For the last day I've been tirelessly trying to get this hdd enclosure to work properly (for my 160 gb Seagate). I have triple checked to make sure everything was connected correctly, but each time I let windows re-install the USB Mass Storage driver the following occurs:

"Found new Hardware
USB Mass Storage Device"

Minutes later:

"A problem occurred during hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work properly." I tried to use it anyways to see if it would work... It doesn't.

The specific model of the enclosure is CompUSA 3.5'' USB 2.0 HD Enclosure (SKU 312100). I'm running Windows XP with Service Pack 1.

The CompUSA drivers site (fmi.compusa.com) does have a driver for it, but it is intended for Windows 98 only, as XP is supposed to do it automatically.

I don't know what to do.
Thanks in advance for the help.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
Does the manual indicate at any point in it who the actual maker of the device is? IF so check the manufacturer's web page. Oh wait it's an FMI product..... ugh... let me see if I see anything.

EDIT: Don't see a thing... no tech support #'s in the manual?

It's your USB port or the enclusore companies fault, who ever you want to blame. There is no set standard for USB, so some companies use different drivers, etc. Your port and the enclosure simply don't like each other. If you actually tried to hook it up to another pc, it probably would work. The best thing to do though is maybe return it and try a different brand. Of if you do have another PC, try it with that one.

Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
I have given up on getting USB 2.0 speeds on my laptop.

You can avoid your problems by going in to device manager, right clicking on the USB hub section and tell it to not let you know if a problem occurs or something like that. I'm on a 2K box at the moment. I recently had to do that on one of my laptops.

It is already formatted. I'm trying to get my copy of Contra Shattered Soldier (I own it, thank you very much. My ps2 does not boot blue discs anymore) on to it.

All I'm trying to do is get HDL_dumb to recognize it, because you cannot install it the old fashioned way.

Welp, I figured it out.

The problem? A piss-poor pcb slot. I had to take it out and really push hard to get the pins in correctly. That was the problem. XD

Thanks everyone. *big sigh of relief*

What motherboard or card that has the USB2.0 ports? I have the same problem with my external enclosures. While everything worked perfectly with my laptop, my desktop would be picky about which external HDD it can use.
