I also like it a lot but it's not perfect. Smash for example looks a lot more jagged and Bayo 3 is still blurry AF (although constant 60FPS everywhere). I am excited to finish my backlog on this thing.

I thought I was the only one noticing the jaggies in Smash... Nobody mentioned it and everyone else was like "OMG instant load times!!!" and ignoring the IQ degradation

I'm a weirdo because backwards compatibility is always my favorite feature of a console.

Backwards compatibility is super valuable in the first year or two but ideally should become less important over time.

I played a lot of PS4 when the PS5 came out, now not so much.

The load times are amazingly improved. I hope it gets a patch for IQ but I fear it's huge candidate for a Switch 2 edition that racks up the price. I would glady pay up if they get 4K and 120fps modes and bring back Smash Run.

The backward compatibility is legitimately impressive. Reminds me a lot of how well done the PS5 backward compatibility was (and the Xbox backward compatibility is the gold standard for this of course).

Some just don't benefit at all ... But a lot do.
It's mostly framerate improvements... but a lot of games that had variable resolutions now run at a solid framerate AND improved resolution. Basically it's as good as it can get without a patch

So yeah It's a Switch 2 AND a switch pro here and there

He has a point though. Every 7th gen and 8th gen console had account based purchases besides Nintendo. There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to at least transfer VC purchases besides Nintendo being behind like they always are and wanting you to spend money again and again just this time locked behind online play. Regular games I get it because there is no backwards compatibility however.

Even PS5 has this even if it's limited. I bought a few classic games on PS3 that I have access to on PS5.

No, PS1 games on PS2 were running like on the PS1 as the PS2 had PS1 components, same for the first models of the PS3 with PS2, and PS1 was emulation on PS3. But no improvement, like Virtual console.

PS1 software was still very timing dependant so Sony avoided the changes there* - not because of some hw reason (the heavy lifting of PS1 BC was done through emulation on PS2), but because it guaranteed compatibility. Performance 'did' change somewhat from 7xxxx series onwards though (which added a few more titles with compatibility issues to the list).
They also offered fast-load times and filtering - but both options would break in certain games, so it was off by default, and user enabled only.
Future PS1 emulators would continue this trend - PS1 on PSP, Vita and PS3 alike offered fast-loads, but still as a toggle-option. I haven't really tried it since the PS4 so can't say what's it like now.

*There are select PS1 titles (very few were unlocked like this) that run better (Quake 2 and Forsaken come to mind) - both had a 60hz target that original hardware missed relatively often, but it is comparatively stable on Sony hw from PS2 and onwards.

PS2 compat - after switching to emulation - offered 'usually' improved performance (PS3 wasn't always faster, but usually, and since PS4 framerates are bumped by 2-3x on unlocked games).
But also worth noting unlocked fps and adaptive-Vsync was still comparatively rare in that era, for first few years Sony did not allow it at all on the platform.

We're still in early days, and most indies don't even have dev kits yet. But I'm definitely expecting a deluge of patched games by the end of the year. It'd be such an easy win for studios to have a press release saying their ancient game now has a 60fps mode on Switch 2.

I'd imagine that sales for something like Astral Chain would pop off for a few weeks if they released a 60fps patch along with a discount.

I'd rather they take the path of least resistance. Dev time costs money. Uncapping a framerate (in most Unity/UE games) is essentially a checkbox. Optimizing for a higher resolution, HDR, or new assets is real dev time.

Definitely wasn't normal for me. NES-SNES-N64-GC had 0 backwards compatibility.

It's 4-6x more powerful in raw specs, but that doesn't include features like DLSS & RT support.

To be fair, the reason you can download some of your previously purchased PS1 classics on your PS5 is because of Sony's online subscription.

Same I actually gave up playing it but the orders of magnitude improved performance sucked me back in. I was having a similarly hard time finishing TOTK after Steamdeck came out but now I'm wrapping up the 5th Sage quest and exploring the depths in earnest.

Not sure I follow. You don't need PS+ in order to download previously purchased PS1 games.

They wouldn't be available to download without the service being there in the first place as they are easy filler to round out the catalogue.

It's almost 8 times more powerful in GPU raw performance alone, not counting architectural improvements or modern AI features, CPU, I/O, etc.

Thats cool since I never completed Odyssey fully, after beating the main track. Plan is to get the Switch 2 at some time when it reaches a critical mass of games to play, but I havent played any of the last two Zeldas either so maybe I will get one when DK launches. Should be enough for a while. Bananza, Mario Kart World, Odyssey, and the last 2 Zeldas.

thats my plan too. MY og switch is a exclusives machine, gathering dust since tears of the kingdom. Right now I just cant justify the purchase. Might bite when metroid and other games are released.

And? They could get WAY more out of marketing the game and selling it as a full upgrade than just "we uncapped it".

If you're going to do something, do it right and get heavily rewarded for it (with increased sales). Besides, It's not that much more dev time to just increase the resolution and fps.
