So......what's up with the UK?

Certainly looks like something to be proud of.
If I was the person in charge of getting that financed and built I would be really proud too. It must take a lot of skill and talent to get something that ugly greenlit.

It certainly looks revolting in photographs.

I mean, when he asked for twenty-two million pounds in a recession, and showed his concept sketches, didn't anyone think that maybe they could do something more palatable?

And yet no mention of the world's tallest man appearing in that last photo. He's taller than the building!

It's like someone put their hand into a box of assorted lego pieces and built a tower out of whatever pieces they got in the order they got them.

But love it or hate it
I think they're going to have a tough time finding anyone (excluding blokeo who designed it) in that first camp. Marmite this is not.

WTF is the purpose of that stupid shit?
we're hoping that the great arch-raven of the northlands will make its nest in it and remedy our impoverished land with its bounty of giant diamond encrusted eggs.

osborne's already factored it into the budget.

I don't mind the design, but jesus, is that CG mockup demonstrative of the actual location? Its like they didn't put any thought into placement or design of the environment around it.

I doubt it.

Unless someone built a Tienamen Square replica in London and didnt tell me.

The fuck? How the hell did anyone think this would be a good idea? I seriously thought it was some kind of insane roller coaster at first, but it's just insane looking?

WTF Brits

it's out in the assend of stratford. imagine that sight but scattered with orphaned blocks of concrete and a couple of abandoned jcbs, a short walk from the likes of hackney wick - a place that makes chernobyl blush.

Most confusing sentence I've read all day

By the looks of it it is, as that's the Olympic swimming pool behind it

That seems like a problem I see more and more frequently in modern design: the design of a piece in isolation, without more then a cursory consideration of how it fits into its surroundings.

Oh God.

Another reason to put ahead my plan for building a wall in place of the M25.

The finished result is different to the mock-up. The stairs are more even, with no variation to the spiral and the observatory at the top is totally different - a lot narrower and less impressive.

They've taken a lot of the whimsy and organic nature out of the design, which is why the mock up looks ten times better than the finished product.

In fact it now looks like an airport control tower.

Agree with you about the stairs they don't look anywhere like as good as the mock up, though the observation deck is clearly a long way from finished so it could end up good

An engineer got a hold of it.

But jesus, this thing, at less than 400ft it the tallest structure in the UK? You don't have any broadcast towers?

I believe it's actually tallest sculpture or whatever and the OP got the wording messed.

Do you really think there's nothing over 400ft in Britain?

Of course, London has that weird egg shaped building and others.

We've got loads of structures far bigger than this, someone in this thread even posted a render of London's tallest skyscraper the shard, which'll be over 1000ft when its finished soon
