5.5 hit around 8:40 and was centered just South East of Anza in the desert which is just North East of where I am. I was surprised that it woke me up since I've slept through 6.5's before.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- A moderate earthquake shook most of Southern California early Sunday, rattling nerves as well as some homes and businesses but there were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage, authorities said.

The magnitude-5.5 quake struck about 8:40 a.m. and was centered 20 miles south of Palm Springs, according to a preliminary report by the U.S. Geological Survey.

A dispatcher with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said she received dozens of calls about the quake but hadn't received any word about injuries or damage. In Los Angeles County, there also were no reports of damage.

Nadege Gelayen, assistant manager of Cafe des Beaux-Arts, a restaurant in nearby Palm Desert, said the quake lasted six to seven seconds and shook doors and plates.

"Nothing was broken. But it was pretty scary. It was a big one," Gelayen said. Charlotte Callahan, who owns the Calla Lily Inn in Palm Springs, said the quake had a rolling sensation that startled some out-of-town guests.

"I walked outside and we did have some guests outside, talking about the quake," she said. "They said, 'I didn't know you had those here!"'

The quake was felt as far west as Los Angeles and as far south as San Diego, 75 miles southwest of Palm Springs, where hundreds of scientists gathered for a diabetes conference.

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will.
I sure could use a vacation from this
Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks
Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any fucking time. Any fucking day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay.

Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any fucking time. Any fucking day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay.
Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still.
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits.
Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will cuz
I sure could use a vacation from this
Silly shit, stupid shit...
One great big festering neon distraction,
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.
Learn to swim.
Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be.
Learn to swim.
Fuck L Ron Hubbard and
Fuck all his clones.
Fuck all those gun-toting
Hip gangster wannabes.
Learn to swim.
Fuck retro anything.
Fuck your tattoos.
Fuck all you junkies and
Fuck your short memory.
Learn to swim.
Fuck smiley glad-hands
With hidden agendas.
Fuck these dysfunctional,
Insecure actresses.
Learn to swim.
Cuz I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
I wanna watch it go right in and down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away.
Time to bring it down again.
Don't just call me pessimist.
Try and read between the lines.
I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend.
I wanna see it all come down.
suck it down.
flush it down.

I didn't even know about this until now. I was expecting an earthquake early this morning because our horses were acting spooked and running around in the early hours (like 5:00 AM), but I never felt so much as an aftershock any time at all today.

We're pretty sheltered from earthquakes out here. The only time that I recall ever noticing an earthquake was the time that one hit at/near Bakersfield. I could tell that there was an earthquake at the time because our pool's water was sloshing back and forth a bit, which made no sense until I saw the news. I guess I should consider my location to be a lucky one.

Yea, I was surprised it woke me up as well. I ALMOST slept thru that one in 1994, but was woken up by my mom asking if I'm okay DURING the damn thing. We probably woke due to the lack of an earthquake here in so long. We're lacking a big one. That way people on the west side can move out, rent can drop and I can move out there :D

I was sleeping on the beach and didn't notice it.

I've been in LA for 8 years and have only really felt one earthquake.

They're saying all these small 6.5's and 5's over the last couple years are releasing any pressure that would lead to a "big one" and as such it probably won't happen.

I slept through it.

Woke up and saw a couple of my display pieces had fallen over, so I knew something had happened, but didn't hear about an earthquake until hours later.

While scientists say nowhere in the world is truly earthquake proof , I live in an area that hasn't had any noticable quake since quakes were recorded as far as I know...

If anyone knows of a website that shows you this stuff that'd be cool.

Interesting it is to note that these smaller yearly quakes prevent a big one from hitting on the west coast anytime soon. What should that tell you about other fault lines though... I'd say that Sumatra quake on boxing day last year let off some steam from the whole damn planet.
