Anything new on The Hobbit becoming a movie?

Just watched Two Towers again today and man Jackson did a great job. The whole world is so well done. Got me thinking, any news at all if The Hobbit will come to film and if Jackson will get to do it? I'm wondering if greed over the potential money this thing has will prevent it from becoming a reality...

I heard they had already signed McKlellan to it (or however you spell his name)....Gandolf. Who could they cast as Bilbo?

My pick: Gary Coleman.

Gandolf: "The way is harsh and weary, young Bilbo Baggins..."
Frodo: "What you talkin' bout, Gandolf?" *stare at camera. insert canned laughter.*

It will never, in a billion years, happen.

New Line Cinema owns the rights to produce The Hobbit as a movie. That's great, right? Nope. They can produce the movie but they cannot distribute it.

MGM/UA owns the ditribution rights to The Hobbit and they have just been bought by Sony who is not budging on the rights at all. There's a rumor that Sony wants the production rights to The Hobbit themselves so they can turn it into a "Sony" character to advertise "Sony" products like they did with Spider-Man.

I'd still guess that it'll happen eventually... there's just too much money involved for the studios not to reach a compromise of some sort. It'll take years and years, though. Though maybe I'm just optimistic. Now, if Warner Bros had gotten MGM, things would be very, very different...

I don't think McKellan has signed for the Hobbit, but he has indicated he would return as Gandalf should Peter Jackson direct the film, and Jackson has said he wants to do and the two studios should get the deal done. I could see them eventually splitting the costs of production and of course the profits, but it could be some time before that happens.

BTW, Christopher Tolkien would never agree to let Sony whore out any aspect of his father's vision. The Tolkien estate is obviously worth millions, but could be worth a lot more if he didn't safe guard the property, which he does, generally, for the best. It was rumored that he was against the films at first, but of course he now thinks they hold his father's vision well.

Also, anyone seen Peter Jackson lately? The dude has lost A TON of weight. I saw him last week on the AFI Salute to George Lucas, and I wouldn't even have known who he was.

He didn't start ballooning up until after The Frighteners.

The Hobbit is 100 times better than any of the three books. I'm sure a movie will get made. It's a guaranteed 100 million dollar movie.
