Remember when Apple lost big to Qualcomm and had to pony up $4.5 billion?

Apple was a little miffed about that.

Approximately 2,200 Intel employees will join Apple, along with intellectual property, equipment and leases...

Combining the acquired patents for current and future wireless technology with Apple's existing portfolio, Apple will hold over 17,000 wireless technology patents, ranging from protocols for cellular standards to modem architecture and modem operation.

So they'll be using them in their next iPhones?

I think the short-term goal is to boost its patent arsenal against Qualcomm. Apple does prefer to produce its own parts where it can, so I think it intends to get to a place of building its own modems. Won't happen by next year, though.

Some people whinge about Disney buy movie properties. But I'll whinge about this because it seems like this could actually impact things in a monopoly kind of way. Does this mean regular PC's will no longer have access to Intel CPUs??

*EDIT*
oooh
Modems.
