Penn Station, so you might have to find out alternative course, using various subway lines. I'm afraid it will be pretty nightmarish to get into the city, but I'm sure there are alternative ways to get around. Sad part is that to go to LI or even Shea stadium, LIRR is probably the best and fastest way to get there, but LIRR all starts in Penn Station, whch, basically is MSG, where the convention is holding from Monday. Thus, nobody without any kind of credentials will be allowed around a couple blocks around the MSG, and I'm not sure of how trains would run.

Thanks for the tips. I'm hoping things calm down after Thursday. That'll give me 5 days to enjoy the city without the GOP mucking things up.

How about the kind of protests held in Yemen just before the invasion of Iraq? Have the thousands of people sit in the street in complete silence. It would be a stunning sight to see that in New York.

Yup, that's what I had planned. But this validation is nice. :D

My gf just took it this morning, no problemo, took her 30 minutes to get from the Village back to her place in Orange.
