So I finally got the Milk Chan DVD from those those bitch ass peeps at deep discount dvd... (they took forever to send me my shit).... To my surprise the DVD cases are REALLY nice.. They are clear, noticeably sturdier than most cases blockbuster films come in, and it even comes with reversible cover art. Is this just dependant on the type of Anime I got, or is it the same with every DVD from ADV?

It's totally dependent on the show, as is the case with almost every studio releasing anime on DVD these days.

Oh okay... I thought it may have been like they do movies (where certain studios have certain looks to their packaging) This is the first "Anime" I've ever purchased. Cool, at least I knw what to expect from the rest of the Milk Chan series.

The typical anime way is to release the series or movie first in a boring generic case, then later release two, maybe three, special collectors edition cases or compilations...perhaps with a free t-shirt or sticker, and then charge three times what it's worth. Hmm, I suppose that's true of alot of movies these days, but with anime, things always seem to cost just a wee bit more.

Anime releases cost more due to the fact that overall sales are nowhere close to what your average Hollywood film will end up doing in it's first month. Since ADV/Bandai/Geneon/etc will never sell as many copies of one of their titles in comparison to "Generic Hollywood film 348", they have to charge more. However, we are beginning to see prices drop on certain studio's titles. I've been getting Ghost in the Shell SAC for $14.95 a volume (still not that great when you consider each season of the show will end up costing me $105 for 7 volumes, meaning that the full 52 episodes will go for $210), things are getting better.

While I'm sure a decreased amount of overall sales accounts for some of the price increase, I suspect it's much more the result of them charging an obscene price for a niche product because they know obsessive fans will still buy it. I've seen single discs from certain series cost upwards of $30, and contain maybe 3 or 4 22-minute episodes. That's absurd. Thank goodness for Netflix and equivalent services...um, I mean, I guess. ;)

The nice thing is, you should never have to pay the MSRP of $30 for any title. ADV, Bandai, Manga and most other studio's titles can be purchased for $17 online. Geneon's discs have the most expensive retail fees, but you can still get them for $22 a pop.

If you're paying $30+ for anime, it's your own fault.

Well, I'm talking about prices I see as I walk through Fry's or other places that sell alot of anime. I don't think I'd pay $30 for ANY DVD, anime or otherwise. I've blown a fair bit of money on some anime series in my time, but the average college student just can't afford to really be an anime connoisseur unless he or she, ah, cheats a little.
