I usually chat on #ga on IRC during my work hours because there's not exactly much else to do (I work at a university). I just came back from a 2 week vacation, though, and found my computer ghosted & upgraded from Win 2000 to Win XP Pro. Apparently, the IT department was trying to install a color printer on my machine when I was gone, and ended up fouling up the process so badly that they had to completely reformat my machine. :lol
This was all well & good until I tried re-installing Trillian so I could log onto IRC... Once I got up and running with all my IM programs (which still work fine), I found myself unable to connect to IRC at all. I tried connecting through the Java chat on Planetgamecube & that refused to connect as well, even though I unblocked the programs in the standard XP Firewall.
So, I tried rebooting my computer, and everything worked. I was able to get onto IRC through both Trillian & PCG's page... for a few minutes. About 3 minutes after my computer rebooted, the connection was lost again, and it wouldn't work unless I rebooted...
Any clue what kinda firewall would work this way & if there's anything I can do to get around it? It was a non-issue on Win2K, and I can't see any obvious programs running.
Grrr...
