Spotify is great on the go, but for desktop browsing I miss having my own files, so I'm re-downloading/re-ripping my music collection, this time in FLAC. I realize I could convert all these files to ALAC for easy iTunes support, but that forces me to use iTunes and it would be a lot of work reconverting them to FLAC should I move to Windows in the future.
I know iTunes has always sucked on Windows, but years ago, there was a time when the OS X version was very acceptable for me. That time has long passed and now iTunes is just a bloated mess with too many features that make the program a pain to run (App Store, movies, etc. are all completely unnecessary for a music player).
So I looked for a good music player for OS X that can handle hi res files while still being visually appealing. There isn't any! Vox seemed ideal but it is way too tiny to manage a big collection and all the other 'popular' ones look outdated. Why doesn't Mac have an equivalent of Foobar or Musicbee? It's a bummer.
