I turn it off. I can't sleep from the fan-sound and I don't feel like having a huge electric bill just so I can have my computer on all the time, while I don't even use it.

yea but computers do not use alot of electricity right?

If you turn off unnecessary lights to keep the electric bill down, then you should certainly turn off your computer when you won't be using it for a good while. Even at idle, a new P4 box could be eating up like 100 Watts.

I was an always on PC user, but now that I'm out on my own as of Sunday, and have to pay an electricity bill, I'm going to turn it off when I'm not using it.

I turn my computer off whenever I'm not home or when I'm asleep. I sometime BT, so that's when I leave my computer on for overnight.

Main desktop computer at the house stays on, other two desktops, all laptops, and our tablet PC are usually shut off after use.

Shutdown person. I can't work on a computer without restarting every 6 hours either. As soon as I feel the computer is working a bit slower due to page files/virtual memory or RAM getting fuller I need to restart (Before you ask or suggest getting more memory I have 1 GB, I'm just paranoid like that :p)

Shutdown unless BT is running. Been doin' it like that on the same computer for 5 years, so anybody that tells you the heat-up/Cool-down cycle is bad for the computer is full of it. Unless, of course, you buy cheap parts.

If I'm at home, and not really doing anything, it's always on. When I'm gone or asleep, I turn it off. Besides, it only takes about 30 seconds to boot anyways, so turning it off and on isn't really an issue.

I leave my computer on for three reasons:

1. I don't like waiting 20 seconds for it to boot
2. I don't pay utilities in my apartment
3. And most importantly, the front power switch is about 6 inches from the wall it's facing in my closet. So I have to bend over through my clothes to turn it on or put a CD in. Yeah, it's a pain, but my room's small enough that I thought it best to throw the computer in the walk-in closet

My mac (Powerbook) is either on or asleep 99% of the time. I sleep it when I'm away from it, because sleep actually works in OS X. In my experience with Windows, sleep functions were always shitty. This thing goes to sleep and wakes up from it instantly with no performance loss (the problem I always had with Windows sleep). The only time I ever shutdown the system totally is when I'm away from it for a long time (more than 36 or maybe 48 hours), or when I'm travelling.

I've had this Powerbook running for MONTHS at a time without any performance loss over time.

If it's just going to be sitting there idle, I turn it off. I just don't see how it makes sense not to. It's just wasting energy, and generating noise and heat while I try to sleep otherwise. Only box on 24/7 in my room is the Linux box known as my TiVo.

It's on as long as I'm awake. If I leave the house for a long time and no one is home, I turn it off (fear of fire). I used to leave it overnight, but stopped. I still do on ocassion. I also password lock my PC when I leave it.

I always turn it off at night, I too have the fear of fire in the basement with the PC on... we are all on the 2nd. floor so our exit would be windows if there was a fire.

If we leave the house on weekends for short trips, I will leave it on... but if we are away from the house all day, I turn it off.

So night and long time away from home... OFF!

That's just one of those whacky computer myths. The equipment in your computer will crap out much quicker simply from the temperature and conditions it faces while being on then from the very minimal stress the system experiences during an initial power-up. Besides, your average computer is only good for three or four years and if it's even remotely decent equipment, it's gonna last that long through some surprisingly harsh conditions.

You find that funny? I was paying 50-70 euros for a 56K connection a year ago, because there was no ADSL available here. Welcome to Greece the land of the primitive. The fucking ISPs are making fortunes here.

I usually shut down at night or when I go out. Sometimes I'll leave it on at night if I want to run a defrag or something, but the fan is loud and the case generates light, so I generally turn it off.

Well...I will tell you what I read from a study they did when I was working at HP. It didn't really make too much of a difference for PC life if it was left on 24/7 or turned off after each use. Now, of course these were, "off-the-shelf, non-overclocked" units. That lab was pretty interesting. Seeing the stress tests they did was pretty cool. I do think that start-up has to be hard on the HD. It sounds rough anyway.

Always on. I don't even think I turn my PC off when I go out of time. I like to be able to remotely connect to it at anytime.

A hard drive is probably one of the few components that would benefit from being on constantly. I don't know what the exact engineering reason behind this is, but alot of HD manufacturers claims it keeps the platters more balance, etc, as all modern HDs do forms of self-maintaince whenever they're idle. Those with Seagate HDs may notice that the HD kind of occasionally make a whirring noise when its idle, which is the drive performing wear leveling. Additionally, when HDs are first powered on, it takes quite a surge of power to get them spinning up (generally around 5 or 6 times the wattage a drive consumes while normally operating). Still, even an HD in a machine that's powered on and off frequently should last several years and likely far outlive its obsolete date.

I shut down more often these days, just because my last HD died, and most likely because of overheating from the PC always being on.

Then again, I did just shove it between 2 disc drives and another HD, it hardly fit. So snug you didn't even have to screw it in but I did just 'cuz :lol

I always turn it off at night, I can't stand the on light and the hum when I'm trying to sleep. In the daytime:

Winter (and late fall/early spring): on most of the day

Summer (and late spring/early fall): off whenever I'm not actively using it

I can't believe how much this little box heats up my room.

I'm the type of person who always leaves my computer on. I picked this one specifically because it's whisper-quiet, so I can stand to have it running all the time, even when it's 4 feet away from me while I sleep.
