i'm just not an apple person, but the laptop was a gift so i can't complain that much. i much prefer working on my roommate's laptop(windows) while i'm away.

Why not just a regular 2-button mouse with a wheel?

That's what I use on my Powerbook, and I don't think I'd ever want to give it up.

Apple rocks on so many UI issues, but sometimes they seem retarted.
I know what you mean, but I'm getting really used to the ctrl-click thing, and the only thing that i miss on this otherwise perfect mouse is the wheel. I KNOW Apple's gonna put something touch-sensitive on their mice in the future to sort that out, it just makes sense for their aesthetic.

Well they say some people like a challenge.

As for mice. If you want a mouse that is functional (two buttons, wheel) that still looks nice try www.macmice.com I am getting one of these for christmas. I've heard good things about them.

Or tell people around here how much you want for it. I'm sure you can take that money and go buy a Windows laptop with the proceeds pretty easily and someone who does want a Mac can join the mac community.

Here's my issue. My iBook has been great, but its been a bit sluggish as of late. I don't believe I'm running more applications that before, but it just takes longer for somethings. Anything I should do? I've been thinking about adding ram, but I wouldn't even begin to know where to look.

I've been thinking about buying some extra ram for my iBook too, but how do you install it? Does the ram come with instructions? Cause it seems like apple doesn't want anyone but apple touching the inside of this thing.

And I can't believe how sluggish NOLF runs on this (1ghz). Maybe it's just on their end...

"good" stores would be your local Apple store, Compusa, and maybe some speciality store like Frys. Otherwise its easier to just buy online.

One thing that's obvious about the mac game situation is that they don't believe in discounts. What I found was an oddity. Usually, you'll see something that goes for 9 to 19 bucks on a PC go for 50 on a mac.

Otherwise, the Apple Store and CompUSA have the best selections.

anybody??

I haven't used Cocktail and I just started using Macaroni and got it registered, so I can't compare the two, but so far, Macaroni seems to be running great. It's already done all the maintenance tasks with no problems or noticable effect on my PowerBook.

As for VLC (this is the VLan Player right?), I've only used it sparingly on my PC, but if you're having problems playing .wmv files you can just use Windows Media Player for the Mac: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13112. I've never had any problems with it on my PB so far.

Sorry I couldn't be more help but I don't really use Cocktail or VLC. And just to add a new, neat little program I found today via Macnn, here's iBatt for those of you curious about your laptop battery capabilities and status: http://www.raynersoftware.com/ibatt/.

There's an app called Onyx that is like Cocktail, but it's free. It's got a perfect rating (5 stars). I don't remember what Cocktail is like since I uninstalled it a while ago, but I know that Onyx is comparable. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20070

As for VLC, it should play most things, except for movies that use the WMV3 codec. I believe that is WMP9 exclusive or something, so you'll need the official Windows Media Player 9 for the Mac to watch it. You can get that at Microsoft's mac site (http://www.mactopia.com).

from what i hear....

www.acquisitionx.com. There you go, try it. It's a great P2P program as far as design goes and integration is top notch, and technically, it's free -- but if you don't pay or register it, you'll be buggered with reminders to do so. It's $17 for a single user or $27 for a family pack. I don't use P2P that often so I have yet to really spring for it, but I can definitely vouch that's it a good program; I prefer it to Poison.

I'd also recommend you add versiontracker.com to your bookmarks list. Excellent place to go to look for things.

I agree with this 100%

That site has saved my arse so many times.

Mac The Ripper: A great tool for backing up DVDs. And yes, I actually use this for legit back ups, as it's a lot easier than lugging a DVD to watch on the laptop.

Okay, cant post a new topic so I'm going to try this. I want to rip a few DVDs so I don't need to bring the discs with me. I've tried mac the ripper and extracted the dvd files, now how can I watch the movies on my computer? Is there a way to convert them to avi?

just open the video folder from your dvd player prog..

Here are some more software reccomendations from me.

The first three can all be found at www.iconfactory.com

iPulse: This is an awesome little system monitor that runs on your desktop and shows all sorts of cool stats about your system's performance.

Pixadex: This is sorta like iPhoto, except it's used to keep track of any and all system icons you download.

CandyBar: This works with Pixadex and lets you change the icons of pratically ANYTHING super easy. It'll even change icons inside programs (like the buttons in Mail.app).

And here's one more, find it on versiontracker.com

Measuring Cup: Keeps track of recipes, pretty hand if you're into cooking.

It's pretty easy, actually. The manual that came with your iBook should have info on it. Or if you've lost your manual - http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/ibook/0221682iBookG4UG.pdf

I added memory to mine when I first got my machine... the only thing you really need is a tiny screwdriver (like the kind you'd use to repair glasses) to unscrew the RAM shield.
