...Or is it all in our heads?

The "St. Ides" thread got me thinking ... do different types of alcohol produce different effects on your brain? I always read how people will react to a certain type of alcohol and they seem somewhat consistent. Wine and champagne makes people giddy and talkative, beer has a mild sedation effect, malt liquor can make you completely lose your rationale, etc. Obviously, at some point drunk is drunk. But I am talking about reasonable amounts of said liquors.

Even among some common liquors, 3 shots of tequila give me a different feeling than what 3 shots of vodka will give me. Vodka makes me very relaxed almost sleepy, whereas tequila has the exact opposite effect. Or is it all in my head?

In high school I used to drink Rev, which was vodka/guarana/caffeine and a lot of sugar. That was definitely a unique buzz. The name 'Rev' was appropriate.

Definitely. It depends on what went into making the particular alcohol. Cogeners (byproducts of fermentation) affect the flavor and the effect of the alcohol, which is partially why most common tequilas have a stronger effect than your average vodka. From what i've read, the wormwood in absinthe gives it hallucinogenic properties.

Edit: On the note of sleepiness, i used to down a couple of shots of vodka fresh from the freezer when i couldn't sleep. Works like a charm. ;)

Word of advice to the world at large.

It is not smart to start chugging absinthe when you've had a bottle of wine and a few beers already.

Baaaad results are inevitable.

Well, it's an ever worse idea to do it when you've a full stomach.

Much larger volume to be ejected.

:/

Quick question. Were you dealing with "real" absinthe, or that "kiddie" version? Both evil, just wondering.

Real to the best of my knowledge.

Other times I've had it, it has been the "kiddie" version, and there was a significant taste/effect difference.

I need to try Absinthe some day. I've never even had the kiddie version, let alone the powerful stuff. Anything rumored to have hallucinogenic affects is right up my alley.

I can definitely feel the difference when I drink a wide range of alcohols. It's even true of different kinds of beer. Miller Lite makes me sleepy while Madhatter IPA makes me more giddy. You get what you pay for, I suppose.

Yes there are diff buzzes. Theres the oh shit im gonna throw up buzz usually from cheap alcohol you know your drunk and theres nothin you can do about it, theres the cloud nine in which you were either smart and paced your self or drinking a higher quality alcohol. And then theres the run away train buzz , where you probably drank 40 diff kinds of alcohol , are dead, but just dont know it yet.
