Are UMDs roughly same size as GC discs?

I just had the weirdest thought. GBA2 essentialy a handheld GC, backwards compatible with all GC games, uses same media. Stick all your GC games in the GBA2! Few hundred games backcatalog right out of the box! Think about it.

Screen resolution is gonna be a problem, so forget about it :/

UMD discs are smaller than GC discs (weird huh? smaller but larger in capacity)

I think it's smaller by about 2cm/1".

They're a bit smaller physically I think, but because they come encased in a plastic slip, it's basically the same thing.

I too really think Nintendo is prepping a portable GameCube (Game Boy Next) for 2006.

Otherwise they'd be crazy to have Mario 128 and Legend of Zelda still in development for the thing.

Why would Nintendo do this when they could rerelease the GC games on a more sturdy/portable/less battery consuming cartridge in five years?

I guess you are right, they'd also lose quite a few potential ports :) It was just an idea.

I think UMD is 60mm, GC is miniCD size, so 80mm.

screen resolution is no problem. Either go for ideally 852x480 (widescreen 480p), or just go halves, and go 426x240, which is pretty much the same as PSP.

Then just downsample the games for the screens.

Oh, and have a TV out, so you can play them full res too. Yummy!

I would have previously thought a portable GCN was a stupid idea, and not possible in this day and age, but if Sony can do it with the lumbering PS2 (albeit redoing the chips), then the relatively simple GCN layout should be easy peasy.

One of the big pluses of having the Game Boy Next straight compatible with the GCN would be that it would have an entire back catalog of games, which means they don't have to invest a ton of R&D (which they may not have a lot of considering they also have to support Revolution and NDS) to get a monsterous library right away.

That doesn't sound very smart (or cheap either)

By 2006, a portable GCN level handheld could be $200 easily IMO, whether or not its disc based or card/high density cart based.

If they used cards/carts, but the chipset was relatively equal to the GameCube, then I guess they could just port the titles from the GameCube discs.
