Wii-U is still technically current gen.

The main problem with WiiU is that it offers NOTHING except a tablet over the 360/PS3. OS/Services, the WiiU isn't even in the same ballpark.

We will see a huge uptake in sales when the next consoles come out... probably a lot larger than most expect.

NPD maintains a Canadian database separate from the US. Outside of hockey, games in Canada generally sell at around 8-10% of US.

8 years is just a too stretched console generation, and both consoles already peaked

Sony and Microsoft would keep as long as possible the price high, because of net profit

Pricedrop would happen only after or near the release of new hardware, and just for a better positioning.

Expecially for X360 and X3
if you note X360 was released 8 years ago @ 299 for core sku ( 399$ premium )
today is just 100$ less.. of course Microsoft revised the hardware ( with more features ) and/or added Kinect or some bundled games, but the price point is still high.

X3 won't release with a too high price point, would cause another " wait until first price cut " they just need to cut some X360 skus, ( like keeping just a 4GB version) with an entry level pack ( kinect included @ 149$ or something similar ) and phase out others skus

Given the handhelds and WiiU are new, and PS360 are 7/8 years old. No. To say PS360 are in trouble is laughable.

I'm not saying they are going to sell as poorly as Vita and Wii U, but I'd say a contraction in the overall ecosystem is looking increasingly likely for next-gen. Software is struggling too, and there's little indication that the AAA game makers are looking to change strategy. We'll see them continue to gouge the hardcore gamers with $60 games and horse armor. They may have little choice, with the expense of next generation consoles being a roadblock to F2P gaming.

If Nintendo were "smart" in this sense, they'd lose a lot of money and still get beat.

Their best bet for Wii U, and it's a slim one, is to come up with a piece of uber-compelling software from their stable of developers. You could reduce the Wii U to $100 right now and it wouldn't be selling gangbusters. People aren't sold on the tablet controller and there's almost nothing to buy on it.

More likely, they'll crank out a lot of their usual bestsellers, THEN lower the price, make enough money to keep Wii U from crippling the company, and take another shot in a few years with new hardware.

This. A price drop without any noteworthy games would only boost them for a week or two, and not by too much. At this point it is clear that Nintendo is sitting back and waiting for the second half of the year to hit. This first half is 100% written off in their minds.

It depends on how much money they make on the PS3 and 360 versus their new consoles.

Hence the dilemma.

Ultimately, we're looking at severe contraction and several developers/publishers crumbling unless a no-brainer subsidized upgrade purchase model is offered by Microsoft and/or Sony as well. Get the next-gen systems out there on contract models for $299 and you won't cripple your growth options so badly by dropping the 360/PS3 prices as well.

I can't imagine the vita being over 10 thou. As I posted in last months npd, I literally can't find a vita at Walmart, target, or bestbuy. For a entire month none of these stores replenished its stock.

I will say soul sacrifice at launch at best buy had 10 copies after I bought mine. As of Saturday they were out.
