as a casual Smash viewer, I still dont understand why players hang on the ledge.

what benefit is there? I've seen so many suicides off of it

PeePee's Marth is fucking legit man. I like watching M2K's more when he's on, but PeePee has the consistency free.

OH. MY. GOD.

M2K vs MANGO?

High risk, high reward. You suicide if you're not good enough or not careful. Do it for the gimps, edge guard, and aerial game.

You have to consider, just like with fighting games and the corner, is not easy to get back to the center of the stage safetly. THere is an oponent that is trying ot kill you so you really need to pick the perfect moment to get in.

The simplest answer is it's the barest minimum for a recovery. The extended answer is there are tons of metagames that come from it. Since only one person can hang on to an edge, it's used offensively to keep someone from returning if they can't land on stage or set up offense on someone coming out of landing lag when they do manage to land on it. It's also used defensively to bide for time or create approaches back onto land that won't get intercepted by someone chilling on the ground and anticipating your return. This is also amplified since you're temporarily invincible during the earliest part of the ledge grab.

There's more to it and the dynamics change depending on a character to character basis especially when you take things like wall jumps and tether recoveries (Samus' Grapple Beam, Link's Hookshot) into account.
