[Werewolf Jones]

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot was pretty trash. It had some minor laughs and it was good to see a lot of returning Askewniverse characters like Brody, but something felt really off about it overall. Smith gets more SJW with every film it seems, this movie is chock full of lesbians and diversity casting and jokes about cis males, wise 18 year old drug addicted kinksters with dildo collections who roll their eyes at the fuddy duddy's who think this is out of place. There's a scene where Joey Lauren Adams basically berates Kevin SMith for having the audacity to write Chasing Amy in the dark ages of the 90's because he's a white male. Smith wrote this script lol.

I think the core thing it was missing was the lack of homophobic slurs EVERY scene in the original they were saying someone is a cock sucker or alluding to someone being gay on the low in an offensive way. I actually miss it since it was funny. Of course it also had:



What did I watch recently?

Underwater: It was good, I actually liked T.J. Miller in it. It's p much the scenario of Alien (sort of) but underwater but it all worked and comes together nicely, I can see why Fox has no faith in it since it would be hard to market but it's by no means a bad movie.

Young Torless: A movie from the 60s set in a German boarding school, the main character is a passive observer of first hand cruelty and manipulation from students to another and isn't here nor there about it. I gotta watch more older content cuz this movie was small as fuck in scope and had pacing. Remember pacing?

Us: I've never seen a movie waste concepts as badly as this. Seeing it be praised also has me scratching my head, if it was made by white people it'd be getting 5/10s which it rightfully should. The core idea behind it is good but as soon as it tries to explain itself it just fucking falls apart and Get Out was actually good. Whoops.

Ready or Not: Pretty surprisingly good thriller that constantly has you underestimating how savage it's gonna get right down to the last minute. Didn't expect much from it and went in blind outside of knowing the basic plot, it was worth it.

I've seen many people praising Train to Busan along the years but never watched it since I'm not into zombie stuff. I have no idea why I decided to give this a go today and DAMN! Movie is pretty good indeed.

If you enjoy zombie stuff watch it asap if you haven't. If you don't, give it a chance as well.

Now I'm hyped for the sequel!

I watched American Factory documentary - was really good. I thought it would just be about a factory but the dynamic between the American and Chinese was the real meat of it and it was interesting to learn a bit more about their culture.

Shame we don't get many fun comedy movies like this anymore.

lol i remember this movie like it was yesterday even tho it came out in 2004 16 years ago when I was in HS cruise is the man never cared for him when I was younger but he has showed that he has legs still in the game making blockbusters very impressive.

The Three Stooges Meet Hercules

I have a soft spot for this movie. Scenes like the one where Hercules straight up chucks a lion feature just the right amount of absurdity which makes me howl with laughter. Curly Joe holds his own here, although he'll never be Curly or Shemp. Also Vicki Trickett is a straight up dime piece.

I love old Hollywood starlets.

If you enjoy the Three Stooges, you'll enjoy this. It doesnt quite top some of the more classic shorts, but it certainly never wears thin during its slapstick filled running time of 89 minutes either.

Horror of Dracula

Another oldie but a goodie. These old Hammer flicks always make me wish classic gothic horror was still en vogue. They just dont make em like this anymore.

Horror of Dracula once again gripped me right from the getgo with its brooding atmosphere, and the special effects still hold their own. There isnt much in the way of plot to be found in Horror of Dracula, but when a movie is this skilled in delivering the goods, that's not very much necessary either. I could watch these films ad nauseum and never grow tired of them. I'm a simple man.

Jamie Foxx should have died. There's no way he's flipping a cop over, handcuffing him to the car, playing hero and killing a trained assassin. I'll never ever get over how Mann ended that otherwise great movie.

I've run out of new stuff I wanted to watch, so I think I'm gonna go back and watch some films I always wanted to see but just never got around to like Silence, Short Term 12, and the latest Spiderman.

I hadn't watched this for years and it's still a fun film to watch and I still get a bit emotional towards the end. Certainly a lot of stupid stuff happens but Bay is much more restrained here than in his newer films which is a good thing. Will happily keep watching this for years to come.

North By Northwest - blu ray
Wifey decided she wanted to open her eyes to more classic films because she usually just disregards them. So I showed her this film and it is a great little Hitchcock film. IMO the first half is much more interesting than the second half. I actually wished that they kept the mystery going for longer. It also finishes extremely quickly. You have the final nerve racking scene and then it's almost like if you blink, you'll miss the final ending shot.

Whiplash - blu ray
Frickin amazing film by Damien Chazelle, JK Simmons and Mles Teller are frickin incredible. JK Simmons is bloody scary in this. The final scenario was breath taking. Not a single bad thing to say about this film in my books. Movie is about an aspiring drum player and the teacher is an absolute arsehole, just in case you aren't aware.

I like most of Hitchcock's Hollywood movies, but I've always prefered Vertigo as my favorite. I also think North by Northwest might go on for a little too long. Psycho is great also, but feels very dated compared to a lot of his others and other modern suspense movies.

I watched Birds of Prey for some reason. At first I thought it might be better than people were making it out to be, but I quickly got very bored while watching.

It kinda reminded me of the Batman and Robin movie where everything was a cheap plastic looking set with way too much color. It just had a very amateur vibe going on throughout like it was extremely low budget and maybe some inexperienced people were in charge.

It didn't help that so much of the acting was awful. The singer chick was really bad, the pudgy Asian pickpocket girl looked like she was acting for the first time, Ewan Mcgregor tried to go all out and it fell flat, Margot Robbie tried and it fell flat, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead looked like she regretted taking the job before the the camera even started rolling. Oh yeah, and Rosie Perez was in it.

The main takeaway seemed to be about how women are the ones actually doing things while men get all the credit. They beat us over the head with it. Harley was the smarts behind Joker's plans, as they explicitly explain. Rosie Perez is the one doing the actual police work, as they show us in at least 3 separate instances, but the black male chief gets the credit. Her partner even attempts to "mansplain" at her in an early scene and she shuts him down! Girl power!

I recently watched Birds of Prey too. Avoid!!! Ewan Mcgregor's "American" accent was fucking agonizing and the soundtrack was one of the most horrendous in cinema history, especially the cover songs.

Bright spots: Margot Robbie (if that was her and not a stunt double) is quite the gymnist, and casting for Black Canary was pretty great, despite the change from the comic.

Recent good movie I saw? Blues Brothers from 40 years ago. Comic genius and an all star cast!

Onward and Parasite.

Went into both blind, both were excellent. I’m surprised Parasite lived up to the hype and for Onward I saw no hype for it whatsoever but it was pretty decent too.

Bloodshot is the kind of unpretentious flick that I wish would be made more often. Looks good, has a simple fun story with engaging twists, has cool action scenes and lacks any postmodern self-aware crap.

Just watched Minority Report again (via Netflix). Been awhile since I last saw it. Loved this movie when it came out, probably watched it at least 8x in my late teens/early 20s.

I still love it. It holds up well. It was always visually striking, to me anyway, and while it may not be on par with the best effects and CG of today’s releases, I still think it looks great.

Harlem Nights - Been on my list for years, but just finally got around to it. Outstanding, its both a great gangster movie and very humorous. Feels fresh in that crowded field by focusing on Black gangsters instead of more typical Italian mobsters. Highly recommended.

I thought I had seen this film, once I started watching it I realised I hadn't actually seen it. The movie I was thinking of was Outbreak. This movie Contagion was very boring. I wouldn't recommend it.

Breakfast at Tiffany's - Prime (Starz)
Great classic film, this time my wife had seen it and I had't. I never realised how gorgeous Audrey Hepburn was until now, she is mesmerizing and she is a great actress. The film had much more deviancy than I was expecting. At the end of the day it is a love story but you wouldn't think it for the first half. Will need to buy on blu ray or UHD when it's released on that.

Watched the film “Annihilation” last night

It was recommended and I didn’t think it would be so great. Gave it a try because Natalie Portman was the star, and it was Suspense/Horror after all. Love that genre

But anyway, by far the most bizarre film I have ever seen. Actually very much exceeding expectation in that regard. The film is truly something different. It’s based off a trilogy book series, but the film was made when only the first one was out. It’s largely about, without spoiling anything, very strange phenomena

It held my attention very firmly. I found myself watching very intensely with full attention, taking in everything at key events. There are some disturbing themes and events. I was shocked at times with the content. The author must have really been creative with his work in the actual book

It’s highly intriguing, will make you think, it will have you glued to the screen multiple times, and the suspense level is very high. I didn’t enjoy the director’s choices regarding soundtrack though. Thought he did a fairly poor job in that regard

Really makes you wonder about the unknown, possibility, and the sheer horror of the fact that in an infinite reality, anything can potentially become a reality. In this case, the movie displays something very alarming, very traumatizing, and truly pokes at our vulnerability towards the unknown. VERY STRANGE, BIZARRE film. I’m telling you guys, if you give it a try, you will see what I’m talking about. It’s not great, just pretty good I guess. I’ll give it a solid 7/10. Made me think about things so that’s what I like about it the most. That, and it was a very daring movie in its ways

Midsommar was a $.99 rental on iTunes. I liked Hereditary a lot (that family confrontation scene at the dinning table is one of my favorite scenes of recent memory) even if the ending felt undeserved. Aster tends to get remarkable performances from his actor and I really enjoyed Florence Pugh's performance (she has a wonderful raspy voice). I liked the movie overall but it isn't without issues. The digital and practical effects were a mixed bag (any time Dani's hands or feet were enveloped by grass it looked really amateurish, ditto for some of the shots of the cliff ritual).

Spoiler: Speaking of the ritual:

Shock over practicality. The woman jumps of a few hundred foot suicide cliff to land on stone foundation the size of twin mattress and the husband misses, mangling his legs and allowing for the mallet scene where the three cultists finish him off. From a practicality standpoint, that stone foundation would be much, much larger to avoid the need of the cleanup crew. It's just a gross out for the sake of gross out, which is okay for what the movie is going for but seems completely idiotic for a ritual so longstanding. That framing rubbed me the wrong way and slightly off-put me throughout the rest of the flick.

The end ritual...man, fuck being burned alive...that is all.

I actually really liked Hereditary a lot more then Midsommar. I agree about Hereditary's ending though. But it was still a tense ride throughout the film regardless.

Midsommar was just..... ugh, I've already gone into Midsommar. Florence Pugh did give a great performance. IDK Midsommar felt like it was super flashy with style over substance where Hereditary was the opposite with it being grounded in a familial drama. For instance you mentioned the dinner table conversation in Hereditary and that's because Hereditary had some great dialogue scenes that were memorable. Where Midsommar focused on these long take shots for rituals that had zero dialogue, the problem was that the dialogue outside those scenes was just not very good at all.

I finally watched Captain Marvel & Onward on the LP’ Disney Plus. Captain Marvel was more entertaining than I thought it would be but I could only stomach about 30 minutes of Onward.

Knives Out - blu ray
My wife and I loved this at the cinemas. Watched it again with my mum, my sister and her partner and they all enjoyed it as well. It was fun hearing my sister and her partner trying to work things out and they did work mostly everything out before it was revealed at the end. Easily one of the best murder mysteries made.

They Live - blu ray
I had never seen this film but the internet and Carpenter fans love it so I bought the new 4K release by Studio Canal on a whim. My sister and her partner eventually fell asleep but my wife and I were highly entertained by this highly original (in the 80's) film. It was so damn funny and I couldn't work out if it was intentionally funny or if it's just a bad film funny. The acting is obviously below par but damn it has some good lines.
"Lifes a bitch, and now she's on heat."
And it contains one of the greatest fight sequences ever in a back alley. I'm actually pretty sure I had seen that scene on Youtube in the past but it wasn't that great without any context. Watching it as part of the film, holy moly.

Tropic Thunder - blu ray
Thread on GAF made me want to watch it and it's still fucking hilarious. One of the best comedies ever made IMO.
Tom Cruise is so damn good.
Downey Jr is so damn good.
SO FUNNY.

Just remembered that we watched this also. That's how bad it is, so forgettable.
I only wanted to watch it because Camila Mendes is hawt in Archie but it wasn't worth the pain. It's a thriller mystery type film but the husband character is dumb and also the plot is dumb.
Avoid at all costs.

I really liked it, although I roughly remembered the main story beats from when I saw the anime as a kid

Definitely the best Anime movie

I think it would have done a lot better if Alita looked more human. Although you get used to the effect eventually, there are a lot of moments where you notice it not looking quite as good.
