Are you kidding me? XBox 360 Backwards Compatability explained?

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=8996

Current-gen Xbox games to be "recompiled" for Xbox 360

Following earlier indications that the Xbox 360 will only be backwards compatible with some Xbox games, Microsoft has admitted that existing software will need to be recompiled before it can be run on the new console.

The problem, it says, is down to hardware incompatibility - since the current Xbox uses an Intel processor, but the 360 will use IBM's PowerPC architecture, while NVIDIA's graphics solution is being replaced with an ATI one.

As many commentators have pointed out over the last few months, this means backwards compatibility problems. The solution Microsoft has reached is apparently to recompiled current-gen Xbox games so that they can be played on the 360. First on the list, it says, are the best-selling Halo titles.

The news has raised more questions than it answers, however, as it suggests that gamers may need to purchase titles they already own in order to play them on an Xbox 360 - and almost certainly means that only a sub-set of Xbox games will ever be playable on the new console.

Sony and Nintendo have already confirmed that their next-gen consoles - the PS3 and Revolution - will play all the games in their respective back catalogues, offering consumers a huge choice of titles at launch. Microsoft was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

No search function right now, but this is old...and probably completely bullshit in the way it's stated in the original article.

First thread.

It's gonna be like Bleem!, IMO....no reselling of new versions of old games, just special wrappers and recompiled executables to run the old games on new hardware.

I'm sure that's how they'll distribute them initially with official demo discs and other media getting the rest of the updates out possibly. Since every game has identifying characteristics, like file sizes and other info, I'm sure they'll go for a system that recognizes the disc and use a Live connection to select and download the appropriate data for use with the system to emulate correctly.

I also don't think they'll EVER charge for this feature...seeing as their competitors don't...it'd look especially bad on MS for even considering it. I don't personally think they should do it this way and would rather them just swallow a little money and license the proprietary tech for nVidia and Intel's stuff to ensure perfect emulation, or at least near perfect anyway. Hell, just swallow a little more money and just include a custom chip that houses the necessary hardware and feed it through to the new VPU for display and some upgrading.

I'm sure they are going to spend months trying to get XBox games running on X360 and not charge at least a nominal fee for this.

Are you fucking kidding me? No one works for free.

They'll do it for free because their competitors, both of them, are doing it for 'free'. It's worth it for them to bother, so it's obviously worth it for them to not charge as this is all just for servicing the fans of their older system. They won't charge. It'd be so monumentally stupid if they did and they know this.

People are only expected to work for free in video game land. It is not possible to actually make an addition to an existing game, and expect to be paid for it. I mean every add-on, update, downloaded content, or expansion pack "should have been there in the first place", and we will "be damned if we pay anything" to help them profit from their "milking". Sound familar? :D

In any other industry, people are grateful (usually) to get new content, or have value added to a product they already own... just not for video games :)

That being said, I dont think you will have to run out and buy $29 360 versions of the games you already own... but I COULD see them making downloadable updates to the games availaible only if you are an Xbox Live Gold subscriber. Availiable for FREE, of course... IF you pay a monthly fee :lol

THAT being said, I definitly would pay good money for 360 updates of classic Xbox games, if it were a a real overhaul. Halo 1 running on the Halo 2.5/3 engine, Ninja Gaiden Black running updated to 360 calibur graphics, etc.... but I dont think that is likley going to happen.

And with an attitude like that I'm guessing you don't really undestand too much about business, do you?

Edit: Has any reputable site confirmed this yet? I'm disinclined to believe it if it only comes from this one source.
