Anyone remember this? Get Medieval!

Last night I dug out this old chestnut and gave it another whirl. I haven't played it since.. oh.. probably 1998 when it came out.

Get Medieval is a postmodern Gauntlet clone that tries to lampoon the character stereotypes made famous by Gauntlet: the wizard, the elf, the barbarian, and the knight.

The barbarian sends up the most famous barbarian--Conan--using a lot of the same riffs as the SNL's "Hans and Franz" skits. The elf is a stuck-up smartass with a severe superiority complex. The swordsman is actually a woman with an inferiority complex. The wizard thinks she's the hottest thing in the world. The intro video features an MST3K-esque commentary, which is rather hilarious (the video itself is low-res 320x200 CGI).

Unfortunately, the humor falls flat about 10 minutes into the game. The same voice samples get used over.. and over.. and OVER.. again. Then there's the dungeon voice that sounds like the Quake 3 announcer.

The game itself is, well, Gauntlet with fancy graphics. There are lots of enemies, but they're all equally stupid (although some of them have projectile attacks). The projectiles can kill the other monsters, so you can reduce a horde to just a few monsters just by pacing in front of the door and letting them kill each other.

Bottom line: While the main hook of the game gets old quick, the voices can be turned off and the gameplay is arcadey fare. I give it 6.5 girlymen.
